About Mrs. Scissors

Play ‘em off, Keyboard Cat.

January 21st, 2010 @ 12:30 pm by Mrs. Scissors

I’ve been stalling on this whole “finding the bridesmaids a dress” thing. We know that I sort of fell in like/love with some J.Crew bridesmaids’ dresses, but sadly, those are not meant to be. There was a chance that those dresses would not fit my darling ladies to the best of their abilities, so I scratched the J.Crew dresses off the list.

Rather than continuing to obsess over dresses online, I decided [and by I decided, I mean "thankfully was harassed"] into making an appointment with a local shop to look at dresses in person. With an appointment scheduled, off I went to Bella Bridesmaid to check out dresses with my trusty mother and one of my bridesmaids, Scissormaid J.

In about 2.2 seconds, I was so totally confused. I felt like ultimate fail bride 2k10. At this particular shop, brides with a mission, brides with cojones, brides with a plan, those brides… those brides must be their primary clientele.

“Um, I have an appointment? At 2? To look at bridesmaids dresses?” Real smooth, considering that I was in a store that only sold bridesmaids dresses.

“Great! What are you looking for? What color? Shape?”

I began my terrible, awful, hard-to-decipher run-on sentence spiel, “Well, I don’t want to be a mean bride, and I’m trying to make everyone happy, even though I’ve been dragging my feet about this. See, originally I wanted short black dresses, and then I got afraid that they’d be too harsh with my dress and our flowers and bright colors… oh yes, did I say that we were having sort-of a technicolor wedding? Yes, well, oh, ok, then I thought that maybe we’d do light gray dresses, but then I was afraid that they’d wash them out, or they wouldn’t like them, and then I didn’t know what to do. I started thinking each in a different bright color, but then I thought that might be too much, so, I think I need maybe a neutral-ish color? Or something? Oh yeah, and here’s a picture of my dress.” I shoved a photo of my dress into her general direction, totally horrified with my blabbering, and feeling like a complete moron.

“OK, well we can just look around a little bit. How about that?” So, well, we did. Thankfully she was sweet and very patient, and we ended up with one that looked like it might be a major win in my hunt for a great dress.

personal photo of the actual dress

The Melissa Sweet dress is just a fabulous color, and looked like it would be flattering for different body shapes. According to the attendant, this dress was designed by Sara Blakely, the creator of Spanx, which makes sense given its awesomeness, figure-wise. The only downside to this dress was the fact that it was $248, which seemed on the high side for a little tank dress, making it not so big of a contender.

In true Scissor-fashion, I almost gave up and crawled back into my hidey-hole, but decided to look around the shop one more time, and that is when I found what might be the most epic of bridesmaids’ dresses.

Who else has acted like a complete spaz in the face of picking out bridesmaids dresses? Were you wishy-washy like I was, or did you know exactly what you wanted?

Please share. Soon.

Seems as though we have similar tastes in bridesmaid dresses (same color too) and I’ve been failing miserably at finding one.

What is it about this process that makes me want to run away and hide?

Also, seems as though you have luck with the 2nd glance around the store sweep through :)

Excited to see what you finally found.

I will say that the Melissa Sweet dress while lovely would probably not be good for the larger chested ladies among us. And as I am both larger chested, and well, not a stick figure I could guarantee that the dress would allow for a bit much on the cleavage front while simultaneously making me look pregnant. HOT.

So, yay! different dress! I will say that I LOVE that color. Gorgeous.

I was mildly spazzy with the bm dresses… I certainly thought about them a lot more than my own dress!

Love keyboard cat. Makes this post that much more awesome.
I was SO dreading looking for bridesmaid dresses…I didn’t know anything about them and the whole experience seemed like it was going to be terrible.

I sucked it up, went to DB and spent like an hour trying dresses on. We found two that we loved and then got opinions from the rest of the girls. So totally easy peasy and not a scary mess like I thought it would be.

Can’t wait to see what you decided on! I hope you don’t make me rethink my BM dress decisions!

I love that dress, but do you have any big busted girls? I love the dress, but just thinking about myself personally, I seriously doubt my boobies would fit in that top without a hell of a lot of cleavage action. Unless of course you’re cool with the cleavage action ;)

If that dress is a fail, I can’t wait to see what you end up choosing. I’m sure it will rock!

The Melissa Sweet is so pretty! I’d definitely be excited to wear it as a bridesmaid (but not excited about the price). I can’t wait to see this epic bridesmaid dress!

@cfitz621: I’ve (essentially) decided, and it’s still like pulling teeth. :p Yeah, I tend to have good luck the second time around. I also have a pattern of thinking the world is going to end, but then things going fairly smoothly. Neuroses FTW.
@tinab1181: Yeah, pretty much what I was thinking. It wouldn’t be a friend to boobs.
@Miss French Fries: Not looking forward to wrangling them all together. I’m so bad at people managing.
@Miss Pug: I’m pretty smooth.
@Miss Rainbow: Yeah, I think with anything over a b-cup would turn into boobs galorez.
@LovestheBear: It’s not really a fail, per se. I just got knocked away by the second one. :)

I got so distracted by Keyboard Cat… then noticed the pretty dresses too :)
I looooove Keyboard Cat, somehow I am sneaking his music into our wedding… maybe cake cutting? Also we are planning on Rick-Rolling our guests! Mooo-hooo-hooo-haaaa-haaa-haaa (not that all of them will get it, but mad props to those that do).
