Mrs. Dachshund, Fresno, CA Age and Occupation: 24, Legal Office Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Computer Technician Engagement Date: April 18, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: Victorian Gardens of Two Sisters About Me: I’m a 24-year-old Californian bride-to-be who found love in the most unlikely of places - an online video game! I’m a farmer’s daughter living in rural Central California, but will always have a special place in my heart for the city. My future husband is a 27-year-old extraordinarily tall, exceptionally cute, and undoubtedly Canadian boy who was able to sweep me off my feet and take me for his bride. I love color, folksy songs that make me smile, interior design, kettle corn, my one-year-old puppy, Juno, and my fiance, of course! We’re planning a DIY garden wedding with a laundry-list of projects, all while dealing with the bureaucracy that is American Immigration!
About Mrs. Dachshund

Long Overdue

January 22nd, 2010 @ 1:37 pm by Mrs. Dachshund

Despite the fact that our venue was the first decision we made, and the first wedding check to be written, I’ve yet to blog about it! I could never decide just how to attack my venue search posts, because at the time I had decided that I had the absolute worst experience searching for a venue in all of wedding-planning history. It wasn’t a story I wanted to revisit. Now, I’ve realized that our venue search was actually fairly simple, with very few speed bumps. Because it was the basis for my first wedding related disappointment, and my first (and only, I hope) wedding planning tears, the whole ordeal left a bad taste in my mouth. But I’m over it, and I’m ready to share my experience with you!

I started planning our wedding with the assumption that I wouldn’t find anything I liked, venue-wise or other, in this Podunk-middle-of-nowhere-town. I had little hope before I even started to look, simply because I didn’t know what was available. So I turned to Google. “Tulare wedding venues”, I typed. Wouldn’t you know it, my only two business results were International Agri-Center and Tulare County Fairgrounds.

Blech and blech. Google, you didn’t help subside my doubts at all!

So, I endured a few weeks of my parents trying to convince me to go with the banquet hall at the Intl. Agri-Center, and I was almost fed up.

Then, by word of mouth, I started to hear of some garden-y type venues that seemed much more our style… because we all know that whenever you mention to anyone that you’re getting married, they respond with, “Oh! My second-cousin’s-daughter’s-best-friend’s sister got married (insert random location here!)”

Well, thank you dozens of random people. With some of their suggestions, I had a decent list of venues to check out!

So, I started calling.

Apparently, May is a very busy month for weddings. PSA: Ladies. If you’re planning on getting married in May of 2011, book your venue now. Holy cow, April and May (of the next year, obv.) were already completely booked at about half of the venues I was calling.

Then. I found it. The perfect venue. I loved everything about it, from the gorgeous pond:

Long Overdue : wedding venues 189 1

To the picturesque gazebo:

Long Overdue : wedding venues 2 2

To the green, green grass:

Long Overdue : wedding venues 354 3

Can you imagine it all lit up at night? So pretty. I loved it, Mr. D loved it, and hallelujah there was one open Saturday in May. “Perfect! Hold it for us, we’ll be there tomorrow!” I exclaimed over the phone.

Daddy and Step Mom Doxie and I headed out the very next day, check in hand. We loved it just as much in person as in the photos online. Just as we sat down to discuss business, the owner looked through her date book and hit me with words I could hardly comprehend.

“What was your date again? May? Oh, it looks like I booked the last Saturday in May this morning .” She flipped through pages and pages. “We have an opening in October if you’re interested.”

And I cried. It wasn’t my finest moment, but at least I can say I made it to my car before the faucets turned on!

Up next: I put my disappointment aside and weigh my options.

What was your first planning disappointment? Was your search for the perfect venue easy-peasy, or was it much more difficult than you imagined?

I had the same thing happen! Perfect venue, only to find out it was booked at the end of May/beginning of June, when we wanted to get married. However I do live in a little bigger town so luckily there were plenty more to choose from.

It still amazes me how fast places book up! We went through a couple before we found one that wasn’t booked.

This very same thing happened to me. Monday, they had a bunch of dates, including one in June and one in July. That Saturday, all that was left was early May or late September. I wanted to be a June bride. But, alas, I am a September bride. C’est la vie I suppose. I still get to keep my fiance!

Oh, and I should add that I cried like a child over this in the car as we were pulling away from the venue. It was not my finest moment, LOL.

OMG! That’s why we booked 15 months in advance, I guess. :) But March is not as popular as May; I can’t believe it was gone when you got there!

@tea: I was really upset! And the kicker, the owner was my brother’s highschool best friend’s mother. Did you get all that? She knew our family. So upsetting!

Awww no! That’s terrible! Aw, that makes me so sad for you. Our reception venue was available exactly 2 days that would work, and we had them BOTH on hold for a few days.
