Dress Flowers

January 20th, 2010 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Alright, time to experiment with dress flowers!

The first attempt was from a book I have called Kokoro No Te, but it’s a little too pointy…

Dress Flowers : wedding accessories diy wedding dress Star The book example used a lighter fabric, and was only a few inches tall. This one is, well, nearly a foot and made with canvas!

Next I went online to look at different DIY flowers, and walked away with a ton of tutorials:

I went with the rosette for now, since it seemed like a good match for the bumpy skirt.

Ta da!

I did cheat a little though. Instead of sewing all the petals and beads together, I used hot glue! Gotta love the easy-way out!

Now to see how they look:

Dress Flowers : wedding accessories diy wedding dress Fronts The giant star, with an impromptu shoulder strap put in. Mr. Sewing likes this one, he thinks it’s “statement making”. It is indeed!

And now the flower with the strap!

And the flower without a strap!

Finally, the back flowers!

The skirt is getting pretty wrinkly at this point. That’s the problem with canvas I guess! Ribbons or beads hanging down, perhaps? Any other ideas?

I think I’ll have to go back and make a few more rosettes if I go with the flower at the top. I think one by itself is a little lonely. Maybe a few different sizes bunched together in a cluster?

Will you be utilizing any fabric flowers on your wedding day? How so?

Nice! It looks really good with the strap and probably doesn’t need more rosettes, but without I definitely think you’ll want to bunch them together (you’re right; it does look a little lonely!).

I like the rosette with the strap! You’re right, though, a few smaller ones added would look nice too.

I’m so impressed with your dress making skills and your dress making fiance! That’s pretty awesome. :)

I really like it with the strap / rosette combo. It looks beautiful! And I love the rosettes along the bottom of the bodice. :)

love the rosettes and strap. it would look better with more bunched together… going up the strap perhaps? not a big fan of the ones along the bottom though.

I actually like the three flowers at the back of the dress. And probably with a simple strap…

Ooh, I like the rosette with the strap too! Or if no strap, then a bunch of smaller rosettes would be cute :)

love love love the shoulder strap! i agree that you might need more than one flower — she does look a bit lonely.

I like the “statement making” one with the strap — very chic!! You guys are a very impressive sewing team, altering patterns is HARD WORK!

My mom and I made my wedding dress — I was anti-shine, and all about cotton, but my mom talked me into trying a dupioni silk (<$150 for 10 yards with a JoAnn’s coupon). It was perfect — not at all shiny, VERY light weight, it had a beautiful drape, and I was cool and comfy on a humid August day. We did line the silk with a pima cotton — why they don’t do that will all wedding dresses, who knows, but it felt sooo good!!
