About Mrs. Cheeseburger

Scratch That, Reverse It…

January 20th, 2010 @ 3:35 pm by Mrs. Cheeseburger

So, being engaged for 20 months gives you a ton of time to come up with ideas for your wedding. You collect your inspiration, do the research, sometimes you even buy the materials for projects… but you know what they say about the best laid plans.

Now that we’re officially 10 weeks out (eeeeek!), it’s time to start cutting things that I know are not going to happen. I’ve even written about some of these things! Since blogging is all about being honest, it’s time for this Cheeseburger to come clean.

Things that are officially OFF my to-do list, and why:

  • Lighting - yeah, that’s right. I reeeeaally wanted uplighting. Still do, in fact. But the only vendor in town really let me down at our recent meeting. Their gel selection was lacking, they were really unorganized, and actually a little rude. Plus, once I got to the ballroom and saw that the remodel was in full effect, I was so in love with the new creamy, ivory walls that I couldn’t bear to change them (given the circumstances).
  • Custom water bottle labels - I thought these would be great during the cocktail hour or in the OOT Boxes. In reality, they probably would be! But I just don’t see it happening - my 10 year old printer is barely hanging on as it is. I even bought a bunch of waterproof printable adhesive paper about 9 months ago - anyone want it?

  • DIY Menus - I fell in love with Mrs. Bell Pepper’s round menus a long time ago. I even bought round card stock to make them. But, we’re not having chargers, and I just found out from our venue that there are no plates at the place settings before dinner is served. Whoops! Luckily, I have a plan for the round card stock, so they’re not going to waste!
  • Chivari Chairs - sigh. This one took months for me to let go of. But a lot of the comments on my prior post helped me make the decision, not to mention the fact that our venue booked another event in the only available room left (i.e. the room they would store the ballroom chairs in when we brought in the Chivaris). So, the decision was partially made for me. Oh well.
  • Fan Programs - a labor of love for those who make these indeed. After a few trials, even though I loved the look, we decided to go with a slightly more straightforward (though still majorly involved) program idea.
  • DIY Bridal Clutch - yeaaaaaaah, notsomuch. After making 9 purses for my maids, I was pretty much done with that. I can’t even bring myself to do a tutorial, because that will require me to make another one (sorry about that, by the way)! I went the BIY route… you’ll see her soon enough!

I’m sure a few more things will be added to this list in the upcoming weeks.

Did any of your wedding planning ideas start with the best intentions and then get ditched along the way?

Um, I’ll take the paper! I fall into the same boat as you with a total of 27 months of engagement, so I know how that goes. I think I might be doing the BIY route on a couple projects.

good for you for making a decision that will save your sanity. it’s kinda hard to let go, but ultimately, this sounds like the best thing. i’m sorry the lighting vendor sucked, though.

Yes absolutely. I think it’s a pretty natural part of planning to have a come to jesus moment like that and realize not everything is going to happen.

What about using the menus as chargers? I saw it in MSW for Cheree Berry’s wedding. Thought it was a cool idea!

Do you remember where you bought your adhesive waterproof paper? This is still on my DIY to-do list!

Uhmmm…yeah. I have about a million projects that I wanted to do, and they just aren’t going to get done (money, time, etc.). I know what you mean. Your wedding will be beautiful…and just keep telling yourself that nobody will notice if things are “missing”. :)

I’ve had to knock a few things off the list, too… sometimes, it just can’t be helped!

My 16 month engagement sounded like SUCH a longtime….but dragging my feet for the first 8 months means more scrambling and cutting of ideas will have to happen. So worth it to save your sanity, so congrats on “letting go!”

(If you still have that adhesive paper, let me know….my mother is obsessed with the water bottle idea so she’ll be dih-ing it…doing-it-herself!)

3 months out and I’ve knocked favors off to to-do list. I just didn’t have it in me to make them from scratch and I didn’t want to do another tasting. Sigh. I’m thinking menus and programs are the next items to go unless one of my fab bridesmaids (with a working printer) takes pity on me.

Good call to save your sanity! Better to cut projects now than have a tired stressed out bride on wedding day :) Besides, no one will go to your wedding and say “It was beautiful but honestly, they didn’t have custom water bottle labels so it all went to waste” I think you made wise cuts! :D

I will take the paper!! I really want to do the water bottles (hopefully that plan doesn’t end up like yours).

I know I’ll have to take some things off my list, but I’m hoping that I don’t!

oooh, i’ll take the paper if there’s any left of it! it’s one of the things on my list of “maybes”

and yeah i too have added projects and then crossed them of my list over and over again… which is how i ended up with a “maybe” section of the to do list, lol.

biy? is that buy it yourself? i like that!

but as a diy-er it’s important to know when to cut your losses. your sanity is worth way more than those additional touches

I second tea on the sanity comment!! I gave up on a few projects and decided to BIY just like you. Also I am having the same revalation about the Chiv Ballroom chairs, so expensive and nowhere to put the others. Chair covers here I come!!

I should have given up on my DIY fan programs–man, what a PITA. It feels really good to let go sometimes, doesn’t it?

I’m at the chop stage too. They all sound like great ideas but at some point you just have to say no. Sounds like you made good decisions, though I know it was hard.
