About Mrs. Pudding

Losing It

January 12th, 2010 @ 11:50 am by Mrs. Pudding

For all of those July brides (and grooms) out there, we have officially hit the 6 month mark!

For me, this means that it’s finally time to start a health and fitness routine that will turn me into one hot bride. But before I tell you about my plans to achieve my most hottest self, I think that we should flashback to 2008, just before Mr. Pudding and I got engaged, and became legally married.

Even though we didn’t consider our civil ceremony to be “the real deal”, I still wanted to be a smoking hot “non-bride”. The problem was that after my first year of working, I still had not lost the weight that I gained in college.

Now, when you are a tall girl like me (5’9), you realize that there are pros and cons to your height. First of all, you must come to terms with the fact that no matter how much you diet or work out, you will always be “bigger” than your girlfriends. Miss Samantha Jones demonstrates this quite accurately:

Both ladies are beautiful, no doubt, but Kim is very clearly “bigger”. Just look at their legs! Sometimes, my “bigger” form gets to me a little bit. In a world that is obsessed with numbers - pounds, dress sizes - it’s hard to keep the fact that as a “bigger” girl, my numbers have to be “bigger” as well. This does not mean that I am any less beautiful or attractive!

For the most part though, I am happy with my body type. The true plus of being a tall girl is the fact that you can easily gain 5, 10, 15 pounds, and nobody will notice! The extra weight distributes itself proportionally, and no one is the wiser. From day to day, your body looks like it hasn’t changed much.

That is, until you start looking at pictures.

I entered college looking like this:

My college besties and me… see what I mean about being “bigger”? I think that I look fantastic in this pic, but let’s compare my hips to those of the bestie on my left, shall we?

And by 2008, one year after finishing school, I looked like this:

Losing It : wedding fitness Fat fat

The changes in my body crept up slowly, fueled by a lack of exercise and a diet of french fries and Ben and Jerry’s. I didn’t notice my body changing, until one day, a couple of months before our engagement, I looked in the mirror and saw someone I didn’t recognize.

The weight was stored mostly in my upper body. My face became chubbier, my breasts ballooned, and my love handles got bigger. My legs, butt, and thighs remained pretty much the same, though. My pant size didn’t increase much, which is probably why I didn’t notice how much weight I actually gained. Although no one would call me “overweight”, I was about 10 pounds over what would be considered healthy, and 20 pounds over my ideal weight.

The photo above was taken in June of 2008. By September of that year, I would look like this:

Losing It : wedding fitness W101 w101

I was able to loose the weight that I had accumulated over 5 years in less than 3 months - actually, it took about a month and a half.

How did I do it? Well, around the same time that I was realizing it was time to make a change, my FMIL was on the MediFast program.

She was losing weight very rapidly, and I thought that I should give it a try. I have to admit, I did not do a lot of research on this diet before I started it. My FMIL works in the medical profession, and I trusted her judgment.

Now, let’s just get something very clear: this diet is not easy. The food is… well… flavorless at best, and sticking to the diet takes an extreme amount of discipline. But if you follow the program, the weight melts off quite quickly, or at least it did for me.

Did anyone else try the MediFast system? Are there any other successful diet stories out there?

I loved the photo journey! I have a similar story but using weight watchers. I gained weight senior year and during the first year of teaching, then lost it all….then gained some back and now have ten or so pounds to go before the wedding. 4 months to go- if it doesn’t start working, I’ll have to check medi fast out! thanks pudding!

I don’t know about medifast but I never wanted to do any kind of diet I couldn’t maintain, since I’m a firm believer that I would gain all the weight back very soon after quitting any kind of drastic diet.

I did Weight Watchers and lost 50 pounds in my first year of law school. That was 4 years ago and I’ve maintained that loss (+/- 5 pounds). Now I’m trying to lose another 10 for the wedding, which is actually harder than the first 50 (or it seems that way), but I’m still only doing Weight Watchers (healthy eating + exercise).

My mom did medi-fast before and she got great results. I think she is doing it again for my wedding day this November. I just don’t think I have the level of discipline :(
and I dont think the boy will let me add it to our current budget

Love this! I am 5′9” and always feel bigger around other ladies no matter what I have weighed -and I maintain a healthy weight!

My sister (and FMOH) is super teeny in comparison to me. I know I shouldn’t compare us, and my wedding will be my day, but I can’t help it- she is a stick and can eat whatever she wants! Whats even worse is we look nearly identical- so I definitely need to work on my physique leading up to the big day (and send my sister plenty of kitkats and snickers bars in the mail— hahaha).

Regardless, I have been a huge fan of weightwatchers for many years and of plain old exercise. I trained for a half marathon this year and found that to be a great way to keep the weight off, and work towards a goal. Plus, there were tons of teeny girls that I passed en route- which always feels great. No offense to you skinny mini’s out there, but it’s not always easy :)

You’re so right about being able to gain 5 or 10 pounds without it making that much of a difference! When I gain 5 pounds, you can totally tell, which is a real downer. Tall is beautiful!

My problem is that I cant AFFORD these kind of programs! They are extremely pricey! My FI says that I dont need to lose weight therefore he wont let me spend the money on the diet system…poo!

Agh, I fall into the same boat as you. I am currently trying to lose the weight by watching what I eat and exercising regularly. Yeah, it’s not the fast way, but I am hoping to get there!

I’ve gained ummmmm 20 pounds in the last 5 months! And it’s so, so depressing I’m 5′ 9″ too! But 20 pounds pushes the “Oh, you can’t tell you’ve gained” envelope and I’m DEFINITELY feeling my pants being too tight!

Me, too! 5′9″ in stocking feet, at least 6 foot in heels and able to see over the heads of most anyone around me, male or female. I kind of like that facet of being one of the big ‘uns. :)

No stick figure here. I am healthy curvy and walk at least 6 miles a day at a fast pace.

How about trying to lose the last 5 pounds? I’ve gained about 5-8 lbs since being with the FI (over 3 years) and while I can generally lose the first few pounds easily the last 5 will.not.come.off.
Sigh. My new strategy is to cut out most alcohol (only 2-3 drinks on the weekend) and add in more weight-lifting.

I have the opposite problem - I’m short and can never reach anything which is annoying. Also - having large bones and big muscles (both good things, the latter of which I’ve worked really hard for) means that in good shape I’m always going to be in the high end of the “healthy weight” range if not slightly above it.

No weight loss diets for me, though. I’m glad it worked so well and quickly for you, but eep! I have massive willpower in general, but eating anything resembling diet-level calories makes me liable to pass out while driving and too weak to go to the gym. I may have accidentally done so yesterday and sworn many times over that I would not intentionally do that to myself. Though eating french fries and ice cream also makes me feel really sick, so apparently my digestive system refuses to let me vary much in either direction.

I totally get the being 5′9′ and towering over everyone thing. All 3 of my bridesmaids and our groomswoman are all about 5′4″. That’s actually the tallest. I could probably carry them all down the aisle. I’m going to look gargantuan next to them. But, I’m marrying a guy who’s 6′4″ and my brother, a bridesman, is 6′8″ so I plan on rockin’ my high heels that day.

1. you look great.
2. i find it very funny that you are writing a post abt medifast. yesterday, there was an article that came out calling them a fraud. their stock dropped by abt 15% yesterday - that’s a crazy big amount. (i think the fraud had to do more w/ their profits - the fact that it’s sort of a pyramid scheme. i think.)

Miss Pudding, you look fantastic!! I know what you mean about tall girls always being “bigger”! I’m 5′9″ and ever since I can remember, I’ve always felt bigger and compared myself to my “smaller” friends, unfairly. 2 friends in particular - sisters, no less - didn’t help my body image. they came from a tiny family, neither were over 5′3″! My mother saw me hanging out with them one night and actually said “you look like an Amazon compared to them!” It hurt! But it was just because we’re built differently!
I also gained a LOT of weight in college and am proud to say that I’ve lost 100lbs since 2004! And you’re right - it’s a gradual thing that I didn’t even realize got out of control so badly!
But at least now I can say that I’m in the best shape of my life: the lowest weight and most fit I’ve ever been, even in HS I was 3 sizes bigger and never exercised!

I absolutely love reading your blogs!! :) my husband and I are also “legally married” but our wedding is this june! And I absolutely understand the wanting to be a “hot bride” for the wedding!

I actually chose a different route and last January (it’s been a full year now!) I changed my lifestyle to a low-carb, whole foods, no sugar, no white flour one. I LOVE the way I eat and it’s so flavorful and versatile (and yes, I still get desserts too! just no sugar… :D)
But I lost 30 pounds and have kept it off now for 6 months. I’ve learned how to eat to maintain my weight and am so happy! I do still have 5 pounds I’d like to lose, but my body seems happy at this weight and won’t budge…but hey I’m so much happier here than I was 30 pounds ago! lol.

Also - the being taller/bigger than everyone - omg that’s me! I’m 5′8 and 165. I have a pic of me and some friends from a wedding a few years ago - they were all like 5′2 or shorter…you can only imagine what that pic looks like! lol. Luckily my MOH is only 1 inch shorter than me and my 2nd bridesmaid is about 5′5 so not too bad. :) course DH is exactly the same height as me so no heels! :(

but anywhoo - congrats on getting rid of the weight you have! I’ve seen pics of you in your other posts and you already ARE hot! You’ll just be hottER ON your wedding day! :D
