Find Your Seat!

January 13th, 2010 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Cheeseburger

Very, very early in wedding planning, I was searching for Penn State inspiration around The Knot, and I came across a Real Wedding feature that grabbed my attention. The couple had met at Penn State, and were married in a beautiful winter ceremony in Philadelphia.

One way that they paid tribute to their PSU romance was by naming their reception tables after people and places at Penn State!

Here is a picture of one of her final products:

I knew we had to do this! It was such a cute and understated touch. I searched all over and was able to collect pictures of people and places that Burger and I felt represented our Penn State experience. It wasn’t hard for us to narrow our list, since we needed about 30 for all of our tables!

Here is the final list we came up with for all of the PSU girls out there:

On-Campus Places:

  • Old Main
  • Beaver Stadium
  • Bryce Jordan Center
  • The Lion Shrine
  • Patee Library
  • Paterno Library
  • The Creamery
  • Nittany Lion Inn
  • Hintz Alumni Center
  • Rec Hall
  • The Obelisk
  • Forum Building
  • Hallowell Building
  • The HUB
  • East Halls
  • Pollock Halls
  • Palmer Art Museum

Off-Campus Places:

  • Mount Nittany
  • Mc Lanahan’s
  • Allen Street Grill
  • The Corner Room
  • The Diner
  • The Café
  • Mad Mex
  • The Phyrst
  • Zeno’s

People:

  • Joe Paterno
  • The Nittany Lion
  • The Blue Band
  • The Drum Major

Special Things:

And a few examples of the pictures we went with:

I actually attempted this DIY project 3 times before I was successful. It’s not even difficult! I just made some rookie mistakes.

My first mistake was printing all of the pictures out on photo paper using my deskjet. After looking through them, I really wasn’t satisfied with the print quality so I decided to order prints. I had the pictures printed, and I was really liking the way that they looked, so I proceeded to cut all the cardstock and begin gluing everything. Yes, I used glue. Wrong. Everything started curling up and looking ugly. Fail. I threw those out and put this project on the back burner. For about 9 months.

Fast forward to last weekend. I decided it was time to get. these. done. For reals.

I had re-printed the pictures over the holidays, so I broke out the cardstock and started cutting away. I was sure I had some glue dots or other appropriate adhesive somewhere in my craft box, but it wasn’t until I was done cutting up 60 pieces of cardstock that I realized I did not.

Crap. I didn’t feel like running to the store, so after a few moments of frustration, I thought like Cola and broke out my X-Acto knife! A few quick nicks in the corners, and everything was firmly in place.

Behold, the DIY project that would never end:

Over the last 18 months or so Cheeseburger Mom and I have been collecting these cute little black easels from Walmart ($2.99 each, I think):

And here’s what a table location sign looks like displayed:

Once we get our final head count, I’ll be putting together a diagram of the ballroom so that people know where to find the Joe Paterno table, for example. :)

Are you doing traditional table numbers or switching it up a bit? Did any of your DIY projects take a little longer than expected?

I love these - and they look so classic in b&w! I was thinking along the same lines of naming tables after places we’ve been/places that have special meaning to us and including photos. I love the way your’s came out and may have to steal some inspiration! ;-)

Nice job! :) And finding 30 different people/places/things is no small feat, either.

They look great!

Two questions for you: How big are the actual pictures? And, how big is the total card?

@HugsKissesLadyBugsBride: aww I’m glad! I got a little smile just thinking about some of the places too :)

@fancygirl: oooh yay! That’s great!

@Jesso: HAHA my mom LOVES table wars, she was disappointed that we couldn’t do them because of the wedding and originally wanted to try it! Only people who love phyrst family can sit at phyrst… know anyone? ;)

@Jacqi: thanks! we’ll be sitting at, you guessed it, Old Main :) I’m obsessed, and plus it’s in the middle of campus and our table will be in the middle of the reception :)

@Abbey: good questions, sorry I didn’t mention that! The pics are 4×6… now the rest I just eyeballed… umm I took at least a half inch off each side of the ivory cardstock so they are like 7.5 x varying heights based on how much room the name took up. Then the black cardstock is only trimmed for height, so they are all 8.5 x varying heights! Does that make sense?

@LittleWit: ooohhh sounds like fun!

These are awesome! We’re doing streets around northeast Philadelphia…where our families are from and where we met! :) This is so awesome! Great finds on the pictures. I think we’re just going to do the names and no pictures…but now you have me wanting to do pictures! :)

Oooh! Thank you for showing me these. This gives me that perfect idea of how to do ours! We’re naming ours after structures like the one we’re getting married on.

These look awesome. I want to do our tables after our favorite athletes since we are big sports fans, so I’ve been looking for a way of doing the pictures where it will still look classy and fit into the other wedding elements. Thanks for the inspiration!

Love this!! This is what I plan doing, too. We met in Philly (UPenn), but have been living in NYC for 4 years, so I thought that would be more appropriate. So I plan on having B&W photos of NYC landmarks, in plain white frames. Ideally, I’d want to take the photos myself.
So does this mean you’re having 30 tables? I think I’ll only need 12 max.
Also, what are you putting on your escort cards? Just the table name, or a picture, too?
