About Mrs. Buttons

Sometimes I Cave Under Pressure

January 15th, 2010 @ 11:41 am by Mrs. Buttons

Let’s talk petals. Remember when I told you how I’d won flowers at the wedding expo? Needless to say, I was excited to meet with the florist and get a conversation started. Mommy Buttons and I made an appointment at the shop, and I immediately did what I promised myself I would avoid: I let the vendor take me for a bit of a ride.

On one hand, the vendors are professionals, and yes… you want to take their advice (hey, they do this for a living, trust them!). However, letting them steer you in a direction you didn’t really have in mind? Nooooot so cool!

I don’t know much about flowers, but I had a vague idea of what I was looking for. I brought in a picture of a bouquet that I loved:

She confidently told me that she could recreate this exact bouquet. OK… we were off to a good start! I told her that I want the flowers to be simple, green, and white. She then began to explain her entire vision for my flowers: hydrangeas hydrangeas hydrangeas…

She even suggested green hydrangeas for my bridesmaids’ bouquets:

So far, I was feeling OK with her suggestions. Hydrangeas are definitely beautiful! Then she moved on to the bouts for the guys. She suggested a calla lily. To be honest, I like them, but they weren’t what I had in mind, so I said that to her. She then suggested to switch the callas in my bouquet to white roses, and have the bouts be roses to match. ***Sigh*** White roses weren’t my vision, either. I wanted the bouquet as-is; I didn’t want to change the flowers around. At this point, I sensed the florist was getting frustrated with me. She started to go on about how the men’s boutonnieres need to match the bride’s bouquet, so I had to pick a flower to go in my bouquet that could also be in the bouts.

I was perplexed. I hadn’t heard of this before! Although I could see the logic, it wasn’t that important to me. Who is going to notice if the flower on my groom’s lapel is also a flower in my bouquet??? But, she wasn’t budging on this issue, so I dropped it for the time being. Mommy Buttons and I left our appointment with a proposal and pricing (which is also a very sobering moment… am I right?!?!), and overall I felt a little uneasy about what had happened.

In the end, I was very happy to get this experience out of the way early on. In all of my planning books/online research/etc, I had constantly read about how you need to go into vendor meetings with clear and concise ideas, make sure that your vision is understood, and to make sure that you are comfortable with the vendor. I had failed miserably… I didn’t have a clear vision to articulate, and then when the florist to give me all of her opinions and didn’t really listen to my own, I just shut down. Although I thought her ideas would be beautiful, I wasn’t incredibly excited. And, when you are getting ready to shell out hundreds, possibly thousands, of dollars on flowers, you need to feel confident! I made a vow to not allow the same situation to occur with other vendors that I met with!

So… I let the flower issue stew for a few months, and eventually I figured out a plan that is going to work for us… but explaining that is for another day…

Did you allow a vendor to “take you for a ride?” Did you have a hard time standing your ground at times during your vendor meetings?

Yes, I did this with one of my first florist meetings and then sobered up and met with another one and was much more pushy about MY vision. So glad I did!

hm, that is a weird rule for her to fixate on. don’t worry–you didn’t fail. it’s really hard when speaking to a wedding vendor, because presumably they have lots of experience and so we kind of assume that they know what they’re talking about! but yes, get back in there and nail her to the wall with your vision.

I’d be a bit cautious with this vendor. A $500 credit could really be a scam to increase business since your florist can easily jack up the price of your package overall. Hydrangeas are relatively inexpensive flowers, which is great if your budget is limited, but a problem if your florist is charging too much for them. I’m not sure what she was planning on charging you, but I would recommend that you get another floral proposal just to make sure that you are getting a good deal.

Aw, I’m sorry you left feeling defeated. Don’t let them push you around! It sucks that you can’t really go to someone else to find someone you click with after winning the package. Stay strong, Buttons! You should definitely get what you want.

@Mrs. Star: I’m glad it worked out for you! :) I must be strong!

@Miss Pug: I totally was surprised by that “rule.” I mean, I get it…but who really notices that detail? Really?

@professorbee: Thanks for the advice. Her prices are similar to the other quotes I have, so I’m not worried about that. And, we are only going to do the bouquets/bouts from them…so I’ll pretty much be using only the $500 credit…which works out great!

@Miss Nachos: Yeah that was the one thing I wasn’t happy about…I didn’t really get a choice, per se….although I could always go with someone else, how do you stick your nose up at $500?

Stay true to your vision! I got pushed around too, but by my family members, not the florist! lol.

That’s ridiculous. I just stood my ground and kept reiterating what I wanted, and showed lots of pictures until my vendors *got it*. They eventually did.

My Mom also was insistent that the bout flowers be a part of my bouquet. I just cared that everything was the same color family. I didn’t want red roses but not knowing anything about flowers just wanted long red stems of something. The florist after 3 visits suggested something that made finally made me happy. I had a harder time with the florist than with any other vendor.

I definitely got pushed around by a caterer who also functioned as a day-of-coordinator. There were some pretty important things that she was being pushy about!!. I was like, really? You really want to force it down my throat that we should have a “first look” when I’ve already told you that we both don’t want to? Kind of a personal detail, ya know? We didn’t end up hiring her…

@Miss Sewing: Awww haha pushy family members! :(

@Miss Scissors: What is sad is that the lady does very pretty flowers, but she is very old fashioned and kind of opinionated on her visions. But thankfully the store manager is young and is very helpful in dealing with the floral designer…

@Marinara: Eeek, I’m glad you didn’t hire her!

I most definitely did. I was worried my ideas were lame and that these experts knew better than I did. But then I realized that who cares if they knew better, I knew what I liked, so I ended up speaking up. It definitely took a little while though. It sounds like you’re going to get what you want, and I can’t wait to hear more about that!

I wish I could have practiced on a few people I didn’t want to hire to get the questions down and my thoughts together first. I had a slightly different florist experience- I showed her my ideas, she agreed, said I have some ideas, and what that proposal contained had NOTHING to do with what I said or pictured.

I had my florist meeting so long ago that I definitely got pushed around because I didn’t have a clear (or any) vision of what I wanted in the flowers. Now I’m nervous about making a follow up appointment because I’m going to want to change things around! I’ll have to be strong this time though :)

@Miss Frozen Yogurt: Yay…good! In the end I just shut up about the stupid bout thing; my meeting was back in August…so I knew that I could just put my foot down later on, since it was just an initial meeting…

@lkbphmd: Going to a few for “practice” is kind of a brilliant idea!

@Miss Guinea Pig: Yeah, I think I”m pretty much in the same boat as you! :)

I get bullied by vendors all the time, that’s why I always bring Mama Pudding to meetings with me! She’s a no-bull type of lady :P

I’ll be for real — vendors try walk all over me. I think it’s because I look 15. But if I’m paying for it, it should be what I want, not what my vendor wants. And we aren’t having bouts… hope the florists I meet with don’t freak out. :)

Is it totally silly that I would rather do my own flowers than deal with a florist? Seriously. My mom is like “wait.. you aren’t even PAYING for it” but I’m dead. serious.
