Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!

Escort… Flowers?

January 18th, 2010 @ 4:37 pm by Mrs. Guinea Pig

In my last post about paper flowers, I showed you this picture:

Escort... Flowers? : wedding placecards stationery Flowers022 flowers022

(yep, the same flowers Mrs. Poodle made a million of!)

After I mentioned I was at a loss for what to do with these lovely flowers for our reception, Mrs. Hot Cocoa pointed me towards Mrs. Bell Pepper’s escort cards and that’s when I knew I had to try it. Escort flowers! Mrs. Bell Pepper made her petals freehand and the part I liked most were the leaves with the seating information.

(Mrs. Bell Pepper’s escort cards)

Another version of flowers-with-leaves escort cards that I really liked were Mrs. Stilettos:

(photo from Mrs. Stiletto’s details recap post, how she made them in this post)

My flowers are a little different though, because of their depth - and I couldn’t figure out a way to put the leaf coming out of the side like these due to the cone-like shape at the base of these flowers. My solution was to try cutting the bottoms off of the flowers:

Escort... Flowers? : wedding placecards stationery Compare compare

(the flower on the right I just made with scrap gray paper)

I did this so that the flower could sit flat on the table, in a way that the blue flower on the left cannot:

(pointy blue flower, flat-bottomed gray flower)

This way, the flower can sit top side up on the table and I can attach the leaves I want to use underneath, to the bottom of the flower instead of the side:

(Escort card super rough draft mockup)

I just cut these leaves freehand out of some white paper to get an idea but I seriously need to find a better leaf design. The actual escort cards would be blue paper flowers with pale yellow leaves that have the name on one leaf and the table number on the second, as you see in this draft. However as usual it seems, I’ve solved one problem only to create another! Now that these flowers have a flat bottom so I can set them flat on a table, there’s a gaping hole in the bottom where I had to cut the points off!

(draft flower from the top, bottom and side views)

I really want the flower to be able to sit on the table, which means the pointy bottom has to go, but what do I do about the fact that you can now see through the flower?! My only thought is to cut out a round piece of paper and glue it to the bottom, to which the leaves will also be glued, but that seems like it might be a messy solution once the guests pick up the flowers to take to the tables. Any ideas?

Are you doing nontraditional escort ’cards’? What are your favorite escort/place cards that you’ve seen?

maybe a round sticker to cover the bottom of the flower? then you can use that to attach the leaves as well

I am pretty sure that we will be doing small bags of seeds with names and table numbers on them as escort cards/favors (keeping in theme as we will be at a Botanical Garden and our invites are on plantable paper) - this look great, you’re so crafty!

Love it!! I had originally wanted to do the flowers you’re making, but I struggled with the whole problem of how to attach the leaf. Your idea is great!

Oh and for the leaves I just made a teardrop shape in Microsoft Publisher….super simple.

@tea: Ooh, a sticker would be much less messy. But if it was round, it would stick out in between the petals… would I shape it to the holes in the bottom!? Yikes.
@Miss Pretzel: YES! Leaf designs would be amazing. I apparently suck at designing leaves :)
@Miss Sewing: Thanks!!
@eriqua: love the seeds idea to go with your plantable paper and botanical garden! Great way to tie it all together.
@Mrs. Stiletto: Ooh, excellent tip, thanks! And this makes me nervous you scrapped these flowers!

I might be on my own about this but I don’t know why you need to cover the bottom. I think the flowers are really cute the way they are and if you have a colorful tablecloth it might be cute to see the color poke through the flower.
They’re super cute no matter what you do!

Those are so cute! I actually think it’d look really good to glue a circle of paper to the bottom, especially if the leaves are glued between the paper and the flower. I think it’d look great!

@Miss Guinea Pig: maybe a smaller sticker in diameter. you don’t need to cover the whole thing and not too many people are going to look underneath!

Why don’t you just glue the leaves to the flowers in a way that they cover the hole in the bottom of your flowers? Then the center of your flowers will be the contrasting color of your leaves. I think that is a quick fix that will look nice.

I think bunnylovesbear’s idea is probably going to be the easiest, and I’m not sure there’s any reason you need to go complicated here. :)

I agree with @bunnylovesbear’s idea — cover the bottom with the leaves! Two birds, one stone.

I think they’ll look fantastic, no matter how you solve the gaping hole issue! Love them!
