Shall We Dance?

January 26th, 2010 @ 6:20 pm by Mrs. French Fries

I have Sirius XM radio in my car, and it’s the one thing that I can count on to get me through my long commute day after day. Well, that and being able to check Twitter at stoplights. (At stoplight, you hear me! I’m not Twittering and driving at the same time, yo. Consider that your Public Service Announcement for the day.) My radio presets include Alt Nation, The Coffee House, The Loft, and their ’80s and ’90s devoted stations. (What? I’m sure you know all the words to Ice, Ice Baby by heart, too.)

But there’s one station that I find myself flipping to more and more as the wedding draws near. XM – Love. That’s right, a station completely devoted (no pun intended) to love songs.

It’s not that I’m in a lovey dovey mood more than usual; it’s that for the past six months or so Mr. FF and I have searched (in vain) for our first dance song. XM – Love actually isn’t helping very much, since they have “hits” by Celine Dion and Barry Manilow on heavy rotation. So why do I listen to it? I guess because I have a glimmer of hope that they’ll play something that fits Mr. FF’s and my “first dance standards”. (Please note: this glimmer is fading quickly.)

  1. It must not be a sad love song or have sad-ish type lyrics. This eliminates about 80% of my indie/emo love songs right off the bat. Le sigh.
  2. It must be somewhat upbeat, but still dance-able. Neither one of us has two left feet, but we’re not in the running for So You Think You Can Dance, either.
  3. We both must like how it sounds. This seems pretty basic, but we’re kind of picky about our music. For us, this means no country.
  4. It must not be overplayed – read: we want something a little nontraditional. This one is the doozy. No “True Companion” or “From This Moment”. Not that there’s anything wrong with these choices; they’re just not really what we’re going for.

There have been plenty of options that we’ve considered, but nothing has really fit the bill. So, the search continues! … On a station other than XM – Love. :)

Do you have a somewhat nontraditional first dance song?

we’re using “The Book of Love” by Peter Gabriel…. it’s sweet and romantic, and has some clever lyrics that FI really likes.

“Grow Old With You” from The Wedding Singer. It’s silly and cute and not too long. I can’t have a long song because the FH is really not looking forward to dancing in front of everyone so I want to keep it as short and painless as possible for him.

Haha I am laughing so hard because I work for SIRIUS XM and listen to the Love channel all the time- and everyone makes fun of me :). I think we have the same pre-sets too- although I try and fit SIRIUS XM U into the rotation once in a while so I have some clue about 2010 music!

I’m trying to convice FI that we should use Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe”. I don’t know if it meets your criteria, as it’s technically about someone dying, but the lyrics are SO beautiful and so “US”.

we used “i will” by the beatles. it’s sweet, not overdone, and (even better) only about 90 seconds long!

I have a little bit of an obsession with thinking of alternative first dance songs…but my SO nixes almost all of them! I love
“The Luckiest” by Ben Folds, “Oh” by DMB, “Aint that a kick in the head” Dean Martin, “I’ve got the world on a string” Frank Sinatra. I could keep going on and on…but alas, he loves songs that are played on the radio so we’re deciding between “Bubbly” by Colbie Caillat or “Smile” by Uncle Kracker

We’re going to use “Fishing in the Dark” by Garth Brooks (yep, country for us!). It’s pretty upbeat and not a super known song, but has lots of special meaning for us… my fiance drunk dialed me right after we met and sang the entire song to me! It also describes the summer that we first started dancing and he played it on his cell phone as he proposed :)

We love listening to XM Sirius Coffee House! We have a home sirius and he takes the radio on the road with him for work. Our first dance song is nontraditional…Its “Ever the Same” by Rob Thomas…who we both love (his music that is!) Maybe consider your fav artist or an artist you both like and see some songs on their cds that werent hits or released on the radio. Good luck.

The first dance is tough. We’re still undecided as well. At the moment A Foggy Day by Frank Sinatra and My Life Would Suck Without You by Kelly Clarkson.

Good luck!

I really wanted to use “A Girl Like You” by Pete Yorn, but we’re going with something else that sort of became our song. Death Cab for Cutie also had a couple songs I really liked for a 1st dance.

I went to the wedding of my child-hood best friend last May, and their first dance song was I’ll Be Loving You Forever, by New Kids on the Block! It was awesome.

We picked Sparks by Coldplay. We picked it about 2 days before the wedding!

Hahaha - I check Twitter/email at stoplights too! It drives Mr. GP nuts :) Love your preset stations, wish I had Sirius - and I think it’s hilarious you are listening to XM-Love! Good luck with that ;)

We just picked our first dance song and it is definitely not traditional OR conventional! It’s 80s song Forever Young - but the 2009 Jay-Z remix. We both listened to that song on repeat while driving cross country, we have a ton of fun memories to it, and it came on the radio the first time we were in a car after we got engaged. We both like the lyrics and the edginess of it - though neither of us listen to a ton of rap. We’re keeping it secret from our friends and family. Can’t wait to see our grandparents faces when it plays.

We are doing something kinda off-beat a cover of a Metallica song by a band called apocalyptica; its a compromise to having no other metal music at the wedding!

We’re doing Billy Joel She’s Got a Way. I’m excited about it. I also really like the Luckiest by Ben Folds though.
