Mrs. Frozen Yogurt, Dallas Age and Occupation: 28, Special Projects Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Equity Trader Engagement Date: March 19, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Marie Gabrielle, Dallas About Me: I was born and raised in Texas, and have lived in several of the cities across the state, but I currently reside in Austin. I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. I met Mr. Frozen Yogurt in a bar, though he doesn't even drink! And now we are planning a modern yet vintage wedding in Dallas while dealing with the trials and tribulations of first time homeownership.

Cake Drama

January 25th, 2010 @ 6:22 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

Ugh. I have gone back and forth over this for so long and cannot make a decision. So, I need your advice. See, I have this vision in my head of a beautiful cake on top of a pedestal cake stand. Only, I picked a cake that looks like this:

See that square bottom? Apparently they do not make many pedestal cake stands in a square shape in the size that I need. I talked to my cake lady about this, and she offered me two solutions:

  1. Switch to all round layers and have my beloved pedestal cake stand, but this would mean 10-12 fewer slices of cake.
  2. Use a traditional square silver cake stand that is elegant, but not really vintage, which is the look I’m going for.

I’ve gone over my guest list and am trying to determine just how many people will come so that I can see if it will matter much if I lose the 10-12 additional pieces. But there are so many unknowns! This person might come and this other person might not, but I really won’t know until our RSVPs are due (and those of you that are married are laughing at me thinking, ‘Yeah right, people will respond to you by the RSVP date.’ I know, I know, but a girl can dream). So, see this is a huge dilemma and one that I still don’t have a solution for.

And there is another problem, too. Miss French Fries posted a picture of the most beautiful cake I’ve ever seen in my life and now it’s all that I can think about.

So moving to the round layers is fine with me. I’m just worried about losing pieces of cake.

And then there’s this. I just keep dreaming about these beauties:

So, what should I do?

Option A: Use the pedestal cake stand and hope that the lost pieces of cake won’t matter. I mean, hey, we’ll have a groom’s cake, too.

Option B: Suck it up and use a silver cake stand. And get a pedestal cake stand for my home so I stop crying about it.

Personally I think you should lose the 10-12 pieces. There will be another cake there, and not everyone actually does eat cake. That way you get your dream stand.

Option A. Not everyone will eat cake, believe it or not, AND you have a second cake! You could also tell whoever is slicing your cake to make the pieces slightly smaller.

Option A- and if you are worried about not having enough cake ask the baker to also have a half sheet cake in the back that you can serve!

So are you planning (currently) for a slice of bride’s cake for everybody and then slices of groom’s cake in addition? If so, you can afford to lose 10-12 slices. Not everybody will eat two pieces.

Option A- you’ll still have the groom’s cake, plus I doubt everyone will even eat cake.

Option A - I would ALLWAYS eat cake, but everyone isn’t as much of a cake-lover as me!

My reception venue manager says that SO MANY couples end up throwing cake away…he’s like, “don’t spend too much on the cake!!”

So…losing 10 or so slices won’t be the end of the world.

Change to a round tier, get your stand and serve the 10-12 groom’s cake… not everyone eats cake anyway. I think you’ll be fine numbers wise and happy about the cake and decor! yay! win win.

Option A - Not everyone will eat cake and you can always let the venue or whoever is slicing your cake know to slice some a bit smaller so you can get those extra slices out of it if needed

I’m a pastry chef and wedding cakes are my thing. I’m even doing my own cakes this fall… I’m a little crazy.

Anyway, talk to your cake decorator. I know she only gave you 2 options but there are really more. Do an extensive search for cake stands. There are square ones out there made out of glass or milk glass that look vintage even though they are new. If you find one that you love and the stand is only 10″ ask your decorator if they can do a scaled down version of your cake. Maybe have a 10″ square as the base and then smaller circles for the other two tiers. This will yield much less cake than the original. But, to make up for that loss of cake ask the baker to make a sheet cake using the same filling and butter cream. This should also bring down the over all cost. I know it seems like a lot but the kitchen is going to have to cut the cake anyway and this way they can have the sheet cake in the back and have it sliced ahead of time… I’ve worked my share of weddings too and sheet cakes are way easier to cut. Not everyone will eat cake so between these 2 cakes and the grooms cake there should be plenty. Let me know if you have any other questions, I’d be happy to help.

If you didn’t have the groom’s cake, I’d go with B since I just worry about there being enough for everyone. But since you’ve got the grooms cake, you should be good. Option A!

Also voting for Option A. If you’re really concerned with not having enough slices, you can always order an extra small square of the same cake that stays hidden in the back and can be sliced for guests. Or, serve the groom’s cake.

option A.
you could always do smaller slices of cake.
FI and I usually end up sharing a slice b/c we don’t really want that much cake.

haha! it’s very clear that the pedestal cake stand is important to you–and it’s great that you know that! don’t worry about the lost pieces–like you said, you have the groom’s cake! if you’re really worried about the lost pieces, give a little time for the rsvp’s to roll in and then make a final decision.

p.s. if you do have any leftover cake you can send it my way.

I found this cake a few seconds ago and thought of your post. It has the square layer- just not on the bottom. Maybe this will help:http://wedding.theknot.com/wedding-planning/wedding-cakes/articles/50-amazing-wedding-cakes.aspx?page=16

I would lose the 10-12 pieces. Like you said - there’s also the grooms cake and guests aren’t all going to want both cakes. In fact, some guests won’t want cake at all. So have your pedestal:)
