Mrs. Pencils's Picture
Mrs. Pencils, Washington DC/Frederick, MD Age and Occupation: 24, Program Director, Education Non Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Administrative Assistant, Ocean Conservation Non Profit Engagement Date: July 26, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: Morningside Inn About Me: I'm a nerdy Northwestern girl who always knew she was meant to live in the East, harboring a deep love of ice cream, underwear, Diet Coke with a splash of Coca-Cola, pashminas, scrapbooking, stationery, wall calendars and books written for preteens. I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! I'm loving the adventure of planning a Maryland wedding and Rocky Mountain reception, and most of all, I just love love!
About Mrs. Pencils

And then there was one. No need to cue the dramatic music, or get out the tissues—for me, the choice of my wedding dress was a very simple, exciting, but not an overly emotional, decision. I mean, I loved it, but I didn’t need a fainting couch, ya know?

She Likes It, He Likes It, I Like It! : wedding wedding dress Faintin faintin

It came down to three simple things: Did I like how I looked and felt? Yes. Could I envision myself in this dress on our wedding day? Yep. Did Mr. Pencils and my parents all like it? Yeppers.

Sold.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that I can’t help but make this face when I’m in it:

I didn’t shed a tear, and Mama Pencils didn’t need a moment. I AM a crier—but for ridiculous, sad things. As in, I can’t watch that movie Homeward Bound because Shadow falls in the hole and gets hurt… I cry every time I see an emotional scene between a father and a daughter… but those shiny tear drops don’t appear when I’m EXCITED. I felt sort of awful about this when I chose my dress but I’ve since spoken to a lot of women who didn’t cry. Maybe we can call this the true complex of the Wedding Industry Complex—we feel we have to be completely overwhelmed or get “that feeling”. I know some chicas do and I’m so glad! I also know that so many of us are simply glad to have found a gown that we love!.

The biggest cause for hesitation was the simple location factor of the dress—it was in Oregon and I live in Maryland. When the consultant said that the designer (Essence of Australia) was discontinuing the dress in March, that she would give us free shipping on the dress AND there was no sales tax in Oregon. One burrito lunch and an “are you sure?” talk later, we bought it. (Meaning, of course, glorious Papa and Mama Pencils forked over their credit card and I smiled like Veruca Salt when she got the golden ticket—thanks ’rents!)

Mr. Pencils loves the back because he says it looks like shoelaces:

Clearly, I continue to master the art of looking awkward in dress photos…

And we put it up against a potential yellow bridesmaid’s dress because…. well, cuz we could. Once you find it, you don’t want to take that sucker off and will find any excuse to wear it a little longer!

P.S. Please imagine it without the sad little spaghetti straps you see. I’m going bare shouldered, but at the time, thought I wanted some sort of straps.

Did you cry when you found “it”? Do you think there really is a “moment” when you find your dress?

That dress is stunning on you! It is so flattering and fits so well!

I went about my decision in a similar way, although without my FI there. No tears, and very little emotions involved in the decision. But I too LOVE my dress.

OMG That scene in Homeward bound? I lose it every single time. Common Shadow! You have to try! Wah! Don’t get me started on about 20% of the scenes in My Dog Skip.

That dress is stunning on you, I love the fabrics it’s so pretty!

I didn’t cry but I as soon as I walked in front of the mirror I looked at my sister, she smiled and said ‘that’s it, isn’t it?’ and I knew it was :-)

I didn’t cry either…but I was definitely so excited that I stayed in the dress for thirty minutes, and went back to just try it on three times before buying it lol.

Love it!! The shoelaces comment made me giggle (definitely something my FI would say.) I didn’t cry either, I was just really really happy I finally found something. Plus I was around my mom who is not at all a crier, so I know I would have felt weird if I cried over a dress.

That scene in Homeward Bound was the first time any movie EVER made me cry! It was a real milestone for me.

I blame you for now having songs from Cabaret stuck in my head all day. =P

LOVE your dress! You look amazing in it.

So happy you found your dress!!!

Like you I didn’t believe in “the moment” either until this weekend when I found my dress. I had been to 7 other bridal shops and tried on who knows how many dresses (150 maybe?). When I found mine this past weekend I had been at the shop for almost 2 hours and in and out of probably 30 dresses. But the moment I saw myself in “the one” my FMIL and my mom both said I started jumping up and down like a little girl. And then when I went to stand on the pedestal thing (cause of course the dress was to long) I teared up and I NEVER cry. One of my bridesmaids said in the past 19 years she had only seen me cry once. So yes for some brides there is that moment when you just know. I never would have believed it had I not experienced it.

@Miss Nachos: relief is a great word for it. the search was finally over. happy :)
@Miss Sewing: haha thank you :)
@di5308: thank you! It was much more of a calm moment than an emotional one for me too :)
@lolo7835: I know!! I cannot watch movies with dogs in them. Just can’t.
@Miss Scissors: aww thank you! and mostly I think it’s our moms that win for taking photos at awkward moments. these were the best four out of thirty! lol
@Shaema:that was the exact moment I had with Mr. P and my mom. They looked at me, at each other and back at me. sold!
@SanDiegoAli: aww, thank you! :)
@Navy_Baby:exactly! I think I put the baby on three times before I bought it…and now I put it on as often as I can now that I have it :)
@Cole B: thank you :) it makes me feel better that a big crier didn’t cry!
@EAQ219:really really happy is the perfect way to describe it!
@Miss French Fries: oh good :) and thank you!
@Violachap: thank you! I heart lace :)
@Sage: haha! that moment truly kills me. I refuse to watch it.
@adias.angel: I am SO glad you got that moment! I found that I couldn’t stop smiling, which was good :)
@Miss Pug:agreed! Even when I begin to question my choice, I go look at it hanging on the back of my bedroom door and I’m all good :)

I didn’t cry either. I was too concerned about price, sizing, etc. I’m pretty sure I just stood there with a frown on my face, trying to work out the logistics in my head :P
