Choosing the Date!

January 12th, 2010 @ 2:36 pm by Mrs. Scissors

In honor of the fact that we have less than five months left until the wedding, I’m going to tell you all how we decided on our wedding date. Hooray for story time!

I’m weird with numbers. Numbers and dates and, well, anything that I can obsess over. First of all, the only choice for month was June, which worked out well because I always wanted to be a June bride! May wouldn’t’ve worked since we’re both gradumacating in May, and July in Georgia is, well, how shall I put this… we’d all be sweatin’ like whores in church.

So June it was. My type-A self then wrote out all of the possible dates for June 2010…

  • 6.5.10
  • 6.12.10
  • 6.19.10
  • 6.26.10

No fun numbers there, really.

I didn’t really want to pick one just to pick one. But then, after agonizing, a light hit! There was a date with significance! My parents were married on June 20, 1970. June 19, 2010 would be one day before their 40th wedding anniversary! I checked with Mr. S to see if that was awesome or weird, and he thought it was great. Next, I checked with my parents. There were a few possible issues. My father’s birthday is on June 17th, and Father’s day is on June 20th. That’s a whole lotta stuff going on at once, though it would be an extra boost to Hallmark’s business for that week! I didn’t want to steal their thunder or add any more chaos.

Thankfully, they were excited and honored, and we immediately called to book the church. So, that’s how it happened! Hopefully we’ll find some ways to honor the marriages of both of our sets of parents, as well as my father’s birthday, and Father’s Day! Whew. That’s a lot of stuff to sneak in!

How did you choose your wedding date? Was it just a flip of the coin, a weird number combo, or a significant date?

That’s very cool! I wanted to try and get married on my parents’ anniversary (Sept. 29th), but it turned out that the prices went WAY up on our venue between early and late September, so we picked an earlier date.

We knew we wanted a July wedding. I have a weird thing about odd numbers. I just don’t like them. Even though my birthday is an odd number (23) and I was born in an odd year (87). I really wanted July 24th. It just sounded good. But the venue we wanted wasn’t available. So then I was stuck again… we’ve only been engaged since Oct 31st so I didn’t want anything earlier (so we’d have more time) but I was really stuck on this odd number thing. I decided I could deal with the 17th. SO we booked it and I’m slowly getting used to the number. I was DEAD set against getting married in 2011. I don’t even want to have kids that year :-) Weird…….. I know!

We moved our date up a week to accommodate our venue’s schedule, some other savvy bride nabbed the last weekend in April already (ie right before prices go up in May) so we went a week earlier. On the plus side, its right after Easter so we get free church decorations!

i always thought how we think that the wedding date held some special significance [besides the fact that you're getting married] but really sometimes it was a random decision.

that said, i think it’s great that you were able to schedule yours between some fabulous dates. my friend was able to marry on her parents’ anniversary!

Basically a flip of the coin…we wanted late September or early October. Due to Jewish holidays and Sept. 11th (and needing a Friday due to budget constraints), it was either 9/24 or 10/8. We picked 9/24 because the sun sets just a bit later on that date, hopefully meaning more light/warmth during our outdoor cocktail hour.

I wanted that date because it’s our 6 and 1/2 year dating anniversary, but we ended up with the 12th instead. We’ll be able to celebrate our ‘anniversary’ on our honeymoon, so I’m ok with it! :)

This is something that only pet owners would understand. We chose our wedding date on our dogs birthday that passed away. When she was 6 months old she passed away of meningitis. We fought hard to keep her alive but the disease took over. We thought we would honor her first birthday by getting married on it.

@Sunshine23 - I am the EXACT opposite, I hate even numbers! I was dead set against getting married in 2010, so we chose early 2011. It does bug me a little that I’ll be engaged in 2010, so you’re not the only one who’s weird about numbers. Apparently its an OCD thing :)

We picked 6/26 because we thought it’d be easy to remember. LOL :)

Aww, I love that you’re getting married a day before your parents’ anniversary! I guess we’re getting married about 2 weeks before my parents 35th anniversary actually. We picked our month because we wanted late spring, and our date because it’s Mr. GP’s favorite number! I’ll admit though, I really wanted an all even number :) 06.12.10 would have made me super happy!

We wanted to have our wedding on 10/30/10, the one year anniversary of our engagement. But ffil is running in the marine corps marathon the next day, and who wants to run a marathon the morning after their son’s wedding? So we pushed it back a week. But now I’m loving being a November bride!

We’re planning on October 30th…. We wanted an end of October/early November (still low rates in Mexico, but cold here in US of A!) …. As a bonus, we both are not fans of Halloween, and this will give us an excuse to not celebrate it every year….

As in: “Oh, what? A party with mummy costumes? Sorry! Doing a big anniversary extravaganza!”

omg I am the WORST with my wierd number obsession! I would have had to have gone with 6.12.10 if I were you because the numbers “make sense” in my head… 6 x 2= 12, 10+2 = 12 etc probably doesn’t make any sense to someone not living in my head! I don’t have an official date yet but I am set on 12.5.12 (I’m english so that’s 5.12.12 to you guys!) because of the symmetry and the fact that 5, 7 and 3 are my lucky numbers (5=may, 2+5 =7, 1+2=3 etc). we graduate in 2011 too so I knew it would have to be in 2012 anyway and I did want a spring wedding so there are other factors involved!

just re-read my post and I think I am officially crazy!

We picked October because I’ve always wanted to get married in October. My parents and grandparents were all married in October, so I always wanted to get married then too.

I also have a thing with numbers (runs in the family). I don’t like odd numbers. We got engaged in November, 2008 and we’ve waited THIS long to get married - all so it could be on our specific date. My parents’ anniversary is 10.01. I considered sharing the date with them. But, the fella didn’t love the idea. So, we chose 10.10.10. I love the date!!

We wanted a September wedding, and opted for the 17th (we also wanted a Friday) because it was when the venue of my dreams was available. And since we could only “hold” it until a year out, I figured that with the Jewish holidays, conventions would be less likely to hold something on that day. Totally random, right?

We opted for 9.25.10. I’m from New England, so a fall wedding in New England just can’t be beat… I was worried any later in the fall would be too chilly so I’d had my eye on September for some time!

I’m totally kooky about numbers, so I chose our date because it seemed to have a nice flow to it…

I’m so glad other brides are as nutty as I am! I got into a huge debate with my mother over a 2pm vs. 1:30pm ceremony because I refused to have a half hour written on our formal invitations. She suggested I seek counseling for being such a weirdo…but now I feel validated! Thanks, bees!

I think that’s so cool that you’re getting married so close to your parents anniversary! We picked our date because I kinda have this weird preference for even numbers. The 16th was the only even numbered day that our venue was available, so that’s what we went with!

My birthday is actually in June, which is why I didn’t want to get married in June originally. We were aiming for late May but because of some vendors being booked we pushed it back to June 12, because I needed an even number for whatever wacky reason.
