Hammering Out the Ring Situation

January 29th, 2010 @ 2:10 pm by Mrs. Pencils

You’ve seen my engagement ring. What good is an engagement ring post without an accompanying wedding band story?

As I grew up I saw bands like these on Mama and Papa Pencils’ hands and to me, it is quintessential wedding ring-ness. So, initially, I assumed we’d end up with rings like these:

Then Mr. Pencils went and blinged out my engagement ring and I found myself being drawn to beautiful pave rings that match my e-ring, like these:

My halo set pave ring is not raised, meaning it has no space to allow a normal band to fit correctly. While we did find one pave ring that was thin enough to look ok, ideally I imagined a ring that would sit flush against my current ring:

What bothered me about this option was that I wouldn’t be able to just wear my wedding ring by itself, because of the odd shape. I also would have to have it custom made, as my radiant cut ring didn’t seem to fit any of the standard settings. Custom made usually = massive amounts of money. Sad face.

To alleviate the worry of this oddly shaped band, I considered buying a “stand in” sterling silver wedding band for fifty bucks. I could wear just this ring on the days I don’t feel like going all out with e-ring and matching band. A “stand in” would be simple, durable, and it’s not the end of the world if it gets lost or scratched.

With no real progress being made (simply more options for an indecisive bride is not conducive to making a choice) Mr. Pencils and I gave up on the search for my ring for a while and took some time to find what he wanted. He was really drawn to rings like these:

In the end, we both decided we want an overall simply-designed rings with some sort of twist. We both wanted them to be comfortable, unique, and meaningful. At first, the meaningful seemed to come with the idea of engraving something. I imagined something like this on our rings:

  • I choose you (simple, sweet, to the point)
  • You’re my favorite (something I say to Mr. Pencils daily)
  • Something good (to reference the song we finally chose for our first dance)
  • You’re the reason (a reference to one of my favorite quotes by Nietzsche)

Then Mr. Pencils took an afternoon to search for better options and found the solution. The Wedding Ring Workshop. There are many across the globe, in the US and the UK, and they are artists’ studios where professional jewelry makers help couples lacking melting and welding skills (i.e. the Pencils) form, hammer, and forge wedding bands for one another. It’s not cheap, but also not as expensive as some of the wedding bands we were finding. They use recycled metal (gold, silver, platinum—couples’ choice) and we get to take the rings home the same day we make them!

The biggest caveat with this decision is that now I will become a switch hand bride, meaning I’ll have to move my engagement ring to my right hand so that I can wear my wedding band on my left. I’m happy with this choice because I’ll be able to just wear my wedding band on days I don’t feel like blingin’ out.

Mr. Pencils and I will be making our own wedding bands in February and I’m saying a silent prayer that these artists can help even a talent-starved bride-to-be like me create something worth wearing. We’ve sent them the images of the ones Mr. P likes and they say it’s completely doable. Now I have to decide what I want my ring to look like… suggestions?

How many wedding bands did you look at before choosing one? Anyone else going to be switching their engagement ring to their right hand after marriage?

Wow what a unique idea! Can’t wait to see how they turn out.

I’d have to get my e-ring resized if I ever wanted to switch hands since my right is a bit bigger, but luckily my e-ring is designed to sit flush to a wedding band so I’ll be wearing the set.

we have all the exact same problems! I was also thinking of getting a “stand in” ring.. maybe something kind of “etsy”ish. I also considered switching my e-ring to my right but I have not quite decided! will have to look into this whole make your own idea! love that.

I only looked at two since I new exactly what I was looking for. I am sans e ring today because it is at the jewelers where they are making a mold to create a band with a nitch so that the two rings will fit flush.
Though, I definitely considered going the same route as you flipping the diamond to my right hand- but the mold is an affordable option.

that’s a cool idea! I have a halo style ring as well, but the designer has a matching band that will sit flush against the side of the ring, so I don’t have to worry about it.

What an awesome idea - thank you so much for sharing the Wedding Workshop with the hive! I think it would be a great memory to have and since we both like working with our hands (he likes to build stuff - I like to craft), it would be fun for both of us.

My band is very similar to the third picture except mine is plain. I order two out a book at a jeweler in town and when they arrived one fit perfectly around my ring. (The other curve was way off) I only had to buy the one I liked. (I’m pretty sure it was like $120. Which is more than the $6 we paid for hubby’s band on our honeymoon!)

I wear it by itself all the time. It’s really not *that* noticeable.

I think maybe for an anniversary I’ll ask for the pave version for nights I want to go all out. When I was initially trying them on though I thought the extra diamonds drew attention away for the awesomeness of the engagement ring.

That sounds like a fun thing to do together and the rings will have even more meaning.

IF things don’t go as planned with this workshop I wanted to suggest looking into getting a custom ring made from Diamond Nexus Labs. The create ‘green diamonds’ and designed the Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA crowns and the price doesn’t even compare to what you would pay for a geniune diamond. MY FI bought my engagment ring there and I can’t tell you how many compliments I get on my ring still to this day. A ‘green diamond’ is a lab created diamond that is made from the same material as mined diamonds along with a few extra elements. THIS IS NOT A CZ RING! They can custom make anything you want or even re-create a ring. http://www.diamondnexuslabs.com

Can’t wait to hear about your workshop!

My husband says “you’re my favorite” to me all the time. It made me laugh to see that you say it too! Love the idea of making your own rings!

I love the idea of making our own wedding bands, but sadly that company doesn’t have any locations near Colorad :( And Miss Spaghetti—that website is insane! Too cool!

I wear my engagement ring on my right hand and love it that way. I like both rings on their own better than I like them together. Plus, it reminds my how much fun it was to be engaged, seeing just that ring on one of my fingers. :)

Ooo, and Miss Spaghetti, my diamond (which is blue) is also man-made and the rest of my ring is recycled platinum. My husband bought it here: http://www.greenkarat.com/
