Now that we’ve picked out the ladies’ outfits, it’s time to move on to the menfolk. Both the Mister and I agreed that we didn’t want anything too crazy—we pretty much wanted a classic look. I had something like this in mind:
Yup, I definitely had that in mind. And his tux looks pretty good, too. (I know, he’s years younger than me - what?).
With visions of Robert dancing in my head, we headed over to the nearest Men’s Wearhouse. For the uninitiated, this place is like the Kleinfeld of menswear (minus the bridal entourage and cameras filming “Say Yes to the Tuxedo”).
They’ve got morning suits, tails, no tails, cummerbunds galore, bow ties of all shades - and that’s just the beginning. Feeling a bit overwhelmed, our sales consultant walked us through the myriad of options. After a few agonizing minutes (”1 button or 2?”, “Bow tie or regular?”) here’s what we came up with:
1. Calvin Klein Two-Button Super 100’s Notch Lapel

According to our consultant, the two-button is the default tuxedo style that is flattering for most men. The one-button shows more of the vest or cummerbund, if that’s what you like. The three-button is best pulled off by taller men. And the “Super 100’s”? No idea. I thought it might have something to do with the fabric. Mr. Hammy likes to think it’s the tuxedo of superheros.
2. Vest - White (Groom) and Midnight (Groomsmen)
We had a hard time choosing between a white vest and a black vest for Mr. Hammy, and in the end went with white because we had to put something down, and the consultant told us we could make changes to the order up to 14 days before. In other words, we’re putting off the decision. For the groomsmen, we went with midnight blue to match the bridesmaids. We’re definitely going with the tie instead of the bow tie.
3. Accessories that no one sees that we spent way too much time pondering

Cufflinks and suspenders - Wow. By the time we finished making the decision about these two things, I wanted to throw one of those shiny tuxedo shoes across the room. The Mister had the hardest time deciding between black cufflinks or silver cufflinks, and black/white suspenders. We literally spent 20 minutes on this decision, but somehow I didn’t think, “No one sees them!!” or, “You think this is hard, try picking out a wedding dress!” would fall under the constructive feedback category (I know, I’m bad). Ladies, consider yourself warned - your groom may spend an inordinate amount of time on the color of his suspenders. Practice your patient nod and smile in advance.
4. And falling into the “I’m gonna have to veto that” category

Yes, you can add a top hat and cane to your wedding day outfit. The consultant told us that we could even keep it afterward, and the Mister was even more enthused. However, when he nixed the idea after I offered to pay for it if he promised to only wear it at home, I knew he was playing another game of wedding chicken. Nice try, buddy.
What will your groom and groomsmen be wearing?
