Mrs. Pudding, Greater Toronto Area/Vermont Age and Occupation: 26, High School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Computer Engineer Engagement Date: August 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Ceremony, Cultural Hall Reception About Me: Quite literally a citizen of the world, I was born in Poland, grew up in Canada, and now live in the beautiful state of Vermont. I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.

Just You Try to Shut Me Up

January 20th, 2010 @ 12:44 pm by Mrs. Pudding

It seems like once the six-months-til-the-wedding date passes, everyone starts to get real serious about planning. I (the bride) have been serious about planning for over a year now, but everyone else (including the groom) have shrugged me off until this point. Now everyone is freaking out, and I am the only calm one - since half of what they are freaking out about I’ve already planned for. :P

Anyway, I have recently been receiving quite a few requests to speak (or give a toast) at the wedding. Our dads will both be speaking to welcome guests (and the new addition to the family), Sister Pudding/MOH will speak, as will BIL/BM. It is customary at Polish weddings for the godmothers and godfathers to speak, and although I am unsure if they will, I will certainly give them the option. I have recently decided that I would like Mama Pudding to say something as well (even though she says that she will be too emotional), and of course, Mr. P will do the customary groom’s toast.

That’s a lot of talking, but I don’t care. I figure that every single person that is invited is either family or a close friend, and will want to hear nice (and embarrassing) things said about us.

But there will also be one very, very special, very nontraditional speaker at our wedding…

ME!

I know that Emily Post would probably frown on this, but I just can’t imagine not getting a chance to express my joy on such a special day. Plus, I’m a huge microphone hog, and I love the sound of my own voice. Seriously. I’ve served as the M.C. at many a wedding/cultural event. Just look at me hamming it up:

Oh yah, I’m loving every minute of that. Just you try to shut me up at my own wedding!

Are there any other brides ditching tradition and planning to give a speech or toast at their wedding?

Me!!!! I am not a big fan of microphone. But I just feel… there is something romantic about giving a speech on my own wedding.

I’m giving a speach as well. In Denmark it is not required but not unusual either. I look so much forward to it actually - I’m about to hit the 6 months mark and has allready begun writing it! Squeel! I’m afraid that it’s gonna be very emotional, though.

Mr. Library and I are sharing the welcome toast as he’s not always comfortable with big crowds and I teach for a living. Sounds great to me!

I’m not sure about the wedding itself, but I know I’ll be saying something at our rehearsal dinner. FI isn’t that great at public speaking whereas I was a communications major and have a lot of experience in front of people. We’re really trying to keep the speeches to a minimum because we want there to be as much time as possible to dance.

Ps, I almost bought that dress you’re wearing but in hot pink. Super cute!!

I have never heard a bride speak at her own wedding before! I’ve heard the groom speak and it’s usually very awkward as he is too overwhelmed with emotion. My only advice is to space out the speeches so people actually get to eat, sounds like a lot of people will have the mic!

I think that’s awesome! I probably won’t be saying anything, ’cause my FI is a total microphone hog. What can I say, we were both big theater nerds in high school - we’re total hams!

I’m definitely starting to toy with the idea of speaking at our wedding. I have some things that I want to say - now I just need to work up the nerve! Kudos to you!

I think it’s awesome that you’re going to speak at your own wedding. Why not? Also, I love that gown on you. :)

haha! do it! I think Mr. P and I will speak at our rehearsal dinner but prolly not the wedding itself. though, I too love a good microphone, so I may need to rethink that :)

Nice! Neither Mr. S nor I want to speak… I don’t know what I would say that wouldn’t leave me a blubbering mess, and Mr. S hates public speaking (and has requested increasingly short vows to accommodate him ;) ). Go you!

i love it! i think toasts are really nice, especially from the bride. i feel like, besides the ceremony, the bride is pretty hush, so it’s good to speak up!

I planned on giving a speech along with the Dude thanking everyone for being there, but I got too nervous! In the end, I made the announcement for the after-party, so I guess that counts for something?

@scphan: I agree! Kind of like shouting your love from the roof top!

@Danish_Student: I do this weird thing where I compose single sentences or thoughts in my head. I have no idea what the overall speech will be, but I am collecting these ideas in my head!

@Ms. Library: I always say that part of the reason that I became a teacher was because people would have to sit there and listen to me :P

Aww great idea. And I am sure your speech will be about your love for your fam and friends. They won’t shut you down for that!

@EAQ219: Our reception is 5:30pm - 2:00am…I feel like that leaves a lot of time for dancing, but I could see how having a shorter reception would influence your decision. And that dress is one of my favourites - it’s my go to dress for any formal occasion!

@moderndaisy: I have no problem if people are eating while the speeches are given…is that weird?

@amanda.lynn: Hahah….don’t let him steal all of the spotlight!

@gill84: It’s such a good moment to thank your family for what they have done for you…I don’t think that I can think of a better time than a wedding

@Miss French Fries: Thanks!

@Miss Pug: It’s true! It’s kind of like, once you get married, you no longer have anything to say because your husband speaks for you!

@Mrs. Mouse: I can imagine the moment being scary…I hope that I can gather up the courage!

That’s great! I love it when the bride or groom does a speech, as it’s usually very heartfelt (and everyone there knows who it is that’s speaking!). But I probably won’t do it since I’m public-speaking-phobic!

We entered the reception together and I took the mic from our Best Man and welcomed everyone/thanked them for coming. I had day dreamed about telling all these wonderful people how special they are to me and how happy I am that they came, but in the end, I did that in as few words as possible because I could tell I was a little too emotional to be up there long!

There will definitely be at least once when I will rock the mic - and I don’t mean singing! LOL! Mr. CW and I haven’t discussed that yet, but I would DEFINITELY say I’m the better public speaker! I say go for it, Pudding!
