I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.

The Vendors That Could Have Been….

January 25th, 2010 @ 4:29 pm by Mrs. Cola

It strikes me as odd that, even in this economy, I sometimes feel like some wedding vendors don’t want my money.

The Vendors That Could Have Been.... :  wedding food Money L  {Source}

Now, this post may sound like a bit of a rant, but I like to think it’s more of a venting of a frustration with vendors, that I’m sure others have had…

See, it’s no secret that I like to research, to the point of going overboard sometimes.

But when searching for wedding vendors (and, well, wedding everything!), I know I’m not going to be happy making a decision until I’ve seen every. option. available. I need to compare pricing, service policies, pretty much everything to make an informed decision. (And to save money too, since the more I research, the better discounts I usually find!)

And because I spend about 12-14 hours a day on my computer, I like to do almost all of my wedding research online. I like the ease of just shooting off emails to request quotes from many vendors at once (all separate emails though), or filling out the online quote request forms, rather than having to individually call each and every vendor. Convenience for the 2010 bride and all that jazz, right?

But for some reason, I’ve found that in almost every one of my quests to research vendors online, there are invariably some vendors who just don’t respond. For example, in my search for a DOC, there were 4 or 5 that never emailed me back. Party rental places who I’ve contacted about their rental policies and delivery charges who’ve been silent. Bridal salons who have a ’Contact Us’ form on their website, but never responded to the inquiries. Last week I requested about 10 online quotes for charter buses, and guess how many have emailed me back? One!

And what’s even worse are the vendors who will make initial contact with you, and then drop off the face of the planet. Most recently, I was looking into having a garlic fries cart for an end of the night snack for all our guests, since garlic is my favorite food. I found the only cart in the area, emailed them, and they responded right away saying they could do it. I immediately emailed them back saying I would verify with our venue that it would be allowed, and they emailed me right back saying to just give them a call. I was excited… yay for vendors with a right now response time. So I called them a few days later and left a voicemail with all the details. Nothing. That was a week before the holidays, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt, but after leaving another voicemail earlier this month, followed by two follow up e-mails, I’ve given up on my dream of having a portable garlic fries cart at our wedding. :(

So my question to the hive is, has this happened to any of you? Are there vendors you’ve contacted that have never respond, even after several follow ups? I guess we should look at it as a way to weed out the bad vendors…

i have definitely had this problem and it definitely cost those vendors my business. If you want customers, you have to call them back, even if it’s just to say they’re already booked for you day and are unable. Some sort of response is just common courtesy (and good customer service)!

Since I’m planning from afar, I had to have vendors that used email frequently. So if someone didn’t respond, I just knew I couldn’t work with them. I don’t think I missed out on anything exciting though!

a big ME TOO! It seriously baffles my mind. Isn’t that the point of working in a service industry? Responsiveness? I finally concluded that some must be so popular they didn’t need my business.

I take your last take on it - let the vendors weed themselves out. I don’t have time to babysit and handhold vendors. If they want my money, they need to have some customer service to back it up. I work in the customer service industry, so I have pretty high standards for turn around times!

Response time is a HUGE deal for me when considering vendors. I mean really, if they don’t even HAVE my money yet and they are blowing me off, it terrifies me about how they’ll be when they DO have it!

I came across several flakey ones that never responsed. Oh well, made the decision easier!

i think you’re right in that you gotta drop people who aren’t responsive, but man i am practically crying at the thought of you not having your garlic fries cart.

I agree with @Mrs. Lamb: you don’t have time to run after every single vendor that doesn’t respond to you. Let those vendors take themselves out of the running, so you don’t have to!

Those garlic fries sound amazing! I’ve actually never heard of them before, where can you find them?
Hopefully they’ll respond soon and somehow make up for their rudeness so you can have your fries after all!

I have had the same exact problem. It’s incredible! We’ve been looking for our venue for months now because customer service at most of these places just hasn’t been up to par. We’re hopefully closing in on one soon!

I hope you get your garlic fries! They sound delicious and now I’m super hungry!

I had an issue trying to get ahold of our band that we have already booked to see if I could add on cocktail hour and ceremony music. I didn’t hear from him for over a week- until this morning, when he emailed to let me know that his computer was in the shop.
Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t… either way, it’s annoying when you have to chase down people. Too bad you don’t have another vendor for your garlic fries! :(

Oh. My. God. Thank god there are others — seriously, WTF, vendors??? Don’t you WANT my money?? I had to practically beg caterers to respond to my calls and emails. It was crazy. There is no way that you are SO busy that you can’t bother to return an email. It makes me sad, especially when it’s something we really want. Boo …

I’ve had this SAME problem! Honestly, if they don’t respond back to an initial email, I’d hate to think how they’d behave once they had my money already. It’s really a blessing in disguise!

I live in a small community, so it was extremely frustrating when nearly everyone I called/emailed did that. It’s surprising how many websites have “contact” features that don’t actually work. We ended up having to book some vendors who were less than stellar with communication b/c that was all we could get!

@Everyone, so glad I’m not the only one who vendors like to ignore!

@Pug, MandyW, roxymarie, and Miss Root, I know, I’m super sad about no fries too! It was the only portable cart I was able to find in the area, since most of the time garlic fries are sold in permanent stands at Giants games and stuff. :(

Yes, definitely a blessing in disguise. Unless the vendor is a 75 year old master cake baker or something so specialized and niche that they don’t NEED to use different forms of communication, they really are just shorting themselves good business by not following up. I agree w/ KMSull for sure. Though they’re really doing themselves an additional disservice, b/c now you’ll regard those vendors as lame, and give recommendations as such, even if they would be truly lovely to work with.

My photographer kind of disappeared after he got his deposit. We were supposed to do engagement photos last June, but it wouldn’t stop raining all summer and kept getting pushed back and he hasn’t contacted me to reschedule.

OMG YES!!! We had contacted a DJ and happened to meet with him the day before be was leaving on vacation with his family (they work as a husband and wife team). So The husband had made a very good impression on us and we told him we’d call him when he was back from his vacation to let him know what we decided. I left them a voicemail and no response for like 3 weeks then got an email from the wife who was so blazay about stuff. I asked her about travel fee and how we were within the 60 miles indicated on the sheet her husband had given me and she told me “oh then I guess we’ll swallow the travel fee” WTH!!!

umm we didn’t go with them! I don’t get it either. You would think they would want to talk to you and get your business!

Same problem here. I called the florist that my aunt works with all the time. The same florist just did my cousin and my sisters weddings this last summer and now I can’t seem to get her to call me. I first called 2 weeks ago and then again another week ago. I’m having my fiance call just to see if it’s my last name she doesn’t want to work with. :)

Me too! In the beginning I had major problems getting our catering manager to respond in a timely manner. She has odd hours, but is finally answering questions that I have. (Maybe because she realizes I’m serious about shelling out all this money??) Anywho, I normally wouldn’t put up with it, but I really want this particular food! :)

Another annoyance I’ve stumbled upon is vendors whose emails are jumbled with very confusing and incorrect grammar. I immediately cross them off my list. I just don’t trust them to be professional.
