Dress Stage 0

January 22nd, 2010 @ 10:38 am by Mrs. Sewing

Two weekends ago Mr. Sewing and I went to our favorite fabric store in San Francisco, to search for the final dress fabric!

We came home with 20 yards of bleached white muslin for the under layers, 16 yards (the whole roll!) of poly poplin for the top layer of the skirt and underlayers of the corset, and 2 yards of lace for the top layer of the corset. The total cost? Almost a perfect $300. My wallet smiles at this.

As you can see, we’re still going to have to battle the “shiny” on the lace… but at least the poplin is not as reflective as the taffeta or satin. I may continue to search for a more matte-finish lace, so if anyone spots one, please let me know!

We also looked at the eco-friendly fabrics, since that was our original intent. Unfortunately, the only types they had were jersey knit and canvas! And I already have a canvas dress, I don’t need another one. So sadly, I’ll be destroying the earth on this one. :P

A close up of the lace pattern:

I have no idea :P It’s this beautiful antique-looking lace, but I don’t know any of the specifics!

how exciting! the lace is very pretty. is the lace shiny in person or just when you point a flash at it? with a higher grade camera, the flash won’t be pointing directly at it and therefore it may not be so shiny in the pictures. although i understand that you may not want it to be shiny in your guests’ point and shoot camera photos!

My dress was shantung ivory silk with tulle straps. Woot.

Here’s a link for alencon lace. It’s more expensive, but at least it’s out there. http://www.housefabric.com/categorysubview.asp?CategoryID=109&CategorySubID=299

I think the lace is very pretty — and I think that @Miss Pug is right, it might not photograph so shiny by a pro.

Have you checked at Britex downtown? They have a lot of different couture fabrics. (though expensive, I am sure.)

Silk Charmeuse & lemme tell you it is like butter. (It also has an embroidered lace illusion neckline.) Can’t wait to see what your finished product looks like. Guess you don’t have to worry about him seeing you in your gown before the wedding! :)

That lace is very pretty. I can not wait to see the finished product! My original dress was satin and it was SO heavy. My new dress is taffeta so it’s super lightweight which will be perfect for the beach.
