Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

I never really thought too much about veils, even after trying on wedding dresses. I narrowed down what I didn’t like pretty quickly as consultants tried to get me to don giant poofy pieces of tulle: I didn’t want a blusher, or any added volume at the top. I’m already tall, I don’t need 3 inches of tulle floating above me making me look like a giant. I also discovered that I really love mantilla style veils, but once I bought an all lace dress, I started having second thoughts about a veil that also had lace on it.

(Goodness this photo makes me happy, source)

Since I didn’t care much about the veil and our wedding isn’t thaaaat formal, I figured the veil should probably not be chapel or cathedral length, either. No matter how much I love photos like the one Miss Scissors posted:

(source)

So, I decided on a simple fingertip length, single tier veil - easy enough, right?! I even tried one on when I picked up my dress, and liked it a lot. However it just wasn’t perfect. I didn’t like that it came to a point in the back, and for some reason I decided I hated the ribbon edge it had and just wanted a pencil/embroidered edge:

(example of very thin pencil edging, source)

Of course, this simple, easy veil I had tried on was $150 - ridiculous!! Later that week, I was talking about this with a (Chinese) friend in lab, and she said that she sees ads on the Chinese version of eBay for inexpensive custom veils all the time! Since she was going to China for a visit later that month, she offered to pick up a veil for me - score! So I sent her a photo of the veil I had tried on, as well as details on color, length, and edging. She came back with not one, but two veils (for $10)! And neither of them made me all that excited. :(

(top and right veils from China, left/bottom is plain tulle from Jo-Ann’s)

What I never thought to mention? The material the veils were made of. Who knew there were so many options! My main goal for a veil was for it to be ethereal-like, floaty and sheer—the veils my friend brought back were much more opaque—one was even shiny (see top material in photo above)! So as with many wedding things, I thought I didn’t/wouldn’t care much about this decision, but it turns out that I do.

So, this weekend I went to Jo-Ann Fabrics and bought 2 yards of Bridal Illusion tulle for $2.50 (yay for 50% off coupons). I also scored the Buttericks B4487 veil pattern for 99 cents! This is the same pattern that Mrs. Beagle used to make her veil, and I loved it. So now I’m going to make my own veil - the only problem is that I don’t think I can do the pencil edging myself. I could go with a raw cut edge, or I could sew a ribbon edging (maybe). Or perhaps I should get over the lace thing and make a mantilla! Too many options, not enough time. Or patience.

Did you make your own veil? Any tips?

This is killing me- where did you get your 50% off coupon for Joanne’s?? I signed up for their mailing list and have looked everywhere and can’t find any!

If you have a sewing machine, you can try the pencil edge! You’d just do a really tight stitch and move really slowly, but it could be done with a little practice :)

I am going to attempt to knit my veil, mantilla style. We shall see if the veil or I win out ;) But seriously, I’ve been browsing stitch dictionaries and found a shawl formula to work from. I only plan to make one maybe elbow length so there’s hope that the veil will be completed.

I will probably be making my veil as well. I certainly don’t want to spend $150 on a veil!!!

Good luck! Can’t wait to see it. This is one of those things I wouldn’t dare attempt to make myself. ;)

No tips from me because I’m crafting challenged, but I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

@lemondrop: Did you give them your email address? I get the coupons in my email - usually they’re 40% off but sometimes it’s 50! Try this link: http://www.joann-mail.com/J1034SSL/coupons_only.html?r=7609_812580&i=J1034SSL019&bc1=421003079204799740500
It’s good until Jan. 30th!
@Mrs. Lamb: Hmm… I may have to try that! I had thought about doing it but was concerned I would rip through the tulle. I guess if I mess up the edge I can always sew a ribbon over it, ha!
@LittleWit: Ooh, good luck!
@Miss Spaniel: I figure worst case scenario, I don’t wear a veil! Not the end of the world :)
@Miss Frozen Yogurt: I’m interested to see what I come up with, too :D Also I looove your mantilla veil Fro Yo!

I bought a prepackaged veil from Walmart for a friends bachelorette party, and you could definitely see how cheap the fabric was. It didn’t really lay right because it was so stiff. If your going to do a veil, do it right!

See, this is why the world needed Isaac Mizrahi for Target bridal. My veil was $14.99.

I believe Tanya’s Aunt made the Mantilla Veil pictured above. It’s actually really easy with the Mantilla style since the lace easily hides the sewing & cutting job. ;-) The most important part is just getting the shape right so that it falls the right way - but there are patterns online for that. Good luck!!

For a pencil edge, you really need a serger. Now, if only you had a friend with just such a device. If you don’t have a friend with such a device, if only you had a neighbor with such a tool. If not a neighbor, what about a devoted weddingbee reader who lives in Fed Hill?

PM me if you’re interested - mine needs to be fixed, but barring that, I think I could do a nice pencil edge.

I’m making my own! We got a $290 price today for the one I want and THAT is just not going to happen if I can make it myself for 20.

I did some research on pricing and ultimately decided it would make more sense for me to purchase it than to spend hours attempting to DIY and eventually having my mom save me. That said, I’m a mess with fabrics so I’m sure if you attempted you would do much better!

I think a cut edge would be beautiful and simple, if you can’t figure out how to do the pencil edge.

Good luck! I never even thought about making my own, I’m crafty but more in the bedazzling sense. If you want any rhinestones attached after you make it, I’m your girl!

@Mrs. Ramen: I’m only going to wear the veil for the ceremony - perhaps that’s why I’m so cavalier about making it myself! No one will notice small mistakes in a veil when I’m far away at the front of the aisle, right?!
@Miss Pudding: That’s why I like the Bridal Illusion tulle I got at JoAnn’s - very flexible so it will (hopefully) lie flat!
@Sarah, mrspaetz: I knew he made wedding dresses for them, but not veils!
@Anne: Luckily tulle itself is relatively inexpensive, so I may just have to try a mantilla in case I love it :D
@edb: Haha - yes!! I knew a serger was what I needed and I was all hopeless like who would I possibly know with a serger?! PM forthcoming :D
@Miss Hamster: I’m slightly concerned the amount of time it will take me to make it will outweigh the cost benefits, but I’ll give it my best shot!
@Miss Nachos: Ha! You certainly are the best bedazzler I know!

Did you try Etsy? There’s lots of veil shops and most are under $50
