I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! Help a Guy Out…

January 18th, 2010 @ 2:32 pm by Mrs. Pencils

Sometimes my MOH/Brother Pencils (BOH) does things that truly shock the crap out of me and remind me how lucky I am to have him—in general and in our wedding.

Last December, BOH called to chat a while and catch up. I was berating him for not going down to Louisiana for the holidays with the rest of the family and he was taking it pretty well. I mean, I was bringing out my best sad, whiny voice that I thought would remind him of my fourteen-year-old self (and in return, his twenty-year-old self that wanted to drown me), but he was patient and sweet. He even said, “I know you’re giving me such a hard time because you’re going to miss me and you love me.”

WHA?!?! Who are you and what have you done with the boy who used to smother me with pillows, fart in my face, and disconnect the phone while I was on it?!?!

Oh right. That boy is gone and has been replaced with a “mature” twenty-eight-year-old BOH who is standing by my side next May. Nowadays, Brother Pencils and I truly do appreciate each other and even forgive each other for all those annoyances when we were growing up. (I think he forgives me for spraying Windex in his mouth… I’ll tell myself he has…)

The conversation began to wind down and then he sprung it on me: he told me he knows he doesn’t get to do a lot of the traditional things that a maid of honor will, and he doesn’t want to get me just any old wedding present. He wants to buy me my “something blue” for my wedding so that he can be a part of the big day in a meaningful way and I can honor this age old tradition with a bit of blue flair.

I. was. stunned. into silence. Which is pretty hard to do (ask Mr. Pencils). After a full thirty seconds I was able to eek out how absolutely much that meant to me, and of course I would be on the lookout for a nice blue ring or necklace or something that he can get for me.

Now the question becomes what? I already have my wedding jewelry (more on that to come) and I don’t think BOH wants to buy me a blue garter… I need ideas! Here’s what I’ve thought up so far:

This beautiful blue flower ring by Bejewelled Bespoke on Etsy:

or a beautiful charm like this by Etsy seller ksickle:

I like this because it has a tree, which is in line with the green and brown I’ll already be wearing. I could use this charm on a bracelet, on my bouquet, or hidden under my dress, tied to something.

Or I could add some blue spice to my hair (even though our colors are green, brown and yellow) with these gorgeous pins by hotpinkchick:

So, hive, what do you think? Do you like any of these? What are some other options for how my brother of honor can help me find something blue for our day?

I vote option 3. I love antiquey looking hair pieces. I like to think that someday if i have a daughter she might want to wear the hair pin I wore on my wedding day :)

What a sweet gesture on your brother’s part! What about blue shoes?? Also, what is his budget? Could you do something with a gemstone, like a blue topaz or aquamarine?

I just melted. And I want to set your BOH up with my friends now - is he single? What a sweet guy!

I, for one, love the ring, but a hankie would also be very sweet and sentimental and could become an heirloom and AH, how cute would that family story be?
