I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!

Styling the Little Sis

January 25th, 2010 @ 1:26 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Well, we’ve gone over what the groomsmen might like to wear; what about the bridesmaids? There will be only one: Sewing-Sis. My ten year old sister decided right away that there was no way she’d be wearing a poofy-froofy tutu dress. And while I love a good froofy dress, I can’t imagine her in one, anyway. Actually, my first thought was to put her in a cute red pencil skirt and matching jacket. Like a mini business woman! But after massive amounts of Googling, I have yet to find a business suit for 10 year olds, much less in a red color.

So together with Sewing-Mom, we had her look through some websites for dresses that were “sexy” enough for her grown-up tastes.

I really liked the halter dress, but she nixed that off the list in a blink. We both like the red with black overlay, but Sewing-Mom thinks it’s a bit too dramatic. Sewing-Sis went to bed before we could show her the last dress (#3), but I have a feeling it’s the one we’ll go with: the red ball gown with the pickups and sweetheart neckline. It looks like my dress! Only shinier. It also has a lace-up back, just like mine.

Well, the next day after school she came home and looked at our ideas. Being that she is my little sister, she declared she would design her own dress, and proceeded to whip out a pencil and paper.

Sassy, eh? I must know - what kind of belt is that? A buckle in the front and a flower in the back!
I’d love for her to wear something she feels extra special in, but unless she gets some family-talent support, I’m not sure if I could promise it to her. I don’t know how I’d be able to size a growing 10 year old. I’ll have to keep searching for a pre-made dress that meets all her criteria!

Anyone else have a picky bridal party member to dress? How are you ensuring that she/he feels extra-special in their formal wear?

I know exactly how you feel! My niece is a junior bridesmaid and she is running the show! She needed to have a dress that is sophisticated enough for her tastes, so rather than wear a “junior” dress, she will actually be wearing the same dress as my other bridesmaids. Luckily she is 5′2″ so this could actually work although it will be a nightmare to take in; also she’s 11.

I love that she drew her own dress. 10 is a tough age to dress in formal wear — too old for frou-frou and cute, but too young for sexy. I can’t wait to see what you pick!

Oh, and I should add that MY sister was every bit as picky with her outfit, and she’s only 4. Must be a little sister thing ;)

@marcam882: Unfortunately my sis isn’t tall enough, otherwise I would totally do that! She only seems to like the big-girl dresses anyway, lol.
@flamingred: haha, she’s thinking a little ahead of her time ;)
@Miss Pug:@alishaneva: Cute? More like demanding, lol :P
@Mrs. Star: I agree, must definitely be a little sister thing!

From day one, I’ve been obsessed with finding the all-perfect bridesmaid dress for my bridal party. This has proven to be no easy task! To be a winning dress in my book, the dress needed only to flatter all five of my bridesmaids! Although I preferred a certain color, or really one of two or three colors, what mattered most to me was that each and every one of my bridesmaids felt as beautiful as the bride on her wedding day, oh and that they could wear the dresses again of course. I have been in far too many uncomfortable, unflattering, borderline-hideous bridesmaid dresses that made their way to the local Goodwill store, to put my gals in the same posititon. I’m a born people pleaser and if the bridesmaids look and feel uncomfortable/unhappy, I would be unhappy. “Unhappy” isnt’ how I want to spend my wedding day. After polling my bridesmaids, I realized that everyone had a different body part they were trying to hide/minimize and everyone had different tastes when it comes to the length of the dress, sash or no sash, etc. I was driving myself bonkers trying to please everyone all at once. After many months of searching for the all-perfect bridesmaid dress, I gave up. I came to the sad realization that there isn’t an all-perfect bridesmaid dress to suit all six of our tastes. The best I could do was find a dress that made the most self-conscious gal, with the most “real” concerns, feel like a million bucks. So, I chose a dress with an empire waist, a pleated full skirt, a high/full-coverage back and optional straps. The empire waist makes everyone look slimmer, the full skirt skims over hips, thighs and bottoms, and the high/full-coverage back is for those bridesmaids wishing to wear their Spanx. Phewwww…glad this one is behind us! The color or length may not be everyone’s cup o’ tea, but at least I feel confident that everyone will look and feel comfortable on our special day!

What a young artist, I love the belt! I’m sure you could fashion such a belt for her, but the corset slit in the front may be a bit more challenging. Too cute!

@wagswifetobe: Whoa, I’m glad I don’t have to figure out outfits for multiple girls! Good job on getting everyone something they could agree on!

And that’s a good idea about the belt! I probably could just make her that part at least!
@Kimberly: You’re right, it is pretty similar! I’ll have to look into that dress, thanks for the link!
