An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.

Getting My Docs in a Row

January 18th, 2010 @ 5:10 pm by Mrs. Nachos

There’s quite a bit of stuff we need to prepare for our marriage license, and this week, it was like someone lit a fire under my arse. First off, I wanted to get a new copy of my birth certificate because the one I have looks like this…

So I went online and was going to order it and have it mailed to me until I went to checkout and the shipping was almost the same price as the certificate! $15 for the birth certificate + $12.45 for shipping = hellz no. It was worth the drive to get it, so I went to the courthouse after work and picked it up.

Birth certificate – check!

Next on my list was obtaining another certified copy of my divorce decree because we have to send that in with our application for our marriage license. I called up the courthouse (in a different county than where my birth certificate was, because that would have just been too easy). They said I could either pick it up (there was no way was I driving all the way up there!), or I could have it mailed. Apparently they charge per page and only take money orders or cashier’s checks, so I hit the bank, got a money order for $18.50, and mailed it off with a self-addressed stamped envelope and a letter explaining what I needed. It should be here next week.

Divorce decree – check!

Last on the list for the day was getting the application for our marriage license. Luckily it’s a free download online so I printed off a few copies just in case. You have to type it or make sure it’s written in extremely legible handwriting, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have a few in case we screw up!

Marriage license app – check!

So I think we’re set, aside from the money order that has to be sent with the paperwork, but we can do that when we get closer to sending everything. It’s such a relief to get things checked off of the to-do list!

Have you had any moments where you got up the energy to take care of a bunch of stuff you’ve been putting off? Was it a relief to get it all finished?

You are fortunate you could make a phone request for your divorce decree. The county where my divorce happened only accepts in person requests and that was in another state. So I had to pay a courier service to request the record and mail it to me.

Yay!! I love checking things off on my to-do list! Glad you’ve got all this sorted and ready to go - it would have sucked trying to do it all last minute! Now you have time to jump any bureaucratic hoops :)
