The Real Veil

January 26th, 2010 @ 4:12 pm by Mrs. Chick

I’ve finally decided on a veil! Hooray!

Here are some I tried on with my dress. I knew I wanted my mom to make my veil for me, and after explaining this to Mia Couture (where I got my dress) owner Emily, she kindly suggested that I try on different veils with my dress so that I can send pictures to my mom.

Mr. Chick, do not go any further!!!

The first one she picked out was nearly perfect:

The Real Veil : wedding veil 11 1

The Real Veil : wedding veil 21 2

I love the delicate English lace, but I wanted the back to hit the back of my knees, and the front to reach my fingertips.

I then tried on a pencil edged one:

The Real Veil : wedding veil 3 3

The Real Veil : wedding veil 41 4

I think the thin edge does not really complement the softness of the dress.

The Real Veil : wedding veil 5 5

I love the length of this one! However, it doesn’t have a blusher. Although the edge is a nice thick double layer of sheer material, I still prefer lace.

Next up: a ribbon-edged floor-length veil:

The lengthiness of the veil made me feel like Princess Diana. Meh.

The Real Veil : wedding veil 7 7

The Real Veil : wedding veil 8 8

The last one I tried on (above) was too short, and lacking in lace!

Finally, it’s back to trying on the first one again:

The Real Veil : wedding veil 9 9

The Real Veil : wedding veil 10 10

The Real Veil : wedding veil 111 11

Really, how amazing is that lace!!

I was tempted to buy it despite its length, but when I found out the price ($550!!) I nearly fell on the floor. I mean, for $550 you can buy almost three whole dresses at Anthropologie! I joke. You can buy two dresses at Anthropologie. I joke again!!

Anyway, I decided that I liked the idea of very delicate lace on the edges, but I still loved the shape of this veil:

It really is the perfect shape and length for me!

And ladies, I have decided against the Audrey Hepburn tiara from this post. My dress and veil will already have a lot going on!

So, I went to the fabric store, and with the help of JenPez once again, we picked out tulle, lace, and a pattern, and sent it off to Mama Chick!

I couldn’t find the exact veil pattern I wanted, so I am hoping Mama Chick can combine two patterns together. I bought the Butterick Pattern B4487. I am hoping she can take the length of the back of this one:

The Real Veil : wedding veil 13 13

The Real Veil : wedding veil 14 14

With the shape of this one:

The Real Veil : wedding veil 15 15

The Real Veil : wedding veil 16 16

Does anyone have any brilliant ideas about how to do this in a less make-shifty way?

What were your veil experiences? Did you buy one or did you make one (or have someone make it for you)?

I couldn’t believe how expensive veils were either! I would love to make my own, or have one made for me. I love the look of a wider (1/4-1/2″), satin-trimmed cathedral length veil with my satin dress. I’m hoping that I can use the fabric my seamstress cuts off during alterations to trim a veil. I’m not sure how tricky that would be though. It may be easier to buy matching satin ribbon to trim the veil. Excited to see how yours turns out, best of luck!

My veil looked a lot like your dream veil, but was a mantilla with the same kind of sheer lace. I had it made for me, so it was perfect, but not super cheap - it came in around $400. I figure it will be a nice heirloom for my future daughters because I highly doubt they will want to wear my dress or anything else that will probably look crazy in 20-30 years.

My mom is making my veil! We looked at a lot of different veils and I was kind of meh about all of them. Then we decided a floor length veil would look awesome but it was $$$$$$$$. Soooo, Mommy to the rescue! We’re going with a really simple material with small pearls dotting throughout. SO EXCITED!

$500 for a veil? I swear I’m in the wrong business. Anyone want to start up an over priced veil business?

I took my Mom’s veil and freshen it up. Check out Mrs. Taffy’s veil making posts. It’s probably super similar.

Love the lace trim on the first/last veil you showed! It looks great with your dress. I’m sure your mom can finagle the pattern into just the right shape!

The one you love is so pretty and the lace goes perfectly with your dress. I hope what she makes turns out great! I bought my veil the day I got my dress and yes, it was ridiculously expensive for a piece of tulle and a comb.

The picture of the model with the flowers… that’s what I want. I believe it is simply a mantilla worn as a drop veil. With the use of a hairpin or comb to secure it, it can be lifted and not fall off. I found a bunch of mantillas all over the internet. The best thing to do is to use a measuring tape and hold one end in your hand where you want the front to fall, drape it up over your head and determine the total length of the necessary veil that way… then you can use that dimention to find the perfect mantilla. Plus, it gives you the freedom to make the back/front a little longer/shorter just by pulling it one way or another (assuming a comb does not come pre-attached… although many I’ve seen do not)

“I mean, for $550 you can buy almost three whole dresses at Anthropologie! I joke. You can buy two dresses at Anthropologie. I joke again!!”

What really makes me sad is that this is true. And funny. But mostly true.
