About Mrs. Hamster

Hello, and welcome to Battle 2 between Hamster and Invitations. When we had last met, the paper was whupping major Hamster butt. Not to let some Lettra paper get the best of me, I set aside this entire past weekend to work on Goccoing these babies up. I had our invitation design printed, photocopied, and ready to go. I dusted off the rarely used and much feared Gocco, only to hit my first roadblock:

The One Where Hamster Cries (Hamster: 0, Invitations: 2) : wedding diy invitations stationery Goccofa goccofa

I had foolishly assumed that the entire Gocco screen could be printed on, but only a 4.5 x 6 in area was usable (for my Gocco, at least!). I could, in theory, have just played with the spacing on my oh-so-advanced Microsoft Word creation, but I don’t have a printer at home! Cue the Hamster tears.

The One Where Hamster Cries (Hamster: 0, Invitations: 2) : wedding diy invitations stationery Goccofa01 goccofa01

However, my creativity kicked in, and I fixed the space issue with some DIY cutting and pasting. I like to think of this as a subset of DIY, called UYOM (Undoing Your Own Mistake).

Okay. Now I was ready. I had my cut-and-pasted invitation mockup. I ironed the design at the advice of Miss Pug. I remembered to use that blue film thingy that I had no use for when I Gocco’ed my save the dates. I even remembered to put the batteries into my Gocco - I was a pro!

With an emotion somewhere between trepidation and enthusiasm, I nervously printed my first invite. On scrap paper of course. The result? Not good.

The One Where Hamster Cries (Hamster: 0, Invitations: 2) : wedding diy invitations stationery Goccofa02 goccofa02

Okay, so our names *did* print, I just Photoshopped them out of the picture. But see that line running through the word “Mr.”? That was fo’ reals. Have a closer look.

The One Where Hamster Cries (Hamster: 0, Invitations: 2) : wedding diy invitations stationery Goccofa03 goccofa03

See? Not pretty. And the word “HE” up there? That’s supposed to be “THE”.

The One Where Hamster Cries (Hamster: 0, Invitations: 2) : wedding diy invitations stationery Goccofa04 goccofa04

My beloved monogram, created so painstakingly in… er… Microsoft Word, didn’t fare so well either.

So I tried re-inking, de-inking, printing on the Lettra paper, printing on Notebook paper, having my cat press the Gocco down with me (I really had hopes for that one) - but… a whole lotta nothing. Where nothing = crappy invitation printouts. At this point I was crying big ol’ frustrated Hamster tears.

So, readers, what was the outcome? Much as I had hid the Lettra paper in my closet, the still-inked Gocco screen is hiding in my freezer while I decide its fate (who are we kidding, it’s deciding MY fate). Shall I give it another try? Should I look for a printer who might be able to do this, if I provide the paper? Questions to ponder.

What did I get out of this? Some hopefully helpful tips for you, the fellow DIY-wannabee.

  1. Make sure you don’t make you design outside the printable range of your Gocco. In my Gocco’s case, the boundaries were that gray squishy pad thing. Outside of that border - no printie.
  2. Get a lot of scrap paper. A lot. You WILL need it.
  3. It’s okay to cry. And try to employ your pet as labor. It may not work. But, it’s okay.

Stay tuned while I plan my next move….

Any other DIY fails out there?

I had the same issues with my Gocco! I was ready to turn around and sell it the first week… However, I finally found solutions!
1. I print on my home HP printer
2. Print on cardstock, not printer paper
3. I do not use the blue screen

After I changed those things my Gocco is super clear! Good Luck!

Oh noes! Poor Hamster! I did our whole invitations on Word too…. I tried the various Adobe programs and gave up. Word is my homie, so I stuck with it.

I had a horrible first Gocco experience too and was ready to throw it against a wall and re-sell it! I realized that there wasn’t enough carbon on my copies and (while it worked for Miss Pug) the ironing didn’t work for me. $30 later (because I needed more bulbs) I got the result I was looking for…but yeah…Gocco and I fought for about a week before I went back to it!

okay, i’m feeling a little sheepish about this since it was my tip, but perhaps you’re ironing too much of the carbon off? you could try running the iron over the tracing paper just once.

although there’s gotta be something else going on with that line, since it seems to be going all the way up and down…lemme think about it…

Have you tried using a laser printer? I used that and the details/words of my invites came out perfectly.

Awww, I’m sorry Hamster! I have no advice for you since I’ve never even seen a Gocco in real life, let alone used one, but I am confident you will prevail!

I like the idea of using a Gocco (if I could find one!) but I’ll probably stick with just printing invites off my computer… the printer and I are friends!

I did several gocco invitations in the pass with some clients and also a friend. Let me give you some tips - Do you have a friend who has photoshop or illustrator that can help you put all your info on Adobe editing software? Because these programs can give you a great outcome. The resolution dpi for the image should be set to 100 or 200 dpi and for the text I normally set it up at 600 dpi and a laser jet printer will greatly help you expose on the screen much much better and I had no problem when screen printing all inks comes smoothly on the card. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me.

Thanks for the encouraging words! I’m going to give it another try, incorporating your suggestions.

@futuremrsrichardson: Thanks for the tip! Quick question - so you printed on cardstock, but then made a copy onto regular paper and then gocco’ed from that “regular paper” copy? Just want to make sure I’m understanding correctly!

@Miss Pug: I’ll try again running over the design only once! I did go over it a few times, b/c I wasn’t sure. It was strange though - some areas were really faint, while other areas were kinda blurry/gloopy.

@Mrs. Ballet Flat: I *think* I’m using a laser printer, but I will play around with the settings to see if that helps!

@Mrs. Fadingflowers: I have both Photoshop and Illustrator, but I have no clue how to use them at all. I’ll do some research on transferring my design on to Adobe; hopefully that will help a bunch! Thanks!

I had heard such great things about Photoshop & Illustrator when I first started reading WB. Then I saw how expensive the CS4 suite was. So, then I figured out I could get a student discount. FI & I enrolled in our local community college and took a Photoshop class & a CS4 intro class. And bought a CS4 for each of us (one Mac & one PC). We still spent less than the retail package AND learned most of the basics of CS4.

I managed to design my invitation suite in AI and took it to my printer who commented that I made it way easy!
