Mrs. Pencils's Picture
Mrs. Pencils, Washington DC/Frederick, MD Age and Occupation: 24, Program Director, Education Non Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Administrative Assistant, Ocean Conservation Non Profit Engagement Date: July 26, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: Morningside Inn About Me: I'm a nerdy Northwestern girl who always knew she was meant to live in the East, harboring a deep love of ice cream, underwear, Diet Coke with a splash of Coca-Cola, pashminas, scrapbooking, stationery, wall calendars and books written for preteens. I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! I'm loving the adventure of planning a Maryland wedding and Rocky Mountain reception, and most of all, I just love love!
About Mrs. Pencils

A few months ago, dear Mama Pencils and I were engaging in one of our now-regular phone conversations about “the wedding”. In this particular convo, she was updating me on which of my relatives would be making the trek to Maryland. It turns out that none of my father’s side (all of whom live in Idaho) would be RSVPing “accepts with pleasure”. It also seems that none of my cousins who live in Idaho will be able to make it. My parents’ friends and the family that used-to-live-next-door-and-then-I-babysat-their-children-for-ten-years that all live in Idaho won’t likely be coming, either.

I was beginning to notice a trend… Mr. Pencils took one look at my face, listened to the list of people that wouldn’t be coming and suggested a remedy (he’s solution-oriented, he is).

A second, smaller reception in Idaho in July!

Well, hell yeah! It was the perfect solution, albeit a more costly one for us, but worth the extra shell out. I’d get to celebrate with the people who lived three thousand miles from Maryland, just two months later!

Not to mention getting to choose another white dress (short and sassy anyone?) and getting to actually have that “other” wedding I keep thinking about. It was settled and promptly dropped from our radar.

And then it was less than five months away and I remembered that we had to actually plan this little Idaho shindig. We have to pick a date, a venue, get some food, get the clothes, buy the plane tickets, send out notification to our Idaho guests… crap, there was a lot to do. I am still in the process of nailing down the vision for this second reception, but I’ve turned up some location and food options.

I put bridesmaid CH on top of it and she found a few places for our laid-back second wedding celebration:

FMC Park is a local park that has a gazebo area that we can rent. It’s gorgeous and easy to get to. I don’t remember ever going there, but CH tells me it’s a popular place for small receptions.

Ross Park is another local park that has a gazebo/picnic area that allows alcohol on premise. It’s shaded, green, and beautiful. I used to run cross country meets here a lot in high school.

CH turned up the Rosewood Reception Hall as well. It’s beautiful and indoors, in case of inclement weather. It also happens to be where Brother Pencils and his fiance will marry in June of 2011!

I did some research too and got really excited at the prospect of renting (for $100!) a little piece of history:

Fort Hall is known for being a stop on the Oregon Trail—both the real trail and the most amazing computer game ever to exist. I am nerdily excited at the prospect of hosting 50 of my family and friends at a cool, yet obscure, historic trading post!

Mr. Pencils and I both agreed on food that we can’t have at our “formal” Maryland reception—barbecue, baby! I’m thinking sweet giant tinfoil tins of ribs, pulled pork, cornbread, beans, and coleslaw. We really want food that is good and will satiate our older guests and keep the babies busy—because, if all attended, there will be twenty kids under 13 at this Idaho celebration. We want lots of food and lots of running space to keep them occupied!

I’m still marinating on this small reception, and I need to find some way to let our family and friends in Idaho know about this party later in the summer…

Did you become a two-reception bride unintentionally? How are you letting people know about this second celebration?

I have heard rumors that we will have a second reception in Washington State! However I haven’t planned anything as of yet…if we do it will just be at FIL’s farm, so nothing too fancy.

As soon as I read the words Fort Hall… I thought “Hey! Like the place in the Oregon Trail game!” I would totally jump at the chance to have a reception there. I might even want “Oregon Trail” themed invites… Dysentery anyone? :o) Haha. Seriously… you could have the reception in a Grey Hound Bus depot, if there’s BBQ… it’ll be a good time!

It’s great that you get to have a second reception! We’re doing one as well because no one on my side of the family will be able to come out to California. We’ve told people about it mostly through word of mouth, but we’ll probably send out invites once the details are nailed down.

We’re doing two too!
Our wedding is in CT in my hometown and two WEEKS later we’re having another Mass as a Blessing followed by another reception - sit down dinner, dancing, the whole shebang. I’ve been searching for a bridesmaid dress I can get in an ivory/champagne-ish color to wear for it all night tonight so good timing! I haven’t really done anything for the 2nd ‘wedding’ yet - luckily it’s on the military base where FI is based and we can work with the catering manager who will handle just about everything! I hope…
I am going to order a 2nd set of invitations and if I have my way I’ll insert them into the main invitations for those whose invitations overlap and send them separately for those who don’t. Hope it all works out! And send some BBQ to Ireland for me - it’s not a strong point of Irish cuisine as I’m sure you can imagine… ;o)

Love this idea! Mr. S and I both grew up w/in 40 miles of each other, so this was a non-issue for us, but I always love when people are able to have second receptions so that everyone who is important can be there!

Love that you’re considering having a second reception at Fort Hall - LOVE the OREGON TRAIL! Don’t let anyone get hurt from a wagon wheel, make sure you buy enough Ox to forge the river, and if you must, let little jimmy die from dysentary…hey times were tough.

I am doing the exact same thing. I am from TN but now live in CA and we are having the wedding in CA (couldnt resist a wedding by the beach!). But like you, many friends and family dont have the money/time to travel to CA so we are having a reception in TN 2 weeks later (it will be a pit stop on the way home from the homeymoon). I am doing some “reception only” invites, and for some will just put an insert in the wedding invitation. I didnt want traveling to my wedding to be a burden on anyone, so this way people can still be involved in the wedding without crazy flight/hotel costs. I am thinking of just wearing my wedding dress…is that weird? it’s a casual tea length dress…

We had to put the wedding in Vermont to accommodate all the family that lives up there. Sadly, that means we get no friends from Virginia who don’t have money to travel.

I decided instead of another reception down here, to have a summer time co-ed DC Club night “bachelorette” party with all of my old friends. We used to go clubbing a lot in college, and even though Nation got torn down for the Nationals Baseball team (yuck!) we’ll be able to relive a lot of memories and just drink and have fun. Low cover charge, no presents, just hanging out like “old times”.

We’re doing 2 as well and with the wedding in April being so small, the home party is actually a lot more work to plan for us. But it’s where I get to be more creative with centerpieces and such. We’re sending out the invites before the actual wedding so we get the RSVPs back in time.
