Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

Something’s Brewin’

January 15th, 2010 @ 5:44 pm by Ms Potato Chips

And that something is a whole lotta beer.

Mr. Potato Head and I have dabbled in home brew a few times, but we’re really home brew dilettantes: the real star of the brewsky is Mr. PH’s brother, who makes his own recipes, toasts his own wheat, and can tell you the different between Cascade hops and… other types of hops.

Last weekend we (and I use “we” loosely) decided to try out a test batch for the wedding. Potato Bro said he could make whatever we liked. Whatever we liked! In beer! I was immediately paralyzed by indecision so he suggested a light wheat beer with bitter orange. Yum!

And then magic began to happen!

Something’s Brewin’ : wedding alcohol 1 1

Something’s Brewin’ : wedding alcohol 2 2

Something’s Brewin’ : wedding alcohol 3 3

Something’s Brewin’ : wedding alcohol 4 4

PotatoBro ordered a keg draft system so we can offer our guests draft beer. AND that will save us from having to come up with labels to put on bottles (although that would be a cute touch).

I can’t wait to see how the brew came out, and if bitter orange wheat beer will be “the one” to serve our guests! What kinds of specialty drinks are you serving? Anyone else attempting a home brew?

We (when I say “we” I mean “he”) are brewing for the rehearsal but our reception site won’t let us bring in our own brew : (

That’s awesome! I love wheat and orange beer, almost like a Blue Moon w/ an orange slice! Or an Ithaca Brewery Apricot!

Big Bro Pretzel is brewing us each our own case of beer for our Bachelor/ bachelorette parties. Yay! I approve of wheat and orange beer :) (but not fruiting the beer- I repeat “Do not fruit the beer”) lol.

Mmmm, beer. Wheat beer with bitter orange sounds delicious. We currently have cases of hard cider Mr. Snow made. I wish we’d thought to make it for the wedding.

Homebrewing is so much fun - my fiance and I do it together a lot. In fact, we really wanted it to be a part of our wedding - however, we’re living in Michigan and getting married in Washington state, so traveling with beer would be impossible. We can’t even have friends brew because of the rules of our venue. Oh well - it’ll just have to be something everyone comes over to our house for!

Oh droooooool! Good luck, homebrewing is full of tasty adventures! We had a great one that wasn’t quite right, we called it the expoldo-beer, delicious but dangerous.

Mr. S wanted to try this so badly, but I nixed it due to the tiny tiny tiny size of our kitchen (and apartment!)

I got my FI a home brew kit for christmas I keep wanting him to break it out but he hasn’t yet. I think it’s great you’re brewing your own.

Mr. KM fully intends to get into this sometime in the near future (once we move). His friends are into it, though, and really aren’t half bad at it!

Ah, the flaw of our destination wedding! We did make a light, lemony ginger beer for the local pre-wedding party, but there was no way to include homebrew at our wedding. Lucky you!

We brew too! We use a turkey fryer though since it holds all 5 gallons. The wort smells like grape-nuts! Yum!

Yay! Us too!!! Our first wedding batch trial was also a orange too!It was a Continental Pilsner (Brewer’s Best) that we added some orange zest too which gave it a great light summery taste. We’re about to starting batch #2. We need to get more consistent because there were certain bottles that were FANTASTIC and some that were eh. We’re bottling them for favors/seating assignment. =)
FI & I have been brewing together for about 2 years now and we’re both microbrew lovers which is what started the whole homebrew-ing.

And oh, for anyone else that is home brewing & bottling their favors. A great tip is to save all the bottles from microbrews. Those typical dark brown bottles? They are the exact same ones that you buy at your local home brew store. We’ve been saving since even before we got engaged so there’s no need to go out and purchase bottles. =)
And def only the dark brown ones because the lighter ones let in too much light which will affect the flavor of the beer.
