The Candy Man Can…

January 22nd, 2010 @ 10:59 am by Mrs. French Fries

When I started planning our wedding some 16 months ago, I avoided deciding on a “theme”. I picked colors, and my dress (erm… I guess technically I picked two), and various other elements for our day, but… no theme. In retrospect, I think I was worried it would go awry. I didn’t know if I could pull it off without it looking overdone, and I didn’t want people to think, ‘Oh! Mr. & Mrs. French Fries’ wedding! That was the one where they did (insert theme here) and it was really weird.’ So, I avoided it.

Raise your hand if you can see where this is going.

Cut to: 6 months before the wedding, and me deciding on a “loosely based” theme. I still hesitate to even call it a “theme” … so, I guess we’ll call it a motif? Or a feeling? Something to tie everything together? Or… I don’t know.

Fine. It’s a theme.

What is this wonderful magical element that’s going to tie everything together? Candy.

The Candy Man Can… : wedding food 1 1

Yum-o. Source

I’ve alluded to Mr. FF’s and my shared love of candy and all things sweet in the past; it’s why our centerpieces will be jars of various candies. But… big whoop! Everyone likes candy, right? What makes our sweet teeth any more special than anyone else’s? And why would we use candy at our wedding?

Well. When I say that we love candy… I mean… we love candy. At any given time we will have one or two types of chocolate candy in our house (my preference) and one or two non-chocolate types of candy in our house (Mr. FF’s preference). Mr. FF has been known to make a late night Walgreens run to pick up whatever we’re both craving at a moment’s notice. Oh, and there’s a bit of nostalgia factor for us with candy, too. Mr. French Fries brought me a different type of candy every single time we went on a date in the first months of our courtship. I guess I had mentioned on the night that we met that I liked candy, and he picked up on it. What a sweet guy, hey? (Um, pun obviously intended.) So, I guess you could say it’s just “us”. Some couples are both writers, or they love fly fishing or baseball or underwater basket weaving. We love candy. (This also spells disaster for our future children’s teeth!)

And, really… I think we’ll all agree that love is sweet, non? ;)

Where will we be using candy, you say? Well, it will be a motif on our paper products (our awesome invitation designer is working on that! more on this later!), in reception centerpieces, scattered on cocktail tables and the bar areas, and in a few other places as well. You’ll have to wait and see!

So, this is where you come in, hive! What candy do you love? I’m working on getting a list together of our favorite types of candy, but I want input. What’s your favorite? What do you dislike? Let me know in the comments!

Laffy Taffy is a definite favorite, so is anything gummy. I’m a sucker for those haribo gummy coca-cola bottles. My FI adores skittles in any and all varieties.

i think that’s awesome to use candy throughout your wedding. not only do you guys both clearly love candy, but it has sentimental value in that that’s how mr. french fries romanced you!!

Fun idea! I’m a huge candy person too! I love York peppermint patties - they have heart-shaped ones out for V Day now with pink centers! Also Baby Ruth, Swedish fish, O Henry, Tootsie rolls…I should stop now before I have to go out now and buy them all! ;-)

swedish fish ALL THE WAY. But only the classic red kind. None of that new schnazzy muti-colored crap.

I love Reese’s PB cups, and now like the Dark Chocolate kind, and tootsie rolls. Non chocolate candies I like twizzlers and any kind of gummi bears.

I could pop Tootsie Rolls all night long! Our friends got married this past summer and had candy centerpieces/table names and it was great! We got to help set up (the girlfriends of the groomsmen) and what we learned was to be careful not to put certain candy out in the sun! Seriously, it didn’t occur to anyone that outdoors in August in California wasn’t the best place to lay Mounds Bars on a table. Their was candy at each persons place setting, so we knew we could eat them. I’d make sure to have something that tells people to eat the candy if they’re part of your table decoration (we had photo favors & so many people left them because they thought they were just decor)

What a great idea! We’re definitely looking for centerpieces that aren’t flowers or candles too, and this is a great alternative!

I read an article in the New York Times about a couple that definitely had a candy-themed wedding. I think what you will end up doing will be a bit more tasteful than this one. Take a look:

(I just caught that it was at Dylan’s Candy Bar in Manhattan). Wow. As far as favorite candies, I love gummy peaches, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Boston style fruit slices (gummy, coated in sugar… ohhh so good), lemon drops, Umm, I think I’ll stop before I get carried away. Mmm.
