About Mrs. Pencils

So, I’m a fail blogger and totally exposed “the moment” without setting you all up with all the back story! So, without further ado, I present, “setting the scene,” a prequel to “the moment”….

~~~
Gosh, it’s a beautiful night… That was the phrase that should have alerted me to the dramatic moment (cue music!) that was about to take place. As it was, I was oblivious—though not for lack of bugging Mr. Pencils for weeks and weeks about when this moment would take place. Which moment? Why, this moment of course:
It all started during our cross-country road trip in the summer of 2008. Mr. Pencils and I had taken to the roads with his cousin, called Sally.
We all decided to take this adventure for many reasons. Mainly, each of us truly wanted to experience a USA road trip and we wanted to do it before gas got even more expensive (please recall that gas in the summer of 2008 was at an all time high of 4 or more dollars a gallon. We were pretty convinced it was just going to go up! We now don’t acknowledge that gas is again half the price it was then… arg). Also, we were taking an Alaskan cruise with his entire family and thought this was the perfect opportunity to do it!
So we set out, and drove from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to Tacoma, Washington in 9 short days. We saw some amazing things, including Mr. Pencils’ first trip to Yellowstone National Park! I was so excited about this because my family visited Yellowstone at least twice a year growing up. It was so fun to share this place with Mr. P. Before I move on, here are some pics from the first leg of the trip:
Me and Mr. Pencils at Lake Couer d’Alene in my great home state of Idaho!
Fast forward past a wonderful stay with Bridesmaid AP, a sketchy bus trip from Tacoma to Vancouver, a long line to get on a big boat and… we were on an Alaskan Cruise!
On our third day of the cruise, the whole family woke up early for an excursion to go zip lining in an Alaskan rainforest. I was really excited, but also a bit frustrated with Mr. Pencils. The day before, we had one of those all out, open hearted discussions about WHY we weren’t getting married yet and WHY we had to wait. We had been dating for 4 and a half years, had stuck through some pretty trying times, including my first year as a teacher (a time where I barely recognized myself half the time), and we knew we were going to get married eventually.
I asked Mr. Pencils why we were waiting. He gave the answers we had rehearsed and repeated times before—we’re still pretty young, we’ve seen so many young marriages fail or struggle—but I was sick of these excuses. Both of us maintained we would be much closer to 30 before we married. Yet, now, it seemed pointless to me that we weren’t getting engaged because of other people’s and society’s expectations. So, we were NOT getting engaged BECAUSE people expected us to?!?! That was just as dumb to me AS getting engaged because people expected us to. And, I told him so.
On our balcony, staring out at the rough sea, with the wind whipping at our faces, we had the defining moment. The moment where one person says, “This is either it, or it isn’t. We can’t wait forever.” Luckily, Mr. Pencils didn’t wait too much longer.
SO! After zip lining, Mr. Pencils, his brother and I were eating some amazing fish and chips (yum!) when he looked at me and said, “Want to go look at engagement rings?”
My. jaw. dropped.
“Of course!”
So we dragged his little brother to the myriad of jewelry stores that only exist at cruise ports. Five minutes in to the first store, we found it. IT. And you know the rest of the story, hive!  We found a great ring and had a sweet and simple proposal.
Did you have a moment or conversation that cemented the deal for you and your fiance? What was it?
That’s a really sweet story. (And as someone with only 2 weeks of student teaching under her belt, I’m scared to think what the first year teaching looks like if student teaching is this insane!)
So glad Mr. Pencils made the decision when he did!
Mr HB and I had one of those moments. A few of our married friends were having a baby, another couple was getting married…we saw a bunch of our friends moving forward in their relationships. While I was happy for them all, I was sad because…well I wanted it too! Plus the girls in these couples are much younger than me. So one night while eating dinner I was all mopey and Mr. HB asked me what was wrong and I just started crying. I told him I was wondering when it was my turn and that I am in no rush, but just felt like I was being passed by all these girls younger than me. We talked about how I’m a city girl now living in a small town where a lot of girls main goals in life is to get married whereas mine is to first develop my career. It made me feel better…and then he said that I should start giving him ideas of what I wanted when it was time! Fast forward to 5 months later and he proposed!
We had more of an ongoing “we’re getting married” dialogue from pretty early in our relationship, rather than one big conversation to seal the deal. Regardless though, now that we’re engaged it’s nice to move forward both in wedding planning and in life and do it all together! Such cute photos too!
We definitely had the moment. Although for us it was the other way around. My FI had been bugging me for years to get married but we were young and kept experiencing lots of changes (finishing school, living in asia, going back to school and starting long distance…).
Finally when one of my best friends got engaged (the first from our group) my FI laid down the law. We were on vacation in Barcelona and I had just gotten the news via email before we went to lunch We both had the whole marriage thing strongly in our minds and so my FI was like, okay, when are you going to let me marry you? And we sketched out a life plan (the restaurant was one of those where you could write on the table cloth) and stuck to it. As soon as our year of long-distance was up, he proposed, like clock-work.
I think our moment involved talking about hardwood flooring, so you win this round.
@UCLAMeghan & @Jessie516& @tea: those first years of teaching ARE hard! hats off to anyone going through them or about to!
@Miss Scissors & @Miss Sewing & @KMSull:haha, if by “adorable” you mean embarrassing and dorky, you’re right! :) thanks gals
@HunnyBear: it’s so hard! I am so glad your FI and you were able to make a good decision for your relationship!
@ms. awesome: that’s great! I think because we met in college, Mr. P and I put off the topic of marriage until we felt mature enough to discuss it :)
@gill84: haha! i love that it was your FI that brought it up…our’s was def mutual like yours, but, yes, I was “typical” and did the bugging :)
@Miss Ribbons: haha, sounds like a good convo!
I think we had a pretty open discussion about where we were in our relationship and were on the same page abut getting engaged (and roughly when). But when he came home with a big fancy mac when I was still waiting for my ring (which he wanted to pay for in cash and was saving up for) I LOST IT. Picked a fight and wen out with friends for drinks. What I didn’t know? Was that he had the ring for a few weeks at that point and was waiting for our upcoming vacation….oops….
