Blush and Bashful

January 28th, 2010 @ 5:37 pm by Mrs. Hamster

I’ve got a confession to make.

I kinda stumbled into our “colors”.

Okay, so I understand colors in general, but “wedding colors”, with the finger quotes? Not a clue. In almost every step of the planning process, people have asked for our colors. The bridesmaid dress shops inquired, but I was really looking for whatever color looked best on my ladies. My florist wondered, and I blurted out “white” because I didn’t know what else to say (and white goes with everything, kinda, right?). I’ve got my bridesmaids’ dresses all settled, so I’m guessing one of our colors is midnight blue. But then what?

Here’s what I’ve got so far:

1. Bridesmaids Dresses - Midnight/Cobalt

2. Our Invitations - Cream and Gold (if I ever get them done, tear!)

3. Flowers - White (out of fear)

And… that’s it. If I go out on a limb, I might see if yellow flowers would work. Or not (don’t you love my decisiveness?).  Then what? I’m thinking the programs would be some variation of navy on cream, with gold accents. Or gold on cream, with navy covers. The menus would be cream, with navy. And we’ll throw a boat design on there for good measure. Or am I getting this all wrong? Hey, who took my periwinkle crayon? I knew I graduated to the big box of Crayolas way too soon…

Did you know what your colors were from the outset, or did you fall into them?

Hee. Love the Steel Magnolias reference. We’re color twins. (Er, if such a thing exists?)

I fell into my “colors” too! After changing my mind a dozen and 1/2 times… HE was actually the one who suggested what we decided on… same colors as you and with splashes of the Orange family. Our bridesmaid dresses are the same as yours and the flowers will be ambers, saffron, and reds. I love the cream and gold invitations. It will be beautiful!

Haha. I know what you mean about stumbling on your colors and not really knowing how to answer when people ask! I think cobalt, cream, and that lovely gold/yellow shade are so pretty together! What about pale pale pink or pale green to mix in via the flowers?

You could definitely add some blush pinks to the mix - that would be so lovely.

Or, consider some soft greens, or even pale purples.

You could even go bold and add orange.

My mom insisted that I picked my colors right away. So I picked yellow and silver, pretty arbitrarily. But I’m still not entirely sure what the colors are *for*. Am I not allowed to use green if I want? Or, heaven forbid, blue? Does EVERYTHING have to have yellow and silver on it? The whole thing confuses me.

I don’t believe you have to have a set color scheme as long as everything blends well together. Not matchy matchy, but you don’t want your devor looking extremely odd. Unless your going for a Alice in wonderland theme! My colors weren’t so clear to me either. The only thing I knew is that I wanted chocolate brown table cloths. So I’ve been trying to find decor that matches with Chocolate brown and then I figured I’d pick out any other colors depend on what type of decor I found and what color it was. Now I’m in the chocolate brown, ivory, blue and green colors.. Where does the blue and green come in you might ask? I’m planning on adding peacock feathers in my cake and decor!

I’ve known my colors longer than I’ve known FI. :) But I think the ones you stumbled into are great. You could even get away with some deep reddish-pink accents or some silver. I love the midnight blue with cream and gold, just be sure to play it up with your decor and flowers so that people can really see all the colors, I think it will be a great effect.

Seriously, with those colors, you could do your flowers ANY color you want. Those are all pretty neutral.

We don’t really have colors. No bridesmaid dresses, no flowers except whatever they give me for a bouquet. I think it would be tough to pick colors and stick with the theme. I’d be all over the place!

I think the dark blue, gold and white is really pretty!!! Add blue flowers to the mix or stick with all white or even blush or peach would mix in nicely. I say all white for an evening, dressier wedding and colors for a more casual or daytime wedding.

I think those colors are great! My colors were pretty set from the outset (black for bridesmaids dresses, ruby and mango flowers), but I’ve fallen into a bit of a “theme.” We have a blind-embossed blossom on our invitation, cherry blossoms on the wedding cake, cherry blossoms on the place cards, cherry blossoms on the OOT bags… All purchased separately, not always by me. Voila! A theme.

You fell into a nice color combo! I made ours up before we found our venue…and thus, it doesn’t match our venue. Eh. : )

I knew from the beginning that I didn’t want red, pink, purple or anything to that effect. And I love the way that blue and green look together. So we’re doing light blue and sea foam green dresses. Three girls will wear green, two will wear blue, and the flower girl has a cute blue flowered dress in the same shade. I always knew my flowers would be yellow roses because they’re my favorite. So there you have it, pastel blue, green and yellow. Not what most expect from a fall wedding but it’s my fall wedding and I’ll plan it like I want to:)

i think your colors are very elegant. i kinda gravitate towards lavender and sage (plus they’re both edible), and figured that gold and cream never hurt. but then randomly for the cocktail hour i’m having hot pink and orange. whatev.
