DIY Rewind: Pearl Jewelry

January 14th, 2010 @ 8:46 am by Mrs. Cheeseburger

When I posted about the gifts I am planning to give to my girls, a few people requested a tutorial, and I was happy to oblige!

These are super easy, and don’t take very long at all. Let’s get started!

Here are the supplies you’ll need:

DIY Rewind: Pearl Jewelry : wedding diy jewelry tutorial Img 849

Pearls (or other beads), crimp beads, jump rings, headpins, wire or string of your choice, earring findings, crimper, long nosed pliers, and wire cutters.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what half those things were called - I just looked them up online. In reality, I rolled into Michaels and grabbed a bunch of stuff. What you see above is what worked for me. :)

Close up on the earring findings, headpins, crimp beads, jump rings, as well as the crimper thingy:

Hokay, so, first string a crimp bead onto your string, followed by a clasp.

Then loop the string around your clasp and back through your crimp bead:

Pull tight, and crimp away! I think there is probably a science to how you’re supposed to do this, but I really just mashed on the bead with the crimper until it was really secure and not going anywhere.

String your beads:

Now finish off your necklace/bracelet. First string another crimp bead followed by a jump ring.

DIY Rewind: Pearl Jewelry : wedding diy jewelry tutorial Img 85003 Loop back around your jump ring and feed your string back through your crimp bead (just like when you started your strand):

So, the crimp beads post-crimping are a little ugly. Apparently, they make covers for this very reason! Honestly, they really aren’t very noticeable, so I didn’t worry about them:

Now for the earrings. You’ll need two headpins. When I first saw earrings like this on some blog somewhere, I thought they were using real stick pins, like you use for sewing. Nope. These are super bendy and awesome, not tough like sewing pins (I tried them first, FAIL).

String your bead(s) onto the headpins, like so:

The hardest step: grab the pin with your long-nosed pliers about 3mm away from where the bead ends and fold the end of the pin down toward the bead. It should look like this when you’re done:

Next, grab the little loop you’ve just made with your pliers:

And take the edge of the pin and wrap it around your loop a few times, so that you end up with something like this:

Snip off that excess pin as close to the loop as possible.

Then, take your earring fastening and open up the bottom loop a tiny bit with your pliers:

Then slip your bead onto the earring fastening, and then close it up with your pliers:

Voila! Final product:

And here’s your completed set (this is a bracelet - obviously - because I’m lazy :))

I hope that tutorial was helpful for those of your that plan on DIYing some jewelry! Keep in mind that you don’t have to be a pro to get some pretty nice-looking results! :)

These look really awesome! And good idea on using the black background… it looks like some kind of abstract photography AND we can see what’s going on!

Thanks for the tutorial - that was so helpful and perfect timing! I was just thinking of making necklaces for my girls to save money, but figured there were a few more steps than just putting it on string! This looks easy! I might have to go buy some some supplies today!

Great job… small hint on the crimper tool (I make jewelry)… you crimp it once to close it like you have done. Then you turn it sideways once again and recrimp it to close it up completely so it ends up looking like a tube rather than a double tube (only way I could think of to explain it)… when you first crimp you end up with a sort of two loop looking thingy, then you close that all up like a letter V. Do you understand what I am saying? Just thought I would throw you the hint on the crimper… other than that… they are PERFECTO! Great way to save some money too! RIght?

Nice work! I second what calligraphybytammy said, crimp once, then crimp again so it folds over on itself. They look awesome and I’m sure your girls will all love them!

@calligraphybytammy: THANK YOU! Seriously I had no clue. I believe the crimp thing came with some instructions, but I’m so ADD I just rip off the packaging and throw it away :) Yes ladies, listen to Tammy and crimp your bead to a V! That also makes sense how the bead covers would work then! :)

@sarah: sarah you’re killllllling me ;) jk I know, I know I need to do it. Maybe next week, k? :)

Thanks ladies for all your kind words - they really are easy, and they make killer pearl jewelry for cheeeeeap :)

Making my own jewelry terrifies me, so I’m doubly impressed Cheeseburger! Thanks for the tutorial, it makes the process a little less scary :) Especially since I’d get to go buy a bunch of awesome tools!

Very pretty! How much would you estimate (ballpark) the cost to be for the bracelet and earring set (with all the materials included)?

@jennybirdy: so the thing is, you’ve got to buy the tools as well as the fastenings (which come in bulk). I would say each tool was about 8 dollars. Then each packet of “things” (jump loops, earring fastenings, clasps, crimp beads) is like 2-3 bucks each. Then each box of pearls is 4 dollars. So it really only makes sense if you’re going to make a lot. I would say that for 12 earring/necklace (I made all necklaces except this one) I spent about $50 for all the supplies, which puts them at just over $4 each. Plus, you’ll have the tools forever, so the projects just get cheaper from there on out! Hope this helps!
