What I Should Have Tried First

January 28th, 2010 @ 9:48 am by Mrs. Pencils

I believe in going big or going home, so my first project for our wedding was one that will be pretty visible for our guests: our cake topper. I should have started small, but I’ve never been one to follow logic. I did do something rather small after our wood painting adventure: I bought and snazzied-up (it’s a word) the glass containers for our sand ceremony.

I got the glass at Michaels (naturally) for a total of about 15 or so bucks. I chose these particular ones for three reasons:

  1. The smaller ones are made out of recycled glass—score!
  2. When placed next to the middle, larger vase, they seem to “fit” together, indenting in all the right places.
  3. It’s what they had.

Using my brand new, first ever glue gun (see also: mini, lime green glue gun):

I gathered my shiny green and brown ribbon and most-amazing-invention-ever glue dots:

and created this:

I bought some fun rhinestones I had planned on using to snazzy-it-up even more, but Mr. Pencils said KISS—keep it simple, stupid. I’m not sure if I agree though. What do you think? I want to add the rhinestones on the brown ribbon, like this:

Should I leave it as is, or make it more fun? And what’s a witty retort for your fiance when he sarcastically, somewhat intentionally, calls you stupid?

Think the rhinestones will look great! It’s a bit plain right now.

I would say that if you want rhinestones and he doesn’t, put some on yours and leave his pretty plain. It will work with your preferences! Also, with the stupid comment, I would tell him that people are attracted to those who are similar… what does that say about him? :-P

I vote no rhinestones, but I always go towards simple and classic.

Rhinestones all the way! The center vases is so snazzy, that I think the plain brown ribbon kind of pales in comparison. Add the rhinestones!

Um, I vote for more snazziness. It looks great now, but c’mon, a little more bling never hurt anyone.

(I’d line the edges with it, so not ALL the bling, but subtle bling!)

STONE IT!! However, I’ve been known to go overboard a time or 20 on projects.
But, stones would be super-fun.

Hmmm, I think it would look good either way. I’m a fan of keeping it simple, but if you already have the rhinestones, why not dress it up a bit? ;)

1. Call him a jackass with a smile on your face.

2. Smack him on the ass.

3. Bedazzle the poop out of the ribbon.

I would actually take some of the ribbons off of the central vessel, so you’ll be able to see the layers of sand as they are being poured, and your guests can see it more easily. I don’t think adding sparkles is a bad thing, but I would like to be able to see inside of the central vase more… it’s not like a unity candle where just the top is used and the rest can be covered, IMHO.

Find something to make fun of him for and call him stupid. My fiance and I call each other stupid all the time (jokingly, of course), and as silly as it sounds, it can actually be a lot of fun.

I think you could go either way. I lean towards simple, but the rhinestones would probably look pretty snazzy, too. :)

Rhinestones! Since he doesn’t think you should use any, keep it simple with them. Maybe not as many as you wanted? I got no good comebacks! I usually just stick my tongue out! ha!!!

How about you do one ribbon, with rhinestones? I agree that it would be nice to see the sand more as it goes in. Love the green and brown combo (those were my wedding colors)!
