I Want to Go to There

January 27th, 2010 @ 12:38 pm by Mrs. Hamster

As a couple for which the decision of where to have dinner yields multiple discussions and analysis (most common answer: “Now I’m too hungry to walk outside! Let’s order in”), choosing our honeymoon destination was no easy task. Should we go for a lazy beach getaway or an old city tour? How long would the honeymoon be? When should we go? After months of deliberation, we finally came to a decision - we’re going on safari, baby!!

I Want to Go to There : wedding honeymoon Safari11 safari1

We’ll be traveling through Kenya and Tanzania for 10 days, looking for wildlife in general and the “Big 5” in particular (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino). We’ve planned our honeymoon for mid-September to coincide with the annual great wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara. A few highlights of our trip will be:

1. Masai Mara

I Want to Go to There : wedding honeymoon Safari61 safari6

Technically located in the northern part of the Serengeti, the Masai Mara features a great opportunity to view the Big 5, as well as cheetah, Thomson’s gazelle, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe and hyena.

2. The Serengeti

I Want to Go to There : wedding honeymoon Safari31 safari3

The Serengeti, stretching across Kenya and Tanzania, features gazelles, zebra, buffalo, and other larger creatures. The Serengeti is the location of the annual great migration - the largest overland migration in the world of wildebeest and other grazing herbivores.

3. Ngorongoro Conservation Area

I Want to Go to There : wedding honeymoon Safari21 safari2

Featured on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area features approximately 25,000 large animals, including hippo, leopards, elephant, wildebeest, and the largest known concentration of lions.

4. Lake Nakuru

I Want to Go to There : wedding honeymoon Safari41 safari4

Lake Nakuru features a large population of flamingos as well as 460 other species of birds. We also have the chance to see zebra, giraffe, and buffalo here.

The Mister and I are really excited to be taking this once-in-a-lifetime trip together. I’ve purchased a safari guide and am perusing the plethora of information online. Mr. Hammy, a more visual person, prefers to watch Big Cat Diary on Animal Planet with our own resident “big cat”:

Where are you going on your honeymoon? Any tips for an African safari?

THAT’S SO COOL! I am so jealous of your adventure! We’re going to Europe (nothing to sneeze at either) but this is so out of the ordinary! I cannot wait to see pictures!

You’re far more adventurous than I am. My fiance’s parents went on safari last year though and it sounded like they had a great time.

I don’t have the stomach for circle of life stuff though :)

My parents lived in Kenya for three years when I was in college so I went on safari several times. You will have a great tip, I am sure. If you have any questions about Kenya, safari etc PM me!

The place I loved to stay the most was the Kichwa Tembo Lodge. Check it out, it was absolutely fabulous! http://www.kichwatembo.com/

We have friends who did this for part of their honeymoon. They loved it and have some absolutely phenomenal pictures. I don’t think it’s for us (we want to go to Greece and see historical rubble instead), but it sounds fantastic.

Oh and I forgot to say in my last post- We did a breafast on the plains one day and it was great. Your hotel may provide that excursion for you. It was very fun and cool!

I went to Ngorongoro and Serengeti last July.. Ngorongoro is magnificent.

Maybe you already know, but just thought I’d mention this: be prepared to set a very high budget because safari is not cheap. And I mean it will be more expensive than a super luxury trip to Europe. Just something to keep in mind… But yes this will definitely be the trip of your lifetime :) Then go in the summer (their winter), and research when is the migration season, so you will see a large number of animals.

Awesome! I spent 2 months traveling around eastern and southern Africa a few years ago and I promise, you will never forget this experience! My fiance and I are considering going to Namibia for our honeymoon but not for sure yet. As for tips, I’d suggest bringing lots of dollar bills as its the easiest way to pay for things. All of the locals preferred to take money in American Currency rather than their local currency and of course they won’t have change for 5s or 10s….

SO FUN!! We’re big time beach people and are going to the Caribbean for our honeymoon, but I would LOVE to go on Safari sometime in my life. I cannot WAIT to see those recaps (I hope you’ll recap the trip! And even though I’m getting married in May, I’ll stick around and wait for them.)

Africa is absolutly AMAZING! I went in 2006 to spend time with some incredible children at an orphange and then went on a safari.
On our night safari a young lion was walking on the road towards our tour jeep.
We rode with him for about 30 minutes with nothing but the open air jeep between us and the lion.
A moment I will never forget!

Oh my gosh! That’s going to be amazing! I can’t wait til Mr. R and I can go to Africa! We’ll be keeping it more lazy and laid back for the honeymoon though! (I think!)
