I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!

Font Trial

January 21st, 2010 @ 4:50 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Well, Mr. Sewing and I spent a whole evening wasted on this amazingly addictive site! I’d recommend every couple make at least one date night for exploring fonts, it’s quite fun. Just try not to start any wars over the pros and cons of serifs. It’s not pretty.

Anyway, our task was to come up with two things -

  1. A “theme” Bible verse, or at least something to put on our favor bags.
  2. A font to go with it.

For challenge one, there are many options - 1 Corinthians, Ecclesiastes, etc. We chose 1 John 4:9-12. Not only is it an awesome and to the point, but it also happens to be the subject of our latest Church Bible Study, which focuses on the book of 1 John. Here it is (NIV version):

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

The outside of the bag will simply have the mon on it, in either red or white ink.

The inside edge will have the text. For challenge two, here are some font samples we came up with:

Font Trial : wedding stationery Bagfont

(In order from top to bottom, the fancy fonts are JBFil_std, Kawoszeh, Romance Fatal Serif, and Times Old Attic. The plain font is Century Gothic.)

Personally I’m leaning towards #3 with the Rebel Alliance sign in the middle. Pucca and Garu I think are just too small.

What’s your favorite font? Are you using the same one for all written things, or are you mixing it up with several of your favorites?

What a beautiful verse — so nice to see your plans take shape centered around your Christian faith.

Haha, serif fonts FTW! No for real, I read somewhere that serif fonts are easier for people to read. I’m always changing the default font on my work email and in Word to Times New Roman from a sans-serif font.

Love that you are incorporating a Bible verse. We are very strong in our faith and it almost makes me ashamed that I did not even think of that throughout the wedding process.

haha I’m early enough in wedding planning that I can’t possibly imagine why anyone would care about what font something is in.

Of course 6 months ago i couldn’t imagine why anyone would care about what chairs looked like at a venue and now i weep for chivari (and my lack of ability to buy them)… heh. I think this post is a sign of things to come for me.

The first font is wicked cool, but I like the third for this situation. (Although the first one is so much fun.)

Please don’t tell Mr. KM about that site. I’ll never see him again and that would make me sad. Seriously, he’s laid claim to approving any and all fonts related to our wedding. Seriously.

Great verse, and I love #3!
PS - Slightly unrelated, but did you realize Forever 21 has John 3:16 on the bottom of their bags?

@Mrs. Mouse: Really? That’s pretty awesome. I’m the serif fan in the house, but Mr. Sew is the minimalist!
@CorgiTales: The font-bug will get you! It’s just a matter of time!
@Riesling: Yay! It’s so much fun!
@jaybird12: I know! I really liked the stringy-ness of the first one.
@mimi06d: Aren’t they? Sooo cute!
@KMSull: haha! Good luck keeping him out of the sea of internet fonts!
@lauralou852: whoa, I had no idea! That’s pretty awesome! I’ll have to check next time :)

I definitely like the third one the best, simple but elegant. It took me so long to figure out what fonts to use, I had a list that I was making as I found ones I liked. Who knew fonts would be such a pain in the booty!
