Mrs. Nachos, Chicago/St. Thomas Age and Occupation: 33, Commercial Real Estate & Hairstylist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Radio Producer Engagement Date: May 22, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. Thomas About Me: I'm a happy, laid back city girl that can find the silver lining in any situation. An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.
About Mrs. Nachos

Finally, Homework I Enjoy!

January 21st, 2010 @ 5:54 pm by Mrs. Nachos

As a destination bride-to-be, I’ve tried to learn all I can about St. Thomas so I won’t get off the plane and wonder what the heck I’m supposed to do for the next 2 weeks. Granted, we booked an all-inclusive trip, but I still want to explore! I’ve bookmarked so many things on my computer and check a few of them almost daily.

First up, the St. Thomas Source

Finally, Homework I Enjoy! : wedding venues 11 1

I love seeing the weather in the top right-hand corner every morning as I’m sipping my coffee under a blanket trying not to think about the snow I have to scrape off my car.

Next up, I found a blog that I love following…

Finally, Homework I Enjoy! : wedding venues 21 2

It’s written by a husband and wife team who moved there after taking a few trips and falling in love with St. Thomas. They write about restaurants that they visit, new things they’ve discovered about making life easier there, upcoming events and entertainment, etc. And they have a great sense of humor that I love.

I’ve also bookmarked a bunch of places to possibly go, including the Skyride to Paradise Point

Those cars take you up to the top of a mountain where you’ll find a bar and live entertainment. I definitely want to check that one out! A potential spot for an after ceremony party, perhaps?

I’ve found a few coupon books that I plan to print out before we go…

Finally, Homework I Enjoy! : wedding venues 41 4

(source)

Also, I found the USVI tourist website that is FULL of info on everything from maps to places to go to wedding vendors, etc…

Finally, Homework I Enjoy! : wedding venues 51 5

And the ever-important Virgin Islands event calendar that first made me aware of Carnival…

Finally, Homework I Enjoy! : wedding venues 61 6

You name it, I’ve found it! I’ve learned so much from all the online sources and I’m very happy knowing that I’m not totally going in blind.

If you are planning a wedding away from home, have you done a ton of research to learn as much as you can about the area?

Hi Nachos!
It looks like you’ve definitely done your homework! I just wanted to send you a note to let you know that as a fellow Chicago (hi from lincoln park!) that I grew up part-time in St. Thomas and if you need any recommendations whatsoever (restaurants, beaches, activities, shopping, etc) please let me know!

How exciting! You totally sound like me - I always want to know as much as humanely possible about places before I travel!

We did a day sail on “High Pockets” last February and it was wonderful, I believe we left out of Red Hook. Six people max, you are treated like royalty (the lunch was yummy and I got champagne for my b-day), and it was a lot of fun going to hidden snorkle spots….I’d also recommend a day trip to the BVI’s (Virgin Gorda, The Baths, amazing)…in case you needed other things to do.

I am a destination bride-to-be at an all-inclusive resort in Cozumel. I have a whole folder in my bookmarks dedicated to Cozumel research. I even created a spreadsheet listing the different things to do on the island and prices. I am thinking of creating a “timeline” like Miss Cheeseburger posted a few weeks ago, except I don’t want it to be a timeline because I don’t want to tell people what they should do, I just want to give them options! I am happy to hear I am not the only one like this! : )

I’m going to the Florida Keys at the end of February, and have been totally stalking the weather there :P

I’m sure that the sun will be out in full force, and the breeze will be nice and cool on your wedding day!

We went to St Thomas for our honeymoon and we LOVED it! You can see my recaps on my blog here: http://august15bride.blogspot.com/2009/09/our-island-adventure-part-one.html

Oh and we rode on those Skycars. My advice - don’t ride them in windy weather! SCARY!

I am just beginning to research honeymoon destinations. I find that a basic google search for something like “puerta vallerta” brings up wayyyy too much stuff and I have trouble beginning. Is there a particular search tip you may have for how you found all of this useful info on St. Thomas?

@emmerzwithcheese: Honestly, I just kinda did the same thing as you and bookmarked the sites I liked or found useful along the way. There is a lot of junk out there, I just weeded through and found the good ones. Maybe start with Puerta Vallerta’s tourist website, they should have lots of good legit links on there to explore.

I think you were incredibly smart to do this much research - I, myself, am a major planner and this is exactly what I would have done! I think you’ve done an amazing job of finding a way to be the best “host of a place you’re not from!” :)

It looks like you’re set, but another fun site to check out is whatsonwhen.com
I was in europe for a couple of years and found some really cool local events and festivals there that weren’t listed anywhere else (including a swiss festival in a tiny town where every window in every house was lit up by carved turnips and they handed out free cider; and also a place where you can go and milk goats in Ireland is you so desire!). A really fun site.
