The Table Label

January 29th, 2010 @ 5:06 pm by Miss Pudding

Since our STDs are finished, and the designing process for our invites has stalled due to my inability to use any design programs more complicated than Microsoft Publisher (I’m trying to teach myself how to use Gimp and Inkscape… any other free, user friendly design software out there?), I’ve decided to move on to a new project - our table numbers.

When I first started the planning process, I imagined wooden numbers on our tables, a la Miss Cola:

(source)

I am planning for our centerpieces to be taller versions of the ones above, and the wooden numbers seemed to fit! Alas, this plan was not meant to be.

I am one of those people that goes to craft stores without any real purpose in mind.

I just kind of pace the aisles, hoping that something will jump out and inspire me. And on a recent trip to Michaels, that’s exactly what happened!

These gold and bronze frames were in the dollar bin. In my “normal” state of mind, I would have passed by these without a second glance. In my “wedding” state of mind, however, I saw potential. They came in many different shapes, and I quickly picked out thirty of the oval and rectangle ones. Once I had these babies home, I proceeded to take them apart.

IMG_00106

I plan on spray painting them white, and putting our numbers inside. I even made a prototype, but was hoping that the hive could help me with the colour selection (yes, I need your input again - I am very indecisive - are you sick of me yet?).

number+

Please keep in mind that these will be standing on either navy tablecloths, or navy squares/runners on top of white tablecloths. I made “number 1″ first, but the number is a little hard to see in real life. I made “number 3″ because Mr. Pudding commented that my obsession with stripes was starting to be a bit concerning. :P

Which do you like best?

I really like #2! What a great find at the craft store….I do that too, just wander the aisles until I find something awesome!

I actually like how they don’t match- what about doing all three designs?

I love number two and how the navy number pops against the paper!

I also tend to go to Michaels and wonder aimlessly until something pops out at me. I wish my trips would turn out like yours!

Oh and I am also self teaching Inkscape, it was pretty daunting for me at first…but I am finally getting a hanf of all this vector nonsense!

I love how you distinguish between a “normal” state of mind vs. a “wedding” state of mind! And I sit back reading this going, “oh yeah, I think that way too now!” LOL It’s a toss up for me between 2 and 3. If you stick with a white table cloth and navy runner/square I think #3 might be too plain for that. :)

The simplicity of three is great–and I think definitely do the numbers in navy, background in yellow for maximum visibility!

I really like #2 also. If you’re tired of the stripes, you can actually keep the backing of what the frames came with (the blue damask background) and just add the yellow numbers to it…that would work too

love #2 - easiest to read, nice stripe detail and i think it will stand out the most against navy tablecloths. justified, there you go.

Also, Michaels is awesome for the random wanderings. unfortunately my wallet doesn’t support those these days.

@Miss Root: Well, don’t forget that there will be two different types of frames as well….you don’t think that it would be too busy?

@Miss Britt: Thanks for the encouragement! Any tips?

@MsJadey: I actually love the stripes in a big, BIG way….it’s Mr. P who’s on the fence :P”

@MsJadey: Unfortunately, the original backing is black…I’m not sure why it turned out so blue in the pic!

If I were you, I’d set them up and then walk as far away from them as your guests will be from their tables. I’m concerned that 2 will not be easy enough to see, so I voted for 3. But if they’re both equally visible, I would do a mish mash of them both.

i like # 3 then #2. the stripes almost make it hard to see the number but maybe it’s just me.

and don’t worry, i’m another michael’s wanderer!

I saw those at michaels too an had to have a big fight with myself about how i have no need for them (as well as the black leather letters they had in the bin next door). I DID get some metallic gold luggage tags for the BMs though!
They look great for your wedding though!! Love the middle one.

My vote is for #2…but I agree, a combo-platter of all 3 mixed through your tables would be really nice as well…even with the different frame shapes (after all, they still are all white frames).

I like number 2 the best but am also a proponent of mixin’ and matchin’!

Also a big proponent of your blog… am obsessively reading every entry! Love your ideas!

I really like Number 2, but if you don’t do that, go for 3 since the Navy number stands out against the yellow background.

I like the interest of the stripes a lot and Number 2 is much easier to read than the first one.

#2 is my favorite, it’s a good compromise between the stripe debate and I think they’d look great on a navy tablecloth.

i love those frames! I like all of them, but 2 is probably the best blend of “easy to read” and “stripey” hehe, mix and match!

@redherring: Good idea! I’ll try that out!

@BeachFanatic: I saw those tags, and had that same moral dilemma - to buy or not to buy :P

@BirdtoBe: Thanks! That’s so nice to hear! :)

I literally just bought the oval red frame just like yours here, from Michael’s. In the dollar bin. Like 2.5 hours ago! Great minds think alike! They are awesome! I’m contemplating going back and buying more! Love this idea, and I voted for #2!

I would go with 2, because the blue on yellow is easy to read and the yellow background will look great on the navy tables.

@Miss Pudding: To be completely honest, I have no idea yet! But it was so cute, I couldn’t steer myself away from it! I thought about using them to house labels for things. I’m pretty sure I could make drink labels or food labels fit into it.

I have to agree with Miss Root. I love the idea of the 3 of them together. There is something very charming about things not matching exactly. Because you have such a strong theme everyone will be able to connect the dots. In fact, I am having a nautical theme and have thought of something very similar for my table numbers. Don’t worry about being indecisive, just think of yourself as extremely creative… Great project!

#3! I like solids more than patterns in general. And you are not alone–I totally go into craft stores with no purpose, too. : )

I’m so glad to see someone using those little frames! I saw them a few weeks ago and thought they would be wonderful for quick table numbers after a little coat of spray paint!

If you want to use them afterwards, I’m actually thinking of using them to label baskets in one of those cube shelves. Just hot glue some wire on the back and tie them through the basket weave. ;)

Don’t know how many tables you’re having, but why not use all three designs, mixing it up between the different tables?

These are great!

As for free design programs - I designed my invitations using the free trial of Illustrator. Since it’s only a month, I downloaded it onto my brother’s computer and used it to play around, get used to the program, and come up with some ideas. Once I had the basics, I downloaded the trial on my own computer and finished it there. Not sure that the Illustrator people would appreciate that method, but it worked for me!

.
i love number 1!

question for your assembly. i noticed you took took the backs completely off. did you take the plastic fake glass part off as well? will you put that back on? last question….are you using a number template? please email me if you can nicolemarie78@gmail.com

@nicole marie: I did take the plastic fake glass off, because it was easier to spray paint the frame without it. I may glue it back on, but I don’t think that it’s really necessary. I’m using my cricut to cut the numbers, but you could probably find pre-made numbers in the scrapbooking section at Michael’s. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!
