About Mrs. Sewing

This Little Light of Mine…

January 21st, 2010 @ 10:09 am by Mrs. Sewing

Elaborate flashes of color uplighting a lush topiary or architectural feature? Tiny yellow flares sprinkled across a venue like a magical fairy land or distant galaxy? Lighting can sure create an atmosphere, transforming even the dullest of spaces into a breathtaking dreamscape.

Unfortunately for us, interesting lighting is on the list of “would be nice, but…” ideas. So, no elaborate lighting? Fair enough, but we can still do something simple, right?

Tealights. Perhaps the most commonly used, these little candles are cheap and efficient, bringing instant table-side glow. But we’re going to cheat a little.

LED tealights. Much more expensive, I know. But the price difference is worth the peace of mine that come with the small electronics. It’s worth it to know that there’s no way your 19 year old brother can set himself on fire, or that your fiance himself won’t burn something down. Bored budding pyros and open flames don’t mix. Not that I think anyone would be bored, but you never know.

So Mr. Sewing and I flopped over to Big Lots and picked up about 60 of these little guys.

Now what should we put them in? Here’s what they look like in a double happiness glass:

They look better in person… the LEDs flicker, so it’s hard to take a picture with them all on at the same time! And in the case that the double happiness holders can’t come with us to Hawaii, what else can we use to put our LEDs in? Origami boxes? A little ribbon? Beads?

Are you using tealights or votives? Real or LED? What are you putting them in?

We’re using real candles, which I’m a little nervous about since we’re having our reception in a barn made out of wood, but we’re allowed to so… we’re going to give it a try.

You could make your own lanterns out of vellum paper. Just print the double happiness symbol on vellum paper and then use double sided tape to secure it as a lantern - voila! Pretty and cheap!

We’re using candles, but definitely going to use votives instead of long tapers. Totally afraid of the potential pyros.

I’m using fake tea lights at the church in little lanterns that will hang at every other pew - and real votives at the venue all over the place (tables, mantles, bar - you name it)

We used LED tea lights in glass pumpkins and apples. They looked really nice.

I’m surprised at how bright the LED flame looks! I always thought they burned rather dim. I think they’ll be beautiful however you use them. What about in paper lanterns?

If I do tealights I’ll have to do this… unless I put them in hurricane glasses. Oh, silly fire codes! ;)

We’re using LED tealights as well and I was shocked to find out how expensive they were. Back in December there was a sale at Walgreens for $.59 a tealight (max of 3 per coupon), so I hit up every Walgreens in SF and Daly City, purchasing the max each time I went until I scored 60 of those bad boys. Recently though, I discovered they sell a pack of 2 at the Dollar Tree in Pacifica. =)

I think these things are the greatest invention in the last how-ever many years since they’ve been invented, and I DEF will be using them!!

What about take out boxes w/ a pattern punched out? Or is that too…kitschy?

@lara bee: Oh! that’s a good idea!
@kayakgirl73: That sounds really cool!
@Merry Berry: Thanks for the resources! I know what you mean about them getting on the expensive side!
@Swiss Miss to Bee: I’m the definition of the word kitschy, so no problems! I actually have a bunch of little take out boxes, haven’t figured out how to use them yet though..
@tea: I love her twine tutorial!
