Adventures in Yudu

“Round One! Ready…. FIGHT!”

Let’s examine the process of YUDU screen-printing, shall we?

Adventures in Yudu : wedding crafts diy favors Z Stenc First we printed out our stencil. This took, oh, about THREE tries, due to our printer’s refusal to cooperate. We decided to go for the heart instead of the Star Wars symbol, which we had debated about before. I’m a little sad about it, but Mr. Sewing thinks it’s best to confuse as few people as possible.

(Note: Not pictured are the steps we took to burn the stencil into the emulsion. Just follow the directions, and make sure everything is 100% dry!)

We set the finished screen in the Yudu and taped down the parts we don’t want to ink just yet.

Next, we flooded the screen with ink.

Then Mr. Sewing scraped the design onto the fabric. We did a total of 6 passes with a Ralph’s grocery card.

Lift the screen up, and here’s the design! Not so bad, actually.

… But after it dried, the ink disappeared! Ack! Maybe we should use a different color?

Adventures in Yudu : wedding crafts diy favors Z Yudu5

We tried the main design with the an opaque white ink instead. Much better!

… But it was still not perfect. I think I used too many scrapes on these, as you can tell by the bleeding. We’ll get there yet!

How much trial-and-error did you have to go through before achieving perfect results? Or did you end up changing your definition of perfect, instead?

For the red, if you want it to show up better, you could just tray getting a more opaque ink, rather than changing colors. Speedball makes a great line of opaque screen printing inks that show up well on dark fabrics. The white looks great though, good luck!

I saw a lady at Jo-Ann’s using the Yudu, and I didn’t realize just how big that thing is. I was totally overwhelmed, but this definitely seems like a project you can handle.

The white ink looks great — good choice! I’m sure with a bit more practice you’ll get it perfect.

Even with the ink bleeding, it looks great. A few more trials and I’m sure you guys will have it down!

@bluebutterfly: Do it! And let me know how it turns out for you!
@chexmixDC: I tried to find red opaque ink, actually. they only had a raspberry color though, so I just went with white. The opaque inks do look really good though!
@Miss Stripes: haha, no I was too cheap for the mini squegee. >.>” Plus, there’s no ralphs up here in the north (i think?), so I’m considering it recycling. lol

I’ve been debating on whether or not to get a yudu. I don’t really have anything in mind for it, I just like the idea of more craft projects.

Once you figure out the bledding, it’ll look great. I liek the design and colors.
