Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.

Wedding Shows I’d Like to See

January 18th, 2010 @ 1:21 pm by Ms Potato Chips

I watch wedding TV shows like I watch car wrecks. I watch them like I watch news about Lindsay Lohan’s little sister. I watch them like I watch Miley Cyrus’s inevitable descent into early adulthood and bad decisions. Like I watch Jon Gosselin to see when he’ll stop wearing Ed Hardy T-shirts. That is to say, I watch them with equal parts fascination, schadenfreude, and revulsion.

Enough with the normal-sized “bulging” brides and their ridiculous trainers! Enough with the platinum brides and their diamond-encrusted shoes! Enough with the ’zillas! Enough with the suggestion that a wedding needs to be a grand event, a show-stopper, dripping in uplighting and matching Vera-Wanged bridesmaids. Enough with the idea that there is One Right Way to plan a wedding or One Right Way to be a bride.

Here are the shows I’d actually like to watch. You listening, WeTV??

Someone send them a memo, stat.

1. Fatty Groom. Premise: Flabby groom and beer-bellied best man attempted to fit into that very-special tux. Certified-for-TV nutritionist and a personal trainer played by The Situation do a lot of yelling and push-ups in an attempt to scare groom straight and convince him that extra holiday weight and those late-night buffalo nachos = unlovable male-spinster (minster).

2. Say ‘Aye!’ to DIY. Follows moderately priced weddings with an emphasis on how to make things beautiful using some imagination and a glue gun. The equation: HGTV + Rich Bride, Poor Bride – any implication that wealth = happiness.

3. The Novel Wedding. Follows the planning and issues surrounding out-of-the-box and/or underrepresented couples: steampunk, goth, Renaissance, Pagan weddings… same sex, transgendered, interracial couples… courthouse weddings, backyard weddings, weddings in a bowling alley, weddings on a shoestring, weddings in outer space.

4. Plan PChipz’s Wedding. Camera crew hones in on burnt-out blogger. Non-pushy, non-fear-mongering planner takes over to plan her relaxed seaside soiree.

Which one do you think will make it big? What wedding shows would you like to see?

I totally agree, Chips! Those shows make me cringe and they’re often so stereotypical & sexist.

I would love to see Say ‘Aye!’ to DIY!!! your right they do place too much focus on how much money you do or don’t have and make you feel awful for not being able to afford the “platinum wedding” :-) two thumbs up to your show ideas they just made me crack up at work!

David Tutera irritates the heck out of me. Every time he gets that stunned look on his face when a bride wants to do something even remotely nontraditional, I just want to flick him on his ear until he starts bleeding.

ugh, I haaate David Tutera and that my fair wedding show totally bugs me! Its not that difficult to plan a gorgeous wedding for hundreds of thousands of dollars, so stop calling the brides trying to plan a wedding on a budget “tacky” or insulting their taste!

I am so glad you wrote about this. I was watching a ton of the Platinum shows yesterday and it made me feel….inadequate. I told myself we don’t drive convertible Bentleys and can’t afford $50k on flowers alone (or total for that matter!).

I am going to try to stay away from the tv…back away…very slowly…

Hahaha! Thank you for this post! I think watching the Situation teach a fatty groom to fist pump his way to tuxedo-ed fitness perfection would make my life complete.

@redherring: This made me LOL. He seems like a nice guy, but he’s really stuck in his ways…like how he is anti-nonmatching bridesmaid dresses. C’mon, Tutera, get with the times!
@katiebelle: I know. Someone should really make that happen.
