I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! Dress Mock-Up Stage 3

January 18th, 2010 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Sewing

I’d like to credit my sources up front for this one - it was ALL done by my amazing Mr. Sewing!

With our leftover muslin pieces, he decided to try and make the top corset with our pattern:

He extended the bottom of the pattern by about 2 inches, since I wanted it to fall at my hips rather than my waist. We also decided that instead of buttons, we’d modify the pattern to use a corset-style, lace-up back.

Excuse me while I gush a bit - Isn’t it beaaauuuttifulll?

Dress Mock-Up Stage 3 : wedding diy wedding dress Dressf What do you think? should we add some straps? (Sorry it’s a little blurry!)

Here’s the back:

Next steps? I’m going to try and make some fabric flowers to pin onto the back, and maybe the shoulder if we go with straps. Then we’ll be ready for the real thing!

Has your significant other surprised you with any secret skills lately?

WOW! It (and you) looks beautiful! I think it looks great without straps, although a halter ala Mrs. Peeptoe might be cute. Honestly, I just like the simplicity of it :)

@Mrs. Beagle: @asunw: Yeah, I like it without too, but I’m still scared of the possibility of “wardrobe malfunctions”! >.>”

So good that he lowered the bottom of the corset - I do a lot of Renaissance costuming and find that I almost always have to elongate the torso part to make it sit where I want it to sit and not look like it will fit a midget.

His grommet-ing looks love-rly!

that’s so pretty! you should totally sell this prototype.

also, i’d go without straps as well. with a corset back, you can tighten it enough that it should stay in place =)

Sew impressive! (hee, hee) I do a bit of sewing myself but would never endeavor to do my own wedding dress! Your dress looks amazing!! Have you revealed the final dress fabric yet? And btw, I think it would look lovely with a flower or two!

@Miss Sewing: I was really scared of “wardrobe malfunctions” with my dress too because it was strappless & zipped, but I lasted 7 hours without any! With a corset you can tighten it as needed, so you should be fine. :)
