Dress Mock-Up: Skirt

January 20th, 2010 @ 11:00 am by Mrs. Sewing

The fun part of the dress: the pick-ups! I just love the poofy-froofiness of a big skirt (though trust me, canvas isn’t the froofiest of materials).

Here she is, in a variety of different angles:

and my personal favorite…

One interesting thing is - Mr. Sewing has not only seen me in my dress, he helped make it. A big breach of tradition? Sure, but I think it’s totally worth it. When I walk down the aisle, it’ll be in something we both made. Together. Like a baby, but not. Weird? Okay, I’ll stop.

And happily, the Sewing-family, initially skeptical of whether we could pull it off or not, has now pledged their full support and excitement after seeing we could at least finish the bottom! Their approval was pretty important to me, but I was most overjoyed to get the blessing of my maternal grandmother (Paw Paw, as we call her in Chinese). She made her own dress back in the day, so the bar is set pretty high for me!

I think it’s a great break in tradition for you guys - this will mean even more than the surprise dress (I am pretty sure my fiance is going to be like, oh, she’s wearing a white dress, and not think too much about it!)

I am still absolutely stunned by this dress. I can’t even figure out how to sew on a button. Beautiful.

You guys have done an absolutely amazing job with your dress! I am just stunned that something so gorgeous can come from those flimsy ancient patterns.

I can’t even tell you how impressed I am. I got a sewing machine for Christmas and I can sew, but for some reason having my own makes me a little intimidated! Your dress is amazing!

@Gilneas: haha. Yay, i pretty much do actually. It’s totally beat up at this point :P
@Miss Pug: Since there’s multiple layers, we “picked up” the top layers (which were longer than the other layers), bunched it a bit, and tacked it to the bottom layers. :)

“Like a baby, but not. Weird?” too funny! I agree your Grandma is soooo adorable and I am totally jealous that Mr Sewing is helping to make your dress! I wish either of us had a sewing bone in our body.
