About Mrs. Pencils

Flail!

January 29th, 2010 @ 8:13 am by Mrs. Pencils

A few weekends back, I tried to nail down two main elements of the travel theme: the luggage tag place cards and the globe cookies. One was a pretty big score… and the other an epic fail.

The major score was the creation of our luggage tag place cards. We chose the pictures to use as the image on one side and this was pretty uneventful. We’re planning on using our personal photos from different locations we’ve been, like the two examples below:

The harder part came in figuring out WHAT to write people’s names and table assignments on. After initially trying plain ivory and green paper, I lucked out and came across some little jewels at Michaels. In the scrapbooking section, I found four packs of Colorbok’s Sticky Journal Stax-Travel. These little babies have 36 acid free travel themed sheets, 24 of which are business card sized and 12 that I can cut and stylize to fit. They’re immensely more fun than the simple green sheets of paper I had intended on using. My favorites are styled like postcards and say “air mail” and “wish you were here.”

I know everyone says it, but these really are really bad quality photos. Please accept my apologies for my lacking skills!

Mama Pencils thinks we should list people’s ACTUAL address like on this place card:

But I think it would be best to just do their names like this:

Which do you think guests would prefer?

And now for the epic fail. We want to give out homemade sugar cookies decorated like globes as favors, using an old family recipe. All’s well with the cookie making part—it’s the decorating part where I fall ridiculously short. I need to make friends with an artist stat, or find some sort of stencil, cuz my natural “skills” ain’t gonna cut it:

These are the two best products from the batch. Fail… and now, I *flail*.

Does anybody know where I can find a globe stencil, or have a brilliant idea on how to make these cookies look like our actual Earth?

Use the guest’s full name and address. That’s what luggage tags are for anyway!

I would just put the guest’s first and last name and let them add their address. Somepeople like to use a business address on luggage tags (especially when traveling for work). Others may be planning a move. Besides, it’S muyh less work for you to just write first and last name and it looks neater. How are you planning to include the table number? Could you just do cute numbers on the cookies instead of the globe?

You could do a combination and do their names and the towns they live in, not the street address. It’s personalized and makes it look like they are their own destination.

I’d just do the guests first and last name on the tags. It looks a little cleaner.

I’m doing a travel theme as well! Our tables are going to be different countries that we have been to. My mom is actually painting a scene from each country for the table “numbers.” At the cocktail hour guests will pick up a plane ticket with their name and their destination country. Then when they get to the table they will have luggage tags waiting for them. I’m getting my luggage tags off etsy, made in our colors. I haven’t decided what I’m putting inside the tags yet, but I think I might just put some quotes. But I love those little cards you found!

As far as the cookies, what if you made little “globe” cake balls instead?

I feel your pain with cookie decorating, I’m awful also! Could you do sugar cookies, frost them in white and then use food dye markers? These seem to look easier to use than colored icing: http://foodoodler.com/markers.htm

I like the name with the address, but maybe use the venue address or table number instead? So like:
Jen Green
Table 14
Grantham Hotel
Smalltown, USA

For the cookies, are you set on having globes? What if you do rectangles and make them into luggage instead? The food dye markers are a great idea too!

or maybe use marshmellow fondant (AKA pretty good homemade fondant), and use cookie cutters to cut out a blue layer, and the green “land” layer… you’d have to find a cookie cutter for the alnd which might be tough (but not too difficult, methinks) and like fondant, but hey… maybe :)

did you try using a thicker consistency of royal icing to outline the design with a small piping tip….you would let it dry and then use a flooding consistency of royal icing….it’s really about playing with the consistency or you won’t get pleasant results

I also hear that there are things like printable ink/paper that you could print the design on then just paste it to the frosted cookie

I think cookie markers or paints could work.
Maybe something like this:

What about that transfer paper? I’m not sure about how it works, but it’d be something to look into!

What if you use a blue icing to cover the globe and then add the green?

You could frost the cookies with blue, then make a “globe” stencil to put over the cookies and sprinkle on green sugar sprinkles to fill in the continents. That would be fairly easy and not as time consuming as making each individual cookie with iced continents. The luggage tags are SUPER cute! Nice job!

I think just putting the names on the tags is the way to go. As for the cookies, i think they are so cute!!

@fromcharleston: you don’t think it looks too busy? you may be right though….
@slicey19: the table “number” is actually going to be a location- like the way you see “paris” and “beijing”‘ on there- and the photo of the location will also match the photo at the table
@Ms. Library: that’s a good idea!!
@Cole B: that’s how I feel! I don’t want it to be too cluttery :(
@avhill: that will be great!
@LaborOfLove: that sounds fun- but hard! i might have to look into it…
@proBM2008: you may have just saved my life!
@bakerella: that luggage idea is FANTASTIC. thank you!
@Jukika: i’ve thought of this! I can’t find a cookie cutter with earth forms though- not even a stencil! :(
@bluebutterfly: both of these are brilliant ideas! thank you!
@Little Lulu: haha that’s my inspiration cookie! it’s my ideal :)
@Miss Pug:can I invite you then? You can wander around and get people giggling instead of cocking their heads and whispering “what is this supposed to be?!”
@lmariea: ooh! great tip- thank you!

@Newport Nuptials: this was my original idea! mama P and Mr. P shot it down! I still think it’ll work though too…thank you!
@Rosiebear: thank you! now I just need to find the globe stencil- I’ve been searching everywhere!
@Miss Frozen Yogurt: thank you :) I worry they aren’t “cute” enough :(
