Mrs. Sewing's Picture
Mrs. Sewing, San Mateo, CA/Honolulu, HI Age and Occupation: 24, Electrical Engineer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Electrical Engineer Engagement Date: June 27, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Anela Garden Chapel & Japanese Cultural Center, Honolulu About Me: I'm an easily entertained, compulsive idea-scheming machine who loves good art, good food, and a good engineering challenge. I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!
About Mrs. Sewing

A Viable Vision

January 13th, 2010 @ 10:15 am by Mrs. Sewing

Whenever I get confused and my brain feels like a pinball machine on hyper-drive, I turn to old faithful to bring me back in line: the list. There’s lists for groceries, chores, things to do at work, restaurants to try, Christmas presents to buy, even topics to blog about.

“Before you go buying things and spending frivolously, did you come up with a theme yet?” Asks Mr. Sewing, as I peruse a clearance section at Michaels with interest.

“Hmm. I dunno. Get me a pen and a paper, we’ll brainstorm a list of ideas!” I answer, now clutching a completely useless (but adorably cute) pack of pewter charms.

Mr. Sewing groans audibly. “You don’t even know what you’re going to do with those, put them down.” Ever the practical man, he doesn’t believe in buying things without having a firm scope in place for the items use. “Half off of a ten dollar item is five dollars wasted” is his mantra.

Since I couldn’t rack my brain fast enough to come up with a feasible idea, I put the charms away. We went home and I busted out a list of criteria for our wedding. With this in mind, maybe I wouldn’t be like the hungry person that decides to go grocery shopping and ends up buying way more than expected.

Our wedding had to be: accommodating to all ages, inclusive to about 150 people, non-touristy, not overly feminine, and not boring. But above all it had to be relevant to our lives - things we love and enjoy. What kind of situation would satisfy all of the above?

Mr. Sewing and I celebrate each dating anniversary by going back to the anime convention where we met. One of our favorite events at the con is something called “Anime Hell”. There’s really no good way to describe it, other than to say it’s a night’s worth of random video clips that only happen to have the words “funny” and “anime” in common.

Our wedding, I think, will be something of a play on that idea: random, but still loosely themed together with the topics “fun” and little parts of “us”. (Not body parts, of course.)

In a blurb (aka my pitiful replacement for an inspiration board - use your imagination!):

An explosion of artistic pop culture infused with stylized shout-outs to our Asian roots, a touch of the tropics and plenty of things to keep the mind occupied. A nighttime affair with delicious island food and fragrant, brightly colored flowers. An evening’s worth of variety and entertainment taking the place of the traditional drinking and dancing. Video clips, bingo, algorithm marches and more. We’ll mix up old and new wedding traditions to the point that it becomes a logistics nightmare with something for everyone. (Or at least something for everyone to talk about later on!)

Fortunately, our chosen theme is still vague enough for me to continue to browse random sales racks. I’m glad we agreed on something; it’s encouraging to have that first building block - the foundation of things to come - in the back of my head as I look at venues and decorations with a better sense of purpose and vision.

What about you? Was theme the first thing you decided on in your planning? Or did your theme evolve from the vendors and purchases you acquired?

Honestly? I picked my colors first. and this is how I picked them.
I figured “hey, if I am going to have pictures taken with my dear friends wearing a color all around me, it might as well be a color I look good in”

Yep! That’s how we went with Cobalt blue. Then I chose yellow as a compliment, bright for summer, FI likes sunflowers and we’re mixing in green.

THEN I saw bouquets with succulents and nice eclectic, personal touches. And there, our theme was born.

I have no idea where our theme came from, honestly. I’ve always had an irrational love for all things Rococo/Victorian/Marie Antoinette-esque, so that was non negotiable, but I have no clue where or how it evolved into a Marie Antoinette meets Alice in Wonderland mash-up, but I’m pretty excited about it!

@katie: I like that approach. Definitely makes things simpler when you narrow down the rainbow!

and speaking of rainbows..
@Miss Rainbow: I love your theme, I really, really do! It’s so whimsical and fun :D

Very creative! :) For the longest time I avoided the “theme” … and just yesterday it finally came to me. Yes…5 months out. I’m crazy, I know.

I love your description- not using images really forces you to use rich descriptive language and I think you nailed it.

Us? I love color and set the color scheme early- we agreed on the words Urban, summary, and BEER- Done!

Ha, I’m guilty of the “But I neeeeeeeed it!” “For WHAT?” “Uh, something” conversation with Mr. KM. This is why he never goes to Michael’s with me.

Our “theme” was pretty easy–we like nature, we have deep family traditions, we mashed them together. ;)

I am so glad to read your post. While we would like a little dancing (FI wants a first dance), we want the majority of the night to be broken up with entrainment. I can’t wait to see what you come up. Please do make a post about it. :)

@Miss French Fries: I just love a good epiphany! :D
@Miss Pretzel: I really, really love your theme as well! Very hip and cool!
@Miss Pencils: lol, I can’t either..it’ll be quite interesting, if only for the completely awkwardness of it all..
@KMSull: Haha! I WISH I could get into Michael’s on my own. Mr. Sewing likes to accompnay me to control the spending >.>”
@Miss Spaniel: You definitely can’t go wrong with a nature theme, I think they make for some of the prettiest weddings!
@beexiong: Right back at ya, Bee! ;)
@adias.angel: Yay! I think that’s a grand idea, since that’s what we’ll be doing! Glad to know I’m not the only one that likes the variety shows :)

I love your “blurb”! Our theme definitely evolved over time, and it kind of only came together at the last minute.

I honestly don’t know that I can say we have a theme at this point, unless you count ‘beachy’. In that case, the theme came from the venue I guess!

I love the sound of your theme! It sounds fun and awesome and is still flexible enough for you to sneak in a pretty charm or two if you want! ;)
