Oh, Twobirds, How I Love Thee…

Every single one of my bridesmaids has to travel to our wedding and incur the hefty costs associated with the trip. Because of this, I was determined to purchase their bridesmaid’s dresses for them! Of course, with six girls, this meant I’d have to keep costs down.

A few months back, I was dress shopping with PF (one of my b-maids!) for her wedding, and I tried on the Twobirds dress. This dress is beautiful. Classy, flattering, gorgeous. Also, over my price limit. I loved how every girl could wear it in the style that suited their personality best.

I tried to let this dress go and began my search by emailing bridesmaids CH and AT for their advice (though my brother is my MOH, he doesn’t really enjoy dresses… or online shopping… or shopping at all for that matter). I kept my searching within a few parameters: around $150 or less, available online or at a national chain bridal store, and yellow or brown dresses only.

After a few hours of online research I found some promising ensembles in the colors and price range I wanted.

Mama Pencils liked this one from David’s Bridal:

This was also an option from DB:

So was this one, a popular one from all time fave J. Crew:

Or this:

Bridesmaid AT returned the favor and found this option from Dillard’s:

I sent out an email to the bridesmaids and asked for their thoughts. There was no clear favorite, and I was beginning to worry we’d never find the right one. I hadn’t given up hope on the Twobirds dress—it just felt perfect!—when I was gchatting with bridesmaid CH and PF one Friday night (lame, I know).

I shared my dilemma with them both, and both went to work searching for a more perfect option. Within five minutes, CH returned with the most fabulous, amazing, cost effective alternate to the Twobirds dress! If only I had been smart enough to be specific with these brilliant women from the beginning!

The dress CH found was the answer. It’s convertible, jersey cotton, chocolate brown, and 99 bucks! Within 48 hours, I ordered 6 in the chocolate brown for my girls and blackberry for me (honeymoon dress!)

Where did we find the perfect dress? Victoria’s Secret! Here’s the dress in a couple of different styles and colors, all found here:

I am really happy with our decision and I can’t wait to see my gals rock this dress in May!

How did you find your bridesmaids’ dresses? Did you find an alternate for a too-expensive item for your wedding? What was it?

I love VS dresses too (especially since I used to work there)! Couldn’t help but order myself a few earlier this week during their semi annual sale!

Miss Pencil, I had the Butter by Nadia version of the dress (also pricey, but I got it in my perfect wedding color) and it was such a GREAT choice to have a convertible dress! With nine bridesmaids who are all different size and shapes and sense of modesty, it was great to have so many choices! Each girl ROCKED their own version. An extra plus was when our wedding day was 30 degrees colder than was predicted and some of the girls changed their dresses to provide them more coverage! This jersey version is awesome and I think I might get one too!!!!

I loved a Lula Kate dress, but at $250 it was just not affordable for half of the girls. I spent a couple of weeks scouring department stores and other retailers without finding anything. I’d originally been looking at dresses on J Crew but most of them seemed to fall within the $150-$200 price range too. I checked back a few weeks ago and found the perfect dress for only $100–and it wasn’t even the sale price. Cotton embossed Lorelei in classic navy–perfect! We might accent it with a grey sash, but we have time to play around with that too.

AH! We got these dresses too! In blackberry! And I am so so so in love with them and completely kicking myself for not ordering some from Sears when they were selling them (for $40!)
My BMs are actually complaining because they want to wear the dresses now! …it’s like music to a bride’s ears :)

If you or any of your bridesmaids have VERY BASIC knowledge of sewing, you can create this dress FAST AND EASY. Google “rostitchery convertible dress” and the first result that pops up is a picture tutorial how to create this dress:

There is also a craftster forum of dozens of girls who’ve made the dress and posted pics (for easy access click the “Show images only” tab above the topic headline to only see pics):

I made one myself – it’s black and has a “handkerchief” bottom – u know a square skirt instead of circle ^_^

    Hope this helps!

I had the same problem with Twobirds! And I still can’t put them out of my head – though the Victoria’s secret one looks like a good option! I also found a template to make one by myself … I may attempt it this summer to see what I can do!
