How We Got Here

How We Got Here : wedding relationships Us4 us4

Ribs and I met in May at the end of my third year of undergrad. It was going into the summer term and I had been accepted as an opinion columnist on the college paper. He was the opinion editor. Scandalous!

After some gchat flirtations, we started dating. We weren’t attached at the hip that summer because he was finishing courses to graduate, but it was just sort of lovely being with someone that was on the same level as me. I had come out of a relationship with someone who had major commitment problems, so it was nice to learn from that and be a better person for Ribs.

By July we started to plan a trip, where I would drive back with him to Maryland and fly back to Indiana in time for the fall semester. I think it was then that we were starting to acknowledge we saw a future in the relationship. Two semesters later, he flew in for my graduation (there were visits in between, don’t worry!).

I won’t pretend that the proposal was a surprise, a shock, or anything like that. I helped pick out the ring - I’ll share that story later - and pretty much knew he would ask sometime before I moved to DC. However, I didn’t expect him to get too excited and ask me the night before I graduated, when we were in bed! (It was very G-rated, worry not).

It’s not an amazing proposal story and it’s a little embarrassing to tell to family. So we lie. Yes. We tell people he proposed at this gazebo on campus.

Sometimes, after being plied with alcohol, the truth may slip out of me with a lot of giggling. I think the real story is very us — we’re tragically lazy. But compared to all of the amazing proposal stories in the blog world, it seems… quaint.

Have you ever embellished your proposal story?

I’ve de-embellished our proposal story, if that’s a word.

My FI proposed with a plastic ring - wanting me to think that he hadn’t gotten the real one yet and that it would be a total surprise when he pulled it out…but I could just tell he was lying! (come on, I know him very well). So instead of the real e-ring being a surprise, I was just standing there saying ‘okay yeah whatever that’s nice, but bring out the real one now’.

He likes to tell that part, but I always leave it out because it didn’t work out the way he wanted.

We embellish alot because FI’s first 2 plans were sabotaged by UPS not delivering the ring on time. Oh and again Welcome Miss Ribbons! So happy to hear your journey! :o)

Oh I am with you 100%. My FI was so nervous that he was a stumbling, mumbling, sweating mess! I know he meant well and I also know the words did NOT come out like he meant and I said yes, regardless. But I want to protect his pride from friends & family. They never need to know the details of how it went down!!!

That’s a cute story…my sis-in-law lied for a while too! My brother proposed while they were in the shower. :/

I think that if a proposal fits you, there’s no reason for it to be over-the-top. Or perhaps that’s just what I convinced myself after my own proposal. :-) My husband and I were hungover after attending a wedding the night before, and he proposed to me in our kitchen, over bacon and eggs, while I was in my grungiest pajamas. While I never lied about how it went down, I definitely elaborated, saying things like, “It’s so special that he did it in the first home that we have owned together,” and the such. I think your engagement story is cute. :-)

I’ve felt like embellishing sometimes, but I haven’t done it yet. Nothing wrong with a low-key story! :)

Ha, that is hilarious!!! :)

I love that wishing well on campus. I have photographed so many weddings there! I’m told that if you kiss a guy in that wishing well at midnight that’s who you’ll marry.

I like that story. ;) We tell people the truth, most of the time, but if we’re feeling cheeky we not only embellish, we go far beyond (I believe a rhino with the ring on its horn was involved in our last story).

ha! we embellish the how-we-met story. or rather, we leave out some key details. everyone always says… “aww, that’s nice” if family knew the whole story, they’d be saying “oh my god!”

We definitely un-embellish (de-embellish?) and leave out a few details. I believe the first words out of my mouth when he proposed were “But, you promised it wouldn’t be this weekend!” Also, I was so convinced during the proposal that he wasn’t actually proposing, that I looked completely bored/out of it.
We don’t tell people that part.

I’m actually a de-embellish too! My FI pulled off such a crazy/storybook proposal that I’m almost embarrassed to tell the whole story because I think that people will think I’m lying or that we’re too sappy! haha. Usually I just tell them the bare-bones “He proposed on a beach in Mexico on our first night of my birthday vacation” and leave it at that unless they ask me for more details.

@CorgiTales & @redsmarties: really interesting that you guys de-embellish! We mostly fib because it’s just awkward to tell family we were in bed and the gazebo is just about the most cliche romantic place on campus :)

I LOVE the Well House! A couple of my friends have gotten engaged there. My fiance actually planned on doing it there but there were crowds of people and he got nervous. :) I like to add that part in when I tell our proposal story. As cliche as it is, I like the history behind it, and it still is very romantic. My “real” story is similar to yours (it was at my apartment). hehe

LOL I don’t know our real story, yet, but I”m sure it’ll be super quiet and just us… people will be disappointed but it’s okay. But holy COW that gazebo is gorgeous.
