Mrs. Cola, Mountain View, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Product Communications and Promotions Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Managing Partner and Senior Designer Engagement Date: March 5, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Mountain Terrace, Woodside, CA About Me: I’m a Washington State native, enjoying life in Silicon Valley California with my fiancé, our three kitties and one leopard gecko. I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.
About Mrs. Cola

This past weekend my mom and I attended the San Francisco Wedding Fair at the Four Seasons in downtown San Francisco, which was recommended to me as the best fair in the Bay Area. It was a very lovely event, with tons of yummy food and drinks, as well as some serious eye candy, but altogether, not really that useful to me, which is why I’d highly recommend that if you plan on checking out a bridal fair, go early in the planning process!

For me, being five months out, I’ve already decided on every vendor except for our transportation. My invitations are designed (I’m starting laser cutting them this weekend!), registry is done, and I’m pretty much just getting down to the nitty-gritty of executing all of my planning for the past nine months.

But I can see how attending a bridal fair would be very useful for newly engaged ladies, as there is a wealth of information to be gathered from one: vendor pamphlets, an easy way to ask direct questions, and the opportunity to see work samples in person, without having to make separate appointments. And so, for those of you who haven’t attended a bridal fair yet, here’s a peek at my visit. It wasn’t quite as crazy as Miss Rainbow’s experience, though!

There were definitely lots of crowds and lines for food and drinks:

Beautiful cake displays (some of which you could sample… although I was a good little dieter, and only had one bite of cake, and one mini cupcake from Sibby’s Cupcakery… since we’re getting our cupcakes from Sibby’s, I could justify it!):

We spent a while in the Hello Lucky booth, where they had a photobooth you could use, too:

Bridal Fairs: Go Early In Your Planning Process : wedding bridal show Img 52907 Bridal Fairs: Go Early In Your Planning Process : wedding bridal show Img 52705 Florists were there, showing off some pretty bouquets. I finally got to hold some bouquets, to see which size I liked best, but man, I didn’t realize how heavy they were! This one below is 13 inches across (yes, my mom whipped her mini tape measure out of her purse!), and so thick that it was hard to hold with just one hand:

Bridal Fairs: Go Early In Your Planning Process : wedding bridal show Img 52604 And then there were some more, uh, exotic vendors. This one in particular, although I was too astounded to actually figure out which company was promoting a peacock or wing-like belt that held champagne glasses!

Bridal Fairs: Go Early In Your Planning Process : wedding bridal show Img 52706 Bridal Fairs: Go Early In Your Planning Process : wedding bridal show Img 52707 (the model looked like her back hurt, and there wasn’t even any liquid in the champagne glasses)

And finally there was the drinks and food! Champagne, champagne martinis, champagne cocktails, champagne in my hair—er, what? Yeah, that’s right, I got splashed by a waiter trying to squeeze through the aisles with a tray full of drinks. It wasn’t as bad as the girl on the other side of the aisle though, as she got champagne all down her back. The horrified look on the waiter’s face was classic though! Anyway, on with the food:

I can see it being so much more useful for ladies further away from their wedding date though, so I would recommend attending one, if only for the experience! But make sure to do your research as to which is the best one in your area, since they can be expensive (this one was $25 each at the door), and I’ve heard that some don’t even have cake to taste (which we all know is one of the reasons we want to go! ;) ).

Have you attended a bridal fair in your area? What was your experience, and did you find it useful to your planning process?

I agree; they are very useful early in the process. When I went to the big LA one in 2008, I had already either confirmed or narrowed down most of my vendors (yeah, in 2008) so I didn’t get much out of it (except a discount offer for a florist who ended up being WAY too expensive anyway).

Wow… this one looks AMAZING. My manager and I went to one this last weekend and it wasn’t nearly as awesome. Of course, we’re also in KY so… I took it with a grain of salt. There was a gun show going on at the same time. Just saying.

I’ve had some very great experiences at Bridal Shows! I’ve even booked some vendors from a few, so I absolutely think they are worthwhile. I agree, too, that its better to go early in the planning process - even with 8 months out the one I went to this weekend didn’t have a LOT to offer since most of my major vendors are booked.

I’m going to one this weekend in Madison, WI. It’s a little more reasonable ($7 in advance) and there’s lots of food/cake to taste (mom and I went last year, even though I wasn’t engaged yet). We’re using it for ideas - most of our vendors are done (except the DJ), so I’ll probably focus on floral and centerpiece ideas.

I also went to a bridal fair this weekend, and since I am getting married in June it didn’t have quite the same impact as if I would have went earlier.

It was also pretty small, which I was disappointed in…so I didn’t feel like I got the real bridal fair experience. We did end up booking our DJ out of it, so it wasn’t a total loss! I wish I would have went to yours, it looks so much better!

I pretty much went to one for the free food and cake early on! Plus a friend of mine had told me there was no way you could leave a bridal fair withOUT winning something, so I was intrigued. Of course I ended up not winning anything and just being spammed for life. Grr. But the cake and food was great! :)

The one we went to wasn’t nearly as good as this — I mean, it didn’t even include a woman modeling a peacock plume champagne glass holder. ;)

I went to one on Sunday… I also did not find it helpful, because I am far into the planning too. :/. And I noticed a lot of vendors were expensive. It was okay - at least I can say I went and my mom enjoyed it.

I’ve only been to one, which wasn’t that helpful since I’m a DW, but still fun! I too love the tablescapes the best! And that wing-dress is crazy! I actually like it, minus the champagne glasses. lol.

Ohh! I think I would have liked this one, if only for the nom nom food and the tablescape/cake eye candy! The one I went to was horrendous!

I never made it to any bridal shows, but I would have totally been right there with ya eyeballing the table setups. So pretty!

Oh I wish I had known about this. I totally would have gone…although I probably wouldn’t have found it too useful, since most of my planning is done and my wedding isn’t even in Cali. Oh well.

I’m going to a bridal show tonight. I’m pretty far in the planning process so I don’t expect it’ll be very helpful, but I love to look at all the wedding eye candy, and who know? I could win something! Besides, since it’s free, the champagne and yummy food make a good date night. About the only dates we can afford right now. Boo.

You got some great pictures! I am the cake designer of the cakes you featured in your pictures! I also had a booth at the fair, The Buttercream Studio. I had a great time working with the Four Seasons and Floramor designing some inspirational cakes for the fair! I hope you enjoyed them! ~ Tracy

I’ve never been to a bridal fair before, and now I wish I had! It’s too late in the planning process for me to go. :(

I super drool over that Hello Lucky! stuff. Mmmm.
