I mentioned in my post about Carnival that I had to call the courthouse to make sure they’d be open so we could pick up our marriage license, and whew, they will be! Mr. Nachos wasn’t too keen on the idea of a civil ceremony at home so he was very happy to hear that.
I didn’t really mind the thought of taking care of the legalities beforehand and going to the courthouse here, (plus a marriage license is cheaper in IL), but I am in fact very happy that we’ll be making it official at our Wyndham ceremony.
In order to have the marriage license ready for us when we get to the courthouse, there are a few steps that need to be done. The instructions for obtaining our marriage license in St. Thomas don’t seem too difficult, but there’s a lot to do. We have to send the following to their courthouse…
These all have to be at the St. Thomas courthouse at least 8 days before we arrive, although some websites I’ve seen recommend sending it all up to 2 months before, which would be next month. GAAAAAHHH, time is starting to speed up on me! Then we have to call to confirm that they received everything and ask for our license confirmation number.
Once we arrive, we have to go to the courthouse in person with photo IDs and sign for the license. We wanted to go straight from the airport, but I doubt our shuttle would be willing to stop and wait, we’ll have all our luggage, AND we arrive at 3 and the courthouse closes at 5. It’s a shame though because…

…oh well. I guess we’re taking a taxi the next day.
Then a few days later, we get married!!!
After the ceremony, our officiant will sign our license and send it to the courthouse to have it notarized. It now becomes a court certified copy of the marriage license. The court will mail it to our home in Chicago and we should have it within 2-3 weeks. The day of our wedding, we will get a signed copy of our license, but apparently our marriage isn’t legal until the courthouse certifies the license. I also double checked IL marriage laws to make sure we’d be legal in IL, and since it’s US territory, we’re in the clear.
Got all that? Again, it’s not too difficult, but just a lot to prepare.
Were you surprised at the steps you had to take to get your license? DW brides, did you have to jump through any hoops to make sure you were ‘legal’?
*side note* one interesting little tidbit I learned when I was looking up IL marriage laws is that first cousins can marry if over the age of 50. Discuss amongst yourselves.
