About Mrs. Scissors

Veil Veil Veil Veil Veil!

January 20th, 2010 @ 1:47 pm by Mrs. Scissors

I’ve known since the very beginning what I want in a veil. I knew what I wanted for a veil before I even had any CLUE about what I was doing for a dress!

For my ultimate veil-inspiration, keep reading after the jump! If you are my lovely and handsome fiancé, you can’t keep reading after the jump. This’ll have to be a surprise.

OK, he’s gone!

This, this, this lovely image from Our Labor of Love contains my idea of the ultimate veil.

Veil Veil Veil Veil Veil! : wedding veil Our2bl our2Bl

Long, plain, swishy, and magical. I don’t know what came first, the want of a long veil or this photo, but it doesn’t matter. I still get butterflies in my throat just looking at it. I want THAT. That right there. I want to get a metallic Sharpie and draw hearts all over the picture. “I <3 veil.” “SCIZ + VEIL = BFFs 4 LYFE.”

OK, point made. So, here’s my deal. A few months ago, I went to visit my dress in the showroom at the bridal salon. For those of you that haven’t seen my dress, here it be:

Veil Veil Veil Veil Veil! : wedding veil Thedres01 thedres01

After visiting my dress, we went into the veil room to play around. I found a few long veils, and they were fairly plain, but there really wasn’t much to them. A few hundred dollars for tulle attached to a hair comb? It seems ridiculous. It may seem cheap (or ignorant) for me to say that, but it just doesn’t make any sense. I thought, “Oh! I can probably make that!” (This is coming from a girl who was told by a teacher in the 4th grade never to pick up a needle and thread again. I obeyed.)

I mentioned my hair-brained idea to a few people, all of whom gave me the shifty-eyed “Yeeeeaaahhhhmmm…” face/noise. I began to lose hope in being able to DIY this long, plain, magical veil.

Then, suddenly, my hope for a DIY veil was restored! While looking through my Google Reader for “long veil”, I found a post by Heather of we met in a bar. She was a DIY veil bride!

Veil Veil Veil Veil Veil! : wedding veil Picture0253 Picture 29

Her mother made hers for $40, complete with a blusher! I’m back in the game! Now I just need to get a bolt of tulle, a hair comby thing, and then puppy-dog-eye a friend or family member with a sewing machine. Good plan.

Did you have some crazy-clear ideas about certain aspects of your wedding that you were determined to DIY? Anybody else a DIY veil-er with delicious tips for me? Is this an awesome idea or a pretty bad idea?

Awesome! I’m a DIY veil bride too. I figure if I don’t have ribbon, sparkly things or anything else to add to it, how hard can attaching some tulle to a comb be?
I may find out it’s a lot harder than I’m imagining, but I hope not. And I bought a veil on ebay for $20 that I just need to chop down from chapel to fingertip length.
@Scissors - check out ebay to see if it’s cheaper to make or buy one from the site.

One word Esty. I got my plain veil made by Simplebeautyveils for around $40. Mine was waist length. She does longer veils and will do custom length. I think Cathredral was only around a $100.

Beautiful! I ended up getting my veil made by Occansey Designs (amazing) because I couldn’t imagine paying bridal salon prices. I can’t wait to see yours!

I’m a DIY veil bride, and I JUST FINISHED IT!! So excited about that.

I wanted a veil similar to yours - a cathedral length veil. But I wanted one with a cascade/oval/waterfall cut where the veil, instead of falling straight back, falls in gentle waves framing the face and body. Also, the veil was to be a drop veil (no comb, attaches w/ bobby pins or a hat pin at whatever length you want, but lays flat on your head). I added 2mm satin rattail cord to the edge of the veil, stiching by hand.

I will tell you, I had the HARDEST time finding material that was wide enough. Even with a modified oval cut, the tulle must be nearly as wide as it is long to achieve the desired effect. Most fabric comes in 45″ widths, and I needed something closer to 70.” I ended up purchasing a plain drop veil from a bride on preownedweddingdresses.com, and the cord from JoAnne fabrics. I ended up using approximately 25 yards of cording.

I’m e-baying the hell out of my veil. I thought about making it, but then I saw a plain cathedral length veil for around $20 on e-bay from a seller with great reviews and a money back guarantee, score!

Oooh! good luck =) That veil inspiration is fantastical.

I e-bayed mine, but I KNEW that when it came to DIY, I HAD HAD HAD to do my centerpieces, so I know the feeling.

IF I have a veil, I will 100% make my own. I just can’t see spending that much on something I can do myself.

I’m lucky, one of my (super duper ridiculously fabulous) bridesmaids has a mom who sews and is making my veil for me. Now I just have to remember to go let them measure my head ;)

I’m going to attempt to make my veil too!! Except I kinda wanted that embroidered/serged edging and I don’t think I can do that myself so may have to settle for a plain raw edge. Can’t wait to see your veil with your dress!

I bought a veil along with my dress. I wish I would have attempted DIY or at least Etsy. I bet yours will turn out great! Also, that veil pic=beautiful.
