I am so excited that we are able to have a flower girl and a ring bearer at our wedding! Our adorable flower girl and ring bearer are Mr. Buttons’ niece and nephew. I couldn’t be more excited about planning their part in our day!

Although I think it is very cute to have a flower walk down the aisle, scattering flower petals… I’m not sure if it is in the cards.

Since she is on the young side (she will be 3 1/2 at our wedding), I figure it might be easier for her to simply hold something while she walks down the aisle, rather than holding a basket AND throwing petals.

Enter… the pomander!

I think a pomander (or, as some call it, a “kissing ball”) will be the perfect accessory for our flower girl to make her trek down the aisle! I love that it has a loop that she can either hold, or we can put around her wrist like a bracelet!

Also, another plus is the DIY aspect! I priced out a pomander at the florist and gasped in horror! Plus, I imagine a pomander of real flowers would be easily destructible. So, I am opting to make this as one of my projects! I have seen numerous blog posts from other brides who’ve created their own pomanders, and I am going to join the ranks!

What do you think about using a pomander for the flower girl, as opposed to the traditional basket with petals?

I love pomanders! Our flowerd girl is carrying one. And, we’re having 6 at our “altar” (we’re getting married outside). My mom’s making all 7 for around $30 a piece!

Pomanders are VERY easy to make! My FG won’t be holding one, but I made some for aisle decoration.

Everyone always makes them look so easy! And it’s such a great alternative for the potentially shy little ones. Can’t wait to see your creation!

There are so many options for DIY pomanders - fabric, paper, fake flowers… I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I think they are super cute!! (unless your flower girl is like mine and is just dying to throw those petals!!)

@Miss Nachos: I know…I hope its as easy as it looks…I haven’t tackled this project as of yet.

@honeybun: She is only 3 years old as of now, so I don’t think she has the concept of “flower girl” down yet…hopefully that means she won’t be upset about not throwing petals!

I did it, and I highly suggest it! I posted a blog with tips & tricks (that helped DIY challenged moi) if you look in my archives. :) Good luck!

Agree with Honeybun. I love the pom but our 6 year old flower girl made the decision for us. Must. Have. Petals.

I made a pomander for our flower girl! They don’t let anyone throw petals at our church but we definitely wanted her to have something. It was pretty easy to make.

I love this idea! I don’t want the mess or potential stain-y-ness (it’s a work, shut up) of the floor with petals, but I don’t know what we’re going to do yet, since we’ll have 2 flower girls!

I really like it! I’m thinking about doing it for our flower girl too since she’s only going to be 2 1/2 (reallllllly young, I know, but she’s important!) by the time the wedding rolls around. When I mentioned it to the Mom, she when all traditional and didn’t get it. Oh well. :)

I love pomanders for flower girls… another plus, you won’t slip on a rogue rose petal walking down the aisle yourself. ;)

We’re having 2 flower girls, and they will both be holding pomanders. The younger one will have just turned 3, so we also thought that a basket with petals might be a bit much for her. I think pomanders are so expensive b/c it actually takes A LOT of flowers to cover the whole ball. We chose some pretty cheap flowers (green button mums that grow in our florist’s garden) to keep the cost down a bit.

I’m doing pomanders too! More fun for the girls to hold and swing around - it doubly functions as a toy for them! Also, our church doesn’t allow any petals, confetti or anything at all to be tossed on the church floor. I love the idea.

I found it cheaper to order slik flower ones online than making them myself. I was just about to order them then I found mini bouquets at Michael’s.
But I’m wishing I kept the poms… sigh!

Oh, but we have 5 flower girls so cost was key!
