About Mrs. Pencils

Oh, Twobirds, How I Love Thee…

January 14th, 2010 @ 2:14 pm by Mrs. Pencils

Every single one of my bridesmaids has to travel to our wedding and incur the hefty costs associated with the trip. Because of this, I was determined to purchase their bridesmaid’s dresses for them! Of course, with six girls, this meant I’d have to keep costs down.

A few months back, I was dress shopping with PF (one of my b-maids!) for her wedding, and I tried on the Twobirds dress. This dress is beautiful. Classy, flattering, gorgeous. Also, over my price limit. I loved how every girl could wear it in the style that suited their personality best.

I tried to let this dress go and began my search by emailing bridesmaids CH and AT for their advice (though my brother is my MOH, he doesn’t really enjoy dresses… or online shopping… or shopping at all for that matter). I kept my searching within a few parameters: around $150 or less, available online or at a national chain bridal store, and yellow or brown dresses only.

After a few hours of online research I found some promising ensembles in the colors and price range I wanted.

Mama Pencils liked this one from David’s Bridal:

source

This was also an option from DB:

Oh, Twobirds, How I Love Thee... : wedding bridesmaid dresses S08 F12

source

So was this one, a popular one from all time fave J. Crew:

Oh, Twobirds, How I Love Thee... : wedding bridesmaid dresses Erez05

source

Or this:

Oh, Twobirds, How I Love Thee... : wedding bridesmaid dresses Erez 1

source

Bridesmaid AT returned the favor and found this option from Dillard’s:

Oh, Twobirds, How I Love Thee... : wedding bridesmaid dresses Brownd

source

I sent out an email to the bridesmaids and asked for their thoughts. There was no clear favorite, and I was beginning to worry we’d never find the right one. I hadn’t given up hope on the Twobirds dress—it just felt perfect!—when I was gchatting with bridesmaid CH and PF one Friday night (lame, I know).

I shared my dilemma with them both, and both went to work searching for a more perfect option. Within five minutes, CH returned with the most fabulous, amazing, cost effective alternate to the Twobirds dress! If only I had been smart enough to be specific with these brilliant women from the beginning!

The dress CH found was the answer. It’s convertible, jersey cotton, chocolate brown, and 99 bucks! Within 48 hours, I ordered 6 in the chocolate brown for my girls and blackberry for me (honeymoon dress!)

Where did we find the perfect dress? Victoria’s Secret! Here’s the dress in a couple of different styles and colors, all found here:

Oh, Twobirds, How I Love Thee... : wedding bridesmaid dresses V271572

Oh, Twobirds, How I Love Thee... : wedding bridesmaid dresses V271606

Oh, Twobirds, How I Love Thee... : wedding bridesmaid dresses V271605 Oh, Twobirds, How I Love Thee... : wedding bridesmaid dresses V286258 Oh, Twobirds, How I Love Thee... : wedding bridesmaid dresses V286257

I am really happy with our decision and I can’t wait to see my gals rock this dress in May!

How did you find your bridesmaids’ dresses? Did you find an alternate for a too-expensive item for your wedding? What was it?

i really liked the dresses in the first picture. i didnt kno there was a dress that can be so versatile.

actually for my bridesmaid dresses, i wanted each of my BMs to be comfortable and feel beautiful with what they are wearing that day. so i asked them to picked their own style but staying within the shade of dark pinks. nothing to purple or blue or red.

david’s bridal has a wide variety of styles. but i’m hesitant to shop or even browse through their actual store from the horror stories i’ve heard from other brides.

I love convertible dresses and I love V.S. - you can usually find hot & inexpensive clothing there, especially summer/vacation/honeymoon outfits!

Good choice!

The backs of those dresses are so cool! I’m a little too busty for those (we want people to look at the bride and the flowers, not my boobs), but they are going to look hot on your bridesmaids!

@Gerbera Daisy: eep! I haven’t heard too many DB horror stories- I’m sorry you have!
@peachesandtulips: agreed! thank you!
@Miss Biner: I know! it’s awesome!
@Miss Spaniel: me too! I actually like the lack of sheen in VS- it’s dressy but not :)
@Miss Pug: haha, I agree! thanks!
@Ms. Library:I think they will too! they’re actually not too bad for busty women- some of my b-maids are well endowed- and they actually have a good amount of material to support. also, there are bandeau’s that match that we can buy!

That’s great! As I was reading the story I was like “I think I saw one at VS” glad you were able to get what you wanted for a cheaper price!

Hi!
I’ve been looking at the convertible dress as well. FOREVER. Two Birds is beautiful but SO expensive. Please let me know how you like the VS one and the quality and if the convertible is easily “used”.
I also like the Dessy one, Etsy has a couple of really affordable options as well. But VS is def the cheapest one.
You know how in some of the styles the bottom hem points in two parts? Is that how the fabric is cut or just the way the dress is worn? I’m not too fond of that part of the VS dress…

P.S. Totally should buy myself one regardless for the HM.
P.P.S. Please post the dress on a real girl! =))))

I sooo wanted to go this route, but was steered away when I heard of how difficult it was to tie the convertible dresses..I still love them in theory though!

@Mrs. Mouse: me either! what I’m most excited about!
@Cole B: haha yay! great minds…
@Gerbera: the quality is actually really good. I tried it a number of different ways and I did many styles all by myself- the day of,we’ll be able to help each other. It is cut so that the sides are a bit longer…but so are the two birds dress and it’s not noticeable in a bad way- it simply gives it a good flow :) It isn’t highly obvious unless you lean against a poll with your back arched, like in the pic lol. I have some real photos of me in my dress on my personal computer and I’ll upload some on the board when I can. I’ll be at a bee happy hour tonight, so it might not be tonight, but it will def occur by tomorrow :) hope this helps!
@bluebutterfly: oh no! I actually did some testing and it wasn’t all that hard for me….I hope my girls agree :)

I had a really hard time deciding on BM dresses, we ended up going with the two JCrew dresses you posted pics of!! I signed up for their emails and we got both styles for under $150!! I wondered if those Twobird dresses really looked nice in person- sounds like they do! I think the VS dresses are a great option and they look really comfortable and I love the idea of each girl showing her own personality!! Good choice!

I love Two Birds! They really are so expensive! I can’t wait to hear what you think about the VS dresses when they arrive! Do your BMs have big boobies? Haha I know thats a weird question. I am worried that this might end up being a problem for my bridesmaids if I go with a dress like this!

@ALu731: I am glad you agree- I love the weight of the material and construction, even given the lower price!
@BVsmurfette: oh for sure! I couldn’t have done the styles without instructions!

I’ll post pics on the boards asap I promise all- they really are great dresses! I can’t wait to show you :)

I too loved two birds bm dresses but again they are way too expensive. I found a similar dress on etsy from isadora clothing for only $116! My girls who are well endowed all tryed on a sample and loved them. I highly recommend looking into etsy shop.

Wow Pencils! What a great option to have the same color but different style dresses. And what a fantastic price! Plus after the wedding the girls can continue to wear the dress in a variety of styles - man, your BM dresses rock!
