An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.

Frickin’ Invites, I Give Up

January 22nd, 2010 @ 5:52 pm by Mrs. Nachos

After I figured out my flip-flop debacle, I was feeling like I could conquer any DIY project that was dreamt up in my little noggin! But I have to tell you, our home party invites have seriously become a pain in the pooper. My original plan was to make them myself to save a bunch of money. If you remember, they started like this…

Frickin’ Invites, I Give Up : wedding diy invitations stationery 1 1

Then they morphed from this, which I don’t think I’ve shown you…

Frickin’ Invites, I Give Up : wedding diy invitations stationery 2 2

Then I changed them to this because I liked the tent card better…

Frickin’ Invites, I Give Up : wedding diy invitations stationery 3 3

But I couldn’t get the picture quality just right. So I thought I’d have Walgreens print the pics and I could attach them somehow to the card. But I couldn’t come up with a design I liked, and it was REALLY starting to bug me! So yesterday, I bit the bullet and decided to order them online. At this point, I’m so much happier paying someone to do them for me! I made 2 different ones and I took everyone’s advice and changed the wording a little so no one thinks I’m expecting. :) I made this one on Shutterfly and ordered just one to see how it looks in person. It should be here next week…

And I made this one on VistaPrint. I like this one because it’s the exact design I was trying to make on my own…

I changed the wording on the inside to black though, because it was an extra charge for color, and honestly, at this point I really don’t care what color the wording is, I just want them finished! I also wanted to order just one, but the minimum was 10, and I had a coupon for 50% off so it really wasn’t a big deal. I figure if we end up going with the other invite, I could always cut off the inside and give the photo portion to my family members if they want them. I do still plan on making the RSVP cards myself though, which I KNOW won’t be hard.

I can’t tell you how relieved I am to put this project into the hands of professionals. Being rid of the stress of figuring it out myself is worth every penny to me.

Did you attempt a DIY project to save money and fail miserably like I did? Did you turn to a professional, or scrap the idea altogether?

Awwww I’m sorry this has turned into such a mess! I’m going to attempt to make my STDs but I get the feeling we’ll end up just handing them over to someone at the very last minute.

Aww, Nachos I am sorry you got frustrated with it. I hope you love the ones from the pros. I am also a DIY fail…I was attempting to make my invites with pocketfolds and everything. Hated them with a passion, so I am scrapping it and going with Wedding Paper Divas.

I learned I am just not a DIY bride…I wish I was!

Vines on Clark is just down the street from my apartment last year (we move a little east this year, closer to the lake.) I love it!

I really like the picture invite you made on Vista Print. I’m terrified of DIYing my invites.

Ain’t no shame in handing things over to professionals! The concept is still yours and they look great!

The vistaprint looks great! We used vistaprint for our STD’s, and we’ve gotten lots of compliments on them!

I was going to do my own invites, but I got a great deal on invites through Etsy (a discontinued style) - and I was happy to be done w/ it. It might have even ended up cheaper than DIY. Good for you!

Hey, you still totally designed it yourself, right? You picked out the picture…came up with the wording and layout. I say it’s still a DIY project for the most part :) Just cuz you didn’t sit there and waste all your own computer ink doesn’t mean you didn’t do it! :) Great job!!

It’s semi-DIY, like that cooking show about semi-homemade foods. I still think the tent cards are fabulous.

I am willing to design it for you for free. I’m in Asia so printing is not included. If you are interested, please reply here & i’ll post my email address for you to send over the details.

I suspect the difficulty you are experiencing is mostly because you don’t have the right resources?

Wait are you pregnant? Did I miss something? Or what part of the wording made it sound like you were pregnant?

Also, you should sign up for vistaprint’s email list. They will send you ads everyday. Usually they will give you everything for free in these ads. They definitely give out 10 free greeting cards all the time. The ads that have free uploads too are the ones to keep.

@amariem25: Hahaha, no I’m NOT preggers :) The original wording said “There’s another Nacho in the house” and everyone said it sounded like we were announcing a pregnancy!

I love Etsy’s Alchemy feature:

http://www.etsy.com/alchemy/

Instead of browsing Etsy shops to find what you want, YOU post what you’re looking for and Etsy sellers will bid on your request! I found an amazing designer for my STD’s on Alchemy. You get to post your ideal price, but you’ll probably get bids from sellers willing to do it for less or more. Beware the really low priced ones and make sure to check out their shops for examples of previous work, because I found that a lot of their work looked amateur. BUT, I got responses from really talented designers and love the one I ended up with!

Oh, and you can request ANYTHING on Alchemy…..not just invites, but monogram designs, thank you cards, wedding toppers, a lifesize cardboard cutout of you and your fiance….LOL.
