A Little Girl Talk, Part 2

January 15th, 2010 @ 12:25 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

So remember when I was whining about my boobs and how I felt self-conscious all the time? Yeah, well I can’t say that’s totally changed, but there has been a major improvement. I finally decided that at the young age of 28 I should get professionally fitted for a bra for the first time in my life. Before I went I was terrified to go, hence the reason that it took me 28 years to do it (OK, so I didn’t need a bra when I was 5, but you get the idea). I had this vision in my head of me standing there topless with a random lady and a tape measurer. Yeah, well that didn’t happen.

I went to the Nordstrom lingerie department and did several walk throughs, trying to build up the courage to ask someone to measure me. As I cruised up and down the aisles and aisles of bras, a sweet girl asked me if I needed help. Although instinctually I wanted to say no, I decided to actually say yes. She took me back to the dressing room and proceeded to measure my band size with my clothes on. Phew! Huge sigh of relief. She asked me what size band I’d been wearing and I said “36″. She told me that I was a very small 34. Oops. Strike one. Then she told me that to measure the cup size, they would ask me to try on several bras and then check the fit. Great, I didn’t have to stand there topless with some measuring tape!! So she went and pulled a few bras based on my guesstimate of my size and we got to work.

I put on the first one that I thought was my size, and then Anna (my new BFF from Nordstrom) came in to the check the fit. Yeah, it didn’t fit. Way too small. So, we went up one cup size. Anna came in again, um… yeah, still too small, so we went up yet another cup size. At this point I didn’t even want to know what letter was on that little flap anymore. I just wanted a good fit. Well, lucky for me that third one fit perfectly! Not only did it fit perfectly, but I also looked so much smaller because I wasn’t shoving myself into an ill-fitting bra. I felt great. And it was the first time I could actually say that I felt happy about how I looked in a bra. I proceeded to try on about 30 other bras and left the store with 5 in hand. I immediately went home and got rid of all my old, wrong sized bras. The pile looked something like this:

So what would I change about this awesome shopping experience? My outfit. I was wearing tights and a dress when I went shopping. Which meant that each time Anna came in to check the fit, I was standing there in just my tights. Not a very good look.

But, I definitely recommend this to everyone. If you have not already been professionally fitted, it is time to go. I even managed to find the undergarments for my wedding dress. I am so relieved!!

Has anyone else been professionally fitted? What was your experience like?

I get professionally fitted about once a year just to make sure I’m still wearing the right size. I also recommend it to all my friends. I don’t know why people are so afraid…it’s not scary!

My only advice is, don’t get fitted at VS. Their sizing is WAY off. (I haven’t fit into their DDs since I was about 15)

Ha, I have a visual in my head now of you standing there in your tights and a bra, too funny! Hmmm, I’m wondering if I should go now and I wonder how off my idea of my size is.

YES! It wasn’t until I was professionally fitted that I realized that sizes went beyond DD. And I just got fitted again and wound up with an ugly, sturdy, but ultimately flattering bra.

Ohhhh yes. Nordstroms, in fact! I also had a very comfortable and pleasant experience and I also didn’t know that I was wearing the wrong size until she told me and wow! What a difference it makes.

I need to get fitted, definitely. I’m in the same boat with you though, I have horrible visions of me topless and some weird lady measuring the goods. Weird.

I thought I was one size for most of my life. Then I took a part time job at Victoria’s Secret and we had to demonstrate how to measure on each other. Turns out I was wrong. It was a great feeling.

I heart Nordstrom’s bra department. I went there right before Christmas with my FMIL to get a longline bra to wear under my wedding dress. The girl was awesome, the bra fits wonderfully, and I feel good in it.

Sidenote: I wish nipples were like air valves, where you could pump up your boobs when you wanted more va-va-voom, and deflate them for running.

I need to go do this, especially since my favorite bra BROKE when I put it on the other day! I’ve had the same fear of standing there naked, so since that didn’t happen to you, maybe I’ll grow a little courage and actually go get fitted one of these days.

I LOVE Nordstrom’s bra people! Bridesmaid Al brought me when we were in grad school and made me get measured. She even had to ask someone for me! I am so glad I did it. The girl was wonderful and I felt and looked so much better!

@Ms Potato Chips: Yeah, one of the earlier ones I tried on fit, but I felt like I was 80, so I asked if we could find some that might be a little more flattering. Thankfully, I found some.
@CHK: That would be awesome!
@Lillindy: Yes, go!! They make you feel so comfortable!

thats awesome! I haven’t been fit since maybe high school when I got up the C range. I should do it again since the 34D I just bought only goes over one boob! LOL Glad you’re feeling better about it

I need to do this! I have before, but it was before I gained a bajillion pounds and my boobs went up like 3 sizes! So glad you’re comfy now, and I’m giggling at you in just tights - surprise Anna!

I need to do this too! My heart sank the other day when I trotted into VS for their sale and the 4 different 34Ds didn’t fit….36DD is a bit much! I just wish we had a Nordstrom’s here.

i was fitted at the calvin klein store recently and it was a great experience! i’ve always felt self conscious about my chest size but it turned out that while i’ve been wearing a cup bras my whole life, i’m actually a c cup! and a well fitting bra did wonders for my self esteem too.

I need to do this. I *think* I know what size I am, but I’m not exactly positive. You’ve inspired me!

@fanatic888: I too worked part time at VS- and I should know better, but I recently discovered that I am wearing the wrong size.

Fro Yo, you inspire me to go get professionally fitted!

Oh good you went! It’s such a great thing to own well-fitting bras!

Yes, it’s a teensy bit embarrassing but worth it.
