She’s Making You Wear Grey? : wedding bridesmaid dress Mean Lady mean-lady

Source

See that title up there? It was an exact quote from a girl who was supposed to help one of my bridesmaids find a dress. But I’m getting ahead of myself, let me start from the beginning. See, at the beginning of my planning I went through quite a few colors and ideas for what I wanted the bridesmaids to wear. Then suddenly it hit me. Grey! All of this was before I found the wonderful world of wedding blogs, including Weddingbee, so I didn’t realize just how popular that choice was. I thought I’d stumbled onto something unique and different.

I was excited about what I thought was a unique color for my bridesmaids’ dresses, but I was a little worried about it. I mean, usually the dress colors are bright and cheery, and only recently had I seen people warming up to the idea of black dresses. So there we were scouting out what regular stores might have for dresses in the lovely shade of grey. Now, usually I’m not one to ask for help; I like to browse the stores on my own, but this time I felt different. I was a bride, excited about my first weddingish outing. I wanted to share my excitement with the people around me.

So I asked a girl at the store if she could help us find some grey dresses. Said girl asked me what the dresses were for, and I told her that they were bridesmaid dresses. And she said, “She’s making you wear grey??” Now, I didn’t say it was for my wedding, but she still might assume that I was, at the very least, really good friends with the bride, which would be the reason I was shopping for a BRIDESMAID’S dress, but apparently that thought didn’t cross her mind. I was so shocked by her comment though, that I sheepishly said yes. Thankfully though, my bridesmaid spoke up and said, “Yes, grey, and she’s the bride. I think grey will look really great.” At that point sales girl was really embarrassed and pointed us in the direction of where the horrid grey dresses might be located.

After this shopping incident, I momentarily considered changing my grey dress idea, but then I realized that I was being silly. There was no need to change my dress color because some uninformed saleslady made a comment.

What has been the most interesting or colorful comment you’ve received while shopping for wedding related things?

aww, that’s sad when people rain on your parade like that…especially when they don’t consider that you could be right there!

Isn’t that just the best part of wedding planning? That everyone feels the need to give you their unsolicited opinion?

What a dumb thing to say! I love gray… I only wish I’d thought of it when I was picking dresses. :)

I’m putting my girls in long slate grey gowns and I have really good taste so you are in good company ;)

Seriously, though, everyone I know (brides, guests, coworkers) think it is really elegant. As do I.

I really like the idea! I wish I thought of it sooner (not that I can’t change my dress idea, I’ve just done it so many times!) I think they’ll look great!

That girl is just stupid and rude. Many brides go out with their bridesmaids to find dresses…so its very common that you could have been the bride. I hope she gets the same dumb comment when she plans her wedding! PS Ive seen grey bridesmaid dresses and thought they were beautiful. And how awesome that they can wear them again for some other party!

Heres my story!

I was getting upset that my bridesmaid dresses werent fitting them and was trying to be delicate with the zipper because its soft delicate fabric and we paid about $175 for them I think. And I wasnt sure if they would be able to be altered and they told me it was fine to order that early for a 12 yr old and a 14 yr old! So I called the store, which is also where my dress was waiting for me and where I bought my dress to, and was upset about the dresses not fitting and didnt want to pay a lot of money for alterations.

So I went in to the store with the girls and their dresses…PS they couldnt be there with me the first time when I picked them up so they tried them on the first time at home….the ladies at the store came in and pressed in and pulled out on the dress and up went the zipper! Well I was trying to be too delicate I guess! But I didnt want anything to rip! So I didnt get a chance to try on my gown and show my MOH yet and so when I tried it on the manager said, “Did you gain?”, as in gain weight!!! The lady who I loved that worked there came in pulled the dress up the rest of the way and said it looks beautiful! Thats why I love her and not the manager!

WOW THATs a long story!

I had some negative feedback on the fact that the bridesmaid dresses are a dark pink satin and they will have red & pink rose bouquets SO… I wanted shoes with color and I decided red satin shoes. (Which look awesome btw.) But a lot of people say… RED shoes with pink dresses? People just don’t know fashion. I personally love it. And it’s my day so people can get over it. Same with that sales lady!
Grey is a great idea! Gives you lots of opportunity to have other colors POP!

That’s ridiculous! I looove gray, and my girls may be wearing it (still undecided). I think it’s a super flattering color!

My girls were in shimmery tea-length pewter grey dresses. They were great! A random person at my church asked about the color of the BM dresses and then said “GREY? In the SUMMER? At a WEDDING? …well, I’m sure it’ll be fine.” Um, thanks, I’m glad you approve?

I love grey! Actually I may suggest this to my MOH. We’re having the worst time finding something to fit her (she’s petite, like, the cover girl for petite!).
The best comment I ever got was shopping for her dress and not finding one and the salesgirl saying “Oh, well we usually stock clothes for girls slightly older than you”. She’s 25 and older than me! I think my MOH was about to slap her.

I think grey is a great color! It washes me out, though, sadly… cause I really love it!

I’m doing gray bridesmaid dresses too and I got some rude commentary for it too. I told our sales associate and she says “really? gray really doesn’t scream spring wedding”. Thanks lady, I guess you don’t want our business in your store either.

Some people suck. Here’s my tale of awesome suckiness: When I was dress shopping (which I wasn’t really looking forward to), after trying on 1983 dresses, I put on this chiffon number with detail work over my tummy pooch area. I expressed concern about it bringing attention to my least favorite body part, and my consultant said, “Actually, this is the first dress you’ve tried on where it doesn’t look like you have a tummy.” And then, I lit her on fire with my eye-laser-beams-of-hate. Or maybe not, but I wanted to!

I was on the phone with one of my bridesmaids as she was looking up the dress that was the current front runner (a light blue aqua ish very popular color) and her roommate (a mutual friend Ive known for years) piped up “Turquoise?! Eeeww! That would look soo terrible on my skin!” And yes, she knew I was on the phone. Any wonders as to why she wasnt a bridesmaid? grrr…
